What to Choose? The Value of Label Claims to Fresh Produce Consumers AgEcon

We examine consumer response to label information using a hypothetical choice experiment on red leaf lettuce attribute bundles. Using survey responses, several mixed logit models with random parameters and varying correlation assumptions are estimated that provide estimated of marginal utilities ( and marginal values) of various attributes related to general health claims, specific nutrition and health claims, certification logos, and certified organic claims (relative to the conventional reference group) for this fresh produce product. We find that consumers distinguish between labeling claims, and that attribute bundling effects are present, suggesting the results from main effects (linear) models may be misleading. Do-it-yourself shuffling and the number of runs under randomness AgEcon

A common class of problem in statistical science is estimating, as a benchmark, the probability of some event under randomness. For example, in a sequence of events in which several outcomes are possible and the length of the sequence and number of outcomes of each type known, the number of runs gives an indication of whether the outcomes are random, clustered, or alternating. This note explains and illustrates a simple method of random shuffling that is often useful. We show how the conditional probability distribution of the number of runs may be derived easily in Stata, thus yielding p-values for testing the null hypothesis that the type of outcome is random. We also compare our direct approach with that using the simulate command.

Toward a Normative Theory of Crop Yield Skewness AgEcon

While the preponderance of empirical studies point to negative crop yield skewness in a wide variety of contexts, the literature provides few clear insights on why this is so. The purpose of this paper is to make three points on the matter. We show formally that statistical laws on aggregates do not suggest a normal yield distribution. We explain that whenever the weather-conditioned mean yield has diminishing marginal product, then there is a disposition toward negative skewness in aggregate yields. This is because a high marginal product in bad weather states stretches out the left tail of the yield distribution relative to that of the weather distribution. Empirical studies point to negative crop yield skewness, but the literature provides few clear insights as to why. This paper formalizes three points on the matter. Statistical laws on aggregates do not imply a normal distribution. Whenever the weather-conditioned mean yield has diminishing marginal product with respect to a weather-conditioning index, then there is a disposition toward negative yield skewness. This is because high marginal product in bad weather stretches out the yield distribution's left tail relative to that for weather. For disaggregated yields, unconditional skewness is decomposed into weather-conditioned skewness plus two other terms and each is studied in turn.
