SOME ASPECTS OF THE BIOLOGY OF Macrobrachium dux (LENZ, 1910) (CRUSTACEA:DECAPODA:NATANTIA) IN RIVER OROGODO, NIGER DELTA, NIGERIA Acta biol.Colomb.
ARIMORO,FRANCIS O; MEYE,JACOB A.
Preliminary investigation into some aspects of the biology of the palaemonid prawn, Macrobrachium dux (Lenz, 1910) in River Orogodo at Abavo, southern Nigeria was carried out between March and August 1995. The freshwater prawns were collected with properly baited cage traps and scooping with hand basket. The study revealed that the prawn species were widespread and abundant in the river. Abundance in terms of number and biomass was more during the wet season with a peak in August. Both adults and juveniles showed a progressive increase from late dry season to midrainy season (August). The malefemale ratio was 1:1.2. The fluctuation in the number and percentage of ovigerous females indicated that the prawn spawned during the midrainy season (JuneAugust)....

Influence of environmental quality of the tributaries of the Monjolinho River on the relative condition factor (Kn) of the local ichthyofauna Biota Neotropica
Barrilli,Germano Henrique Costa; Rocha,Odete; Negreiros,Natalia Felix; Verani,José Roberto.
The relative condition factors (Kn) of the fishes Astyanax paranae, Phalloceros harpagos and Poecilia reticulata were used as a means of assessing the influence of environmental conditions on the well-being of sub - populations of these species, with the eventual aim of using them as bioindicators of disturbance in tributary streams of the Monjolinho River, in São Carlos - SP. The power-law curve generated by the length-weight relationship indicated a positive allometric growth for the three species studied. Overall, the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) positively correlated average Kn of A. paranae with well oxygenated and oligotrophic environments, typical of conserved areas or near the natural state. For the average value of Kn obtained for...

Influence of feeding plasticity on the fitness of small Neotropical characids Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Fiori,Leandro Fabrício; Alves,Gustavo Henrique Zaia; Hahn,Norma Segatti; Benedito,Evanilde.
Abstract This study investigated the diet of four characids [Hyphessobrycon eques (Steindachner, 1882), Odontostilbe pequira (Steindachner, 1882), Psellogrammus kennedyi (Eigenmann, 1903) and Serrapinnus calliurus (Boulenger, 1900) ] coexisting in two lagoons and checked for possible spatial differences and the influence on population fitness. The main goal was check if these species show better fitness according to the nutritional value of the food resource consumed. In this way, it is expected that the species show improved nutritional conditions (evidenced by the relative condition factor) when foraging for items of animal origin, and the reverse is expected when consuming items of plant origin and detritus. Sampling was conducted in August 2011. The...

Mahe, Kelig; Bellamy, Elise; Delpech, Jean-paul; Lazard, Coline; Salaun, Michele; Verin, Yves; Coppin, Franck; Travers-trolet, Morgane.
Weight–Body Length relationships (WLR) of 45 fish species (37 Actinopterygii and eight Elasmobranchii) were investigated. A total of 31,167 individuals were caught and their biological parameters measured during the four quarters from 2013 to 2015, on five scientific surveys sampling the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean from the North Sea to the Bay of Biscay (ICES Divisions IVb, IVc, VIId, VIIe, VIIg, VIIh, VIIj, VIIIa and VIIIb). Among 45 tested species, all showed a significant correlation between total length (L) and total weight (W). The influence of sex on WLR was estimated for 39 species and presented a significant sexual dimorphism for 18 species. Condition factor (K) of females was always higher than for males. Moreover, a spatial effect on the WLR...

Growth performances of juvenile sole Solea solea under environmental constraints of embayed nursery areas ArchiMer
Laffargue, Pascal; Lagardere, Francoise; Rijnsdorp, Adriaan D.; Fillon, Alain; Amara, Rachid.

Modeling fish growth and reproduction in the context of the Dynamic Energy Budget theory to predict environmental impact on anchovy spawning duration ArchiMer
Pecquerie, Laure; Petitgas, Pierre; Kooijman, Sebastiaan.
Spawning location and timing are critical for understanding fish larval survival. The impact of a changing environment on spawning patterns is, however, poorly understood. A novel approach is to consider the impact of the environment on individual life histories and subsequent spawnings. In the present work, we extend the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory to investigate how environment variability impacts the spawning timing and duration of a multiple-batch spawning species. The model is successfully applied to reproduce the growth and reproduction of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Bay of Biscay. The model captures realistically the start and ending of the spawning season, including the timing of the spawning events, and the change in egg number...

