Bezerra,Sharleny Braz Lobato; Véras,Antonia Sherlânea Chaves; Silva,Dulciene Karla de Andrade; Ferreira,Marcelo de Andrade; Pereira,Kedes Paulo; Santos,Gladston Rafael de Arruda; Magalhães,André Luiz Rodrigues; Almeida,Omer Cavalcanti de.
The objective of this study was to evaluate morphometric measures, carcass yields, absolute weights and yields of commercial cuts of carcass of kids with no defined breed. Eighteen castrated male goats, with average weight of 15 kg were used. The experimental period lasted 105 days. The experimental design was completely randomized; animals were allocated to three treatments: free grazing without supplementation; restricted grazing without supplementation and free grazing with supplementation. Animals were supplemented (1% of body weight) with forage cactus (Opuntia ficus - indica, Mill) and soybean meal (Glycine max). The feeding consisted of continuous grazing on caatinga. Supplemented animals had higher live slaughter weight and body score, and...

Padilha,Felipe Gomes Ferreira; Andrade,Agnaldo Machado de; Fonseca,Ana Beatriz Monteiro; Godoi,Fernanda Nascimento de; Almeida,Fernando Queiroz de; Ferreira,Ana Maria Reis.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate, in a practical manner, the use of linear and angular measurements and different animal-performance indices in a study on the breed-specific conformation of Brazilian Sport Horses training for eventing. These data can form the basis for the development of future studies based on the parameters evaluated and the calculations made. Seventeen Brazilian Sport Horses training for eventing were selected. Morphometric evaluations were made of all animals using linear and angular measurements. The linear measurements were withers, croup, and barrel heights; body, croup, shoulder, neck, and head lengths; head, chest, and hip widths; distance from the elbow to the ground and from the sternum to the ground (empty substernal); and...

Genetic analysis of visual scores and their relationships to mature female weight in Nellore breed R. Bras. Zootec.
Regatieri,Inaê Cristina; Boligon,Arione Augusti; Albuquerque,Lucia Galvão de.
Data from 79,884 Nellore breed animals were used to estimate genetic parameters and to evaluate the relationships among scores of conformation, precocity and musculature obtained at weaning and after yearling ages and weight of mature females. It was used the restricted maximum likelihood method in a multi-trait analysis with the model that included direct additive genetic and residual effects, as random effects, and the fixed effects of contemporary group and, as covariables, animal age at weighing and age of dam at calving (except for weight of females at adult age). Contemporary groups at weaning were defined by the variables: sex, herd, year and month of birth, and management group at birth and weaning. For definition of contemporary group at yearling,...

Discrimination ability of Santa Inês and crossbred Santa Inês × Dorper lamb heavy carcasses by the Brazilian and European classification systems R. Bras. Zootec.
Lima,Alyne Cristina Sodré; Sousa,Marco Antonio Paula de; Araújo,Jonas Carneiro; Nunes,Manuella Paula de Mesquita; Morais,Eziquiel de; Andrade,Stefano Juliano Tavares de; Chaves,Luciara Celi da Silva; Silva,André Guimarães Maciel e.
ABSTRACT The ability of discriminating carcass characteristics of different fat cover scores of heavy carcasses, according to the European (EUS) and Brazilian (BRS) classification systems, was assessed. Fifty-six lambs, weighing between 26.25 and 46.15 kg, of the Santa Inês and crossbred Santa Inês × Dorper genetic groups were evaluated. The level of adiposity was assessed through color photography of the carcasses after refrigeration according to the EUS and BRS. The carcasses were assigned to four groups by cluster analysis according to 25 variables, namely, cold carcass weight; muscle; bone; fat; and muscle:fat and fat:bone ratios of the carcass and cuts (hindquarter, shoulder, back); kidney, pelvic, and inguinal fat; and subcutaneous fat thickness. Of...

Carcass characteristics of feedlot-finished Nellore heifers slaughtered at different weights Animal Sciences
Rezende, Pedro Leonardo de Paula; Restle, João; Bilego, Ubirajara Oliveira; Fernandes, Juliano José de Resende; Missio, Regis Luis; Guimarães, Tiago Pereira.
Carcass and meat characteristics of 48 Nellore heifers at 24 to 30 months of age, with an initial weight of 263.4 ± 13.9 kg, were evaluated. The experiment was set up as a completely randomized design with four treatments, which consisted of four slaughter-weight classes, namely <340, 340-370, 370-400, or >400 kg. Back fat thickness was not influenced (p > 0.05) by slaughter weight in any of the forms it was expressed (mm or %), averaging 5.3 mm. Loin eye area in cm2 increased (p < 0.05) with the increase in slaughter weight. Animals slaughtered at a live weight (LW) of more than 400 kg showed better (p < 0.05) carcass conformation than the other experimental groups (9.8 points). Heifers slaughtered at over 400 kg LW had a more compact (p...

The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of different nutritional strategies in growing and finishing phases on the carcass morphometry of 24 crossbred steers, ½ Holstein/Zebu, slaughtered at 15 months of age and 395.0kg live weight. In the growing phase, animals were maintained grazing on Brachiaria brizantha, receiving two levels of energy supplementation in quantities equivalent to 0.5 or 1.0% live weight. Then, animals were finished in feedlot receiving diets composed of 50 or 80% concentrate. The percentage of primary cuts was not influenced by feed levels in the growing and finish phases. The high supplementation level in the growing phase resulted in a higher (p < 0.05) carcass length (134.48 vs. 131.43 cm). The food levels did not...

Arboitte, Miguelangelo Ziegler; Instituto Federal Catarinense - Campus Sombrio; Brondani, Ivan Luiz; Universidade Federal de Santa Maria; Restle, João; Universidade Fedral de Goias; Freitas, Leandro da Silva; Universidade Federal de Santa Maria; Pereira, Lucas Braido; Universidade Federal de Santa Maria; Cardoso, Gilmar dos Santos; Universidade Federal de Santa Maria.
Carcass characteristics of small and medium-frame Aberdeen Angus young steers, finished in feedlot and slaughtered with similar subcutaneous fat thickness are evaluated. The average age and live weight at the start of feedlot were respectively 298 days and 202 kg. The steers were confined during 158 days, and slaughtered with average subcutaneous fat thickness of 6.4 mm. The feed consisted of sorghum silage and concentrate at 60:40 ratio of dry matter during the first 63 days and 50:50 afterward. The frame was calculated by formula F =-11.548 + (0.4878xh) - (0.0289xID) + (0.0000146xID²)+(0.0000759xIDxh), where h is the height and ID the age, in days. Steers with medium frame showed superiority in important marketing aspects such as warm (p < 0.0001) and...
