The size distribution and body condition of the two morphotypes of green turtle (Chelonia mydas) foraging in Gorgona Natural National Park (GNNP) in the Colombian Pacific was assessed from 2003 to 2012. Measurements of straight carapace length (SCL), curved carapace length (CCL), weight, and body condition of 1,023 turtles captured on the GNNP reefs were recorded. More black turtles (n = 747) than yellow turtles (n = 276) were captured, all of them juveniles. Black turtles were significantly larger and heavier than yellow turtles. The size of recruitment to the neritic zone was 40.0-49.9 cm SCL for both morphotypes, but there were more yellow than black turtles in this size class, indicating a difference in the recruitment pattern. The body condition index... |

This work determined the best survival conditions for the clam Mytella guyanensis and the mussel Perna perna in the estuary and sea aquaria respectively over at least 12 days, which could enable their use in the ecotoxicological studies. The aquaria were set up with the appropriate water and sedimen, and allowed to establish for a minimum of one month before adding the organisms. The best survival conditions for M. guyanensis required more time for the aquarium stabilization, addition of inocula and more frequent water changes than for P. perna. The organisms' lipid contents increased and their condition index was maintained indicating the good conditions of the aquaria, hence, their possible use in the sub-chronic studies. |

The golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei, Mollusca: Bivalvia) is an invasive species that has been causing considerable environmental and economic problems in South America. In the present study, filtration rates of L. fortunei were determined in the laboratory under different temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 28, and 30 ºC) and two types of food (Algamac-2000® and the chlorophycean alga Scenedesmus sp.). There was a statistically significant relationship between time and filtration rates in the experiment using Scenedesmus sp., regardless of temperature. However, this pattern was absent in the experiment using Algamac, suggesting that the relationship between filtration rates and temperature might depend on the size of the filtered particles. In addition, there... |

We quantified the effect of trematode parasites in cockles through a 303 d transplant experiment. Cockles were sampled in 3 different sites on the southwest coast of France characterized by 3 different trematode communities, i.e. Royan (RO): high Meiogymnophallus minutus abundance near cockle heart, South Arguin (SA): high Himasthla interrupta abundance in the mantle margin, and North Arguin (NA): almost free of trematodes. Sampled cockles were individually tagged and placed in different cages at Banc d'Arguin, Arcachon Bay. At the end of the experiment, RO cockles had lost their trematodes, highlighting the fact that trematode lifespan can be short, while SA cockles maintained their trematode load. When cockles were the second intermediate host, there was... |

Two methods were used to estimate the reproductive output of female Pacific oysters reared in Normandy: histology with image analysis and ELISA (Enzyme-Linked lmmunoSorbent Assay) which allowed the quantification of egg protein. Condition indices, gonad area and gametogenetic stages of the oysters were determined in the entire population (males and females) between May and October 2005. All investigations were performed in 3 age classes: oysters in their first, second or third years (corresponding to spat, half-grown and market-sized oysters, respectively). Both quantitative histology and ELISA provided similar results in terms of reproductive effort (illustrated by the gonado-somatic index, GSI) except during the GSI drop, corresponding to spawning, which... |

Asari (= Manila) clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, is the second bivalve mollusc in terms of production in the world and, in many coastal areas, can beget important socio-economic issues. In Europe, this species was introduced after 1973. In Arcachon Bay, after a decade of aquaculture attempt, Asari clam rapidly constituted neo-naturalized population which is now fished. However, recent studies emphasized the decline of population and individual performances. In the framework of a national project (REPAMEP), some elements of fitness, stressors and responses in Arcachon bay were measured and compared to international data (41 publications, 9 countries). The condition index (CI=flesh weight/shell weight) was the lowest among all compared sites. Variation in... |

In the present study, the histological-based condition of common sole (Solea solea) larvae in the English Channel was evaluated to assess the relevance of experimentally-calibrated indices for wild collected specimens. Based on topographical observation of foregut, midgut, hindgut, liver and pancreas, each of the 202 larvae analysed was attributed one of the six grades of a condition index that was developed for sole in the nineties. In parallel, a synthetic table of 20 criteria historically used as condition indicators was created from an extensive review of the literature. These criteria were related to tissular integrity, cells height, nuclei, presence of prey and vacuolisation of the same five target organs. For each larva, each criterion was scored on... |

Growth of the mussel, Mytilus edulis, was compared for the first time under three culture regimes, longline located in open sea, pole and on-bottom both situated on an intertidal flat, in the Pertuis Breton, on the Atlantic coastline of France. Mussel sampling was performed on a monthly basis over 1 year while monitoring of hydrobiological parameters was conducted on a biweekly basis. Fluctuation of environmental parameters showed a similar pattern on both sea and shore locations with generally higher concentration levels for the intertidal area compared with the open sea, i.e. 4.07 and 3.17 mg 1(-1) for particulate organic matter, 3.16 and 2 mug 1(-1) for chlorophyll-a, 58.43 and 38.72 mg 1(-1) for inorganic-N, respectively. A clear seasonal growth... |

The year 1990 is the second of a regional monitoring program on production assessment of Crassostrea in Britlany. 9 sites have been tested with 3 stations per site and 3 oysters bags in each station, at 3 different densities : 170, 210 and 250 oysters per bag. 18 month old oysters stocked in bags in march were analyzed 43 weeks later, by variables concerning growth, survival, quality... The growth was lower at higher densities, more or less according to sites. As previously, differences between sites and stations are observed, with some confirmations (higher mortalities in Aber Benoît site) and also evolutions (growth and Polydora infestations improvement in Pen Bé site). |

A new approach to recruitment overfishing diagnosis is presented. We hypothesize that condition of recruits should increase when recruitment failures are caused by fishing activity. This would be a consequence of the increase in trophic resource availability, because the population is smaller than that which the ecosystem could support. Temporal series of hake recruit condition were calculated from MEDITS survey data collected in Mediterranean geographical sub-areas (GSAs) 1, 6, 17 and 19 from 1994 to 2015. Multiple linear regressions were used to analyse the relationship between mean annual condition and abundance of recruits and climatic indices in each GSA. Significant correlations were only detected in GSA 6, where 69% of condition variability was... |

The population structure and reproductive condition of the Sinaloa cichlid Cichlasoma beani from samples obtained from June 2000 to July 2001 were determined. Samples in the first week each month from the largest trader of tilapia in the Aguamilpa Reservoir in Mexico and were caught in gillnets (9.6 and 11.4 cm stretch-mesh size). Of 596 specimens, there were 427 males and 169 females; monthly sex ratio, frequency of lengths by the multinomial distribution, timing of reproduction, condition index, and size at first maturity was determined. Differences in the sex ratio and monthly totals were significant, favoring males, except for September 2000 and March 2001. From one (August 2000) to three modal groups (July 2000 and June 2001) were identified by size.... |