Etude comparative de différents indices de condition chez l'huître creuse (Crassostrea gigas) ArchiMer
Bodoy, Alain; Prou, Jean; Berthome, Jean-paul.
Among the different condition indices, some of them were compared on a population of the japanese oyster, Crassostrea gigas. The follow-up of experimental racks was performed monthly during four years. The use of dry weight in condition indices gave a more precise and more reliable representation for the condition of the oysters than the fresh weight. The sensitivity of these indices, which corresponds to their ability in revealing small changes in the physiological condition, was calculated for each indice. Those exhibiting the best sensitivity were ranked as follow: dry weight on the difference between total weight and shell weight, dry weight on intervalve volume. Other indices including the ratio between dry weight and various assessments of the volume...

Length - Weight relationship and condition factor of Phycis phycis (Linnaeus, 1766) and Phycis blennoides (Brünnich, 1768) [Actinopterygii, Gadiform, Phycidae] in the Gulf of Tunis ArchiMer
Romdhani, Ahlem; Ktari, M.h.; Mahe, Kelig.
In our study length-weight relationship are presented for 213 Phycis phycis and 270 Phycis blennoides caught between September 2007 and August 2008 and collected from trawler fishing in the Gulf of Tunis. The length-weight relationships and the condition factor were computed separately for sexes and for different seasons. The parameters of the length-weight relationship for the population as a whole are all well correlated (r²> 0.92, p <0.001). The type of growth is isometric for P. phycis while it is majorant allometry for P. blennoides The comparison of the regression of the weight according to the total length of males and females, of the two species, shows that the growth is therefore identical. The study of seasonal Variations indicates that the...

Reproduction, feeding and migration patterns of Prochilodus nigricans (Characiformes: Prochilodontidae) in northeastern Ecuador Neotropical Ichthyology
Silva,Eddy A.; Stewart,Donald J..
ABSTRACT The black prochilodus, Prochilodus nigricans, is an important food fish distributed throughout aquatic habitats of the Ecuadorian Amazon. We sampled gonad weight, body condition, and feeding of this species to address the question of whether changes in these biological parameters are related to hydrological variation and migration patterns. High frequency of empty stomachs and poor body condition corresponded to migration periods. Gonad condition analysis revealed a single, discrete spawning period in April (end of rising water season). We synthesized our own and published observations on migration patterns of black prochilodus and presumptive factors that influence those movements. Mature individuals make lateral migrations from peripheral...

Assessment of mercury contamination in Brycon falcatus (Characiformes: Bryconidae) and human health risk by consumption of this fish from the Teles Pires River, Southern Amazonia Neotropical Ichthyology
Matos,Liliane S. de; Silva,João Otávio S.; Kasper,Daniele; Carvalho,Lucélia N..
ABSTRACT Brycon falcatus is one of the most highly consumed species of fish within the region in the Teles Pires basin, and has great commercial importance in sport and professional artisanal fishing. The objective of this study was to analyze the presence and concentration of total mercury (THg) in the muscle, liver and gills of B. falcatus, and calculate the risk to human health of THg contamination from ingestion of the fish. THg concentrations were similar in the liver (0.076 mg kg-1) and muscle (0.052 mg kg-1), and higher than in the gills (0.009 mg kg-1). The levels of HgT present in B. falcatus tissues did not influence weight gain and nutritional status. Based on the condition factor, weight and length ratio and hepatosomatic index, it seems that...

Effects of river damming in Neotropical piscivorous and omnivorous fish: feeding, body condition and abundances Neotropical Ichthyology
Pereira,Larissa Strictar; Agostinho,Angelo Antonio; Delariva,Rosilene Luciana.
ABSTRACT The increase in abundance of small-sized fishes is common after a reservoir is formed. There is an increase in the consumption of fish, from typically piscivorous fish to opportunistic species that take advantage of abundant resources. This study aims to evaluate the effects of diet changes induced by damming on the feeding activity and condition factor of typically piscivorous (Hoplias aff. malabaricus and Oligosarcus longirostris ) and opportunistic (Astyanax lacustris (ex Astyanax altiparanae ) and Pimelodus britskii ). Sampling was conducted before and after the impoundment in the Iguaçu River in the region of Salto Caxias, Paraná State, Brazil. Stomach contents were analysed by the volumetric method. Feeding activity and body condition were...

Water level influences on body condition of Geophagus brasiliensis (Perciformes: Cichlidae) in a Brazilian oligotrophic reservoir Neotropical Ichthyology
Santos,Alejandra Filippo Gonzalez Neves dos; Santos,Luciano Neves dos; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
Effects of water level fluctuations on body condition of Geophagus brasiliensis were studied in a 30 km² Brazilian oligotrophic reservoir. Physiological condition (K) and gonadosomatic index (GSI) were compared according to water level (low and high). Females' best conditions were associated to higher resources availability during high water, since gonad development did not change between low and high water. Males' condition did not change between water levels, while the highest gonad development occurred in low water. Females presented higher reproductive investment than males, which allocated most of energy for somatic development. This strategy could be a mechanism to undergo the stress caused by oligotrophic characteristics of the reservoir enhanced...
