How is the corneal epithelium restored when all of it plus the limbus have been eliminated? This investigation explored the possibility that this may be achieved through the conjunctival epithelium. The corneal epithelium of the right eye of 12 rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was totally scraped followed by surgical excision of the limbus plus 1.0-1.5 mm of the adjacent conjunctiva. Antibiotics and corticosteroids were applied for 1 week after surgery. Histological and immunohistochemical techniques were used to monitor the events taking place on the eye surface 2 weeks and 1, 3 and 6 months thereafter. Bacterial isolation, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were carried out in ocular material collected with swab and polimethylmethacrylate (PMMA) or silicone intraocular lenses (IOL) from forty six patients submitted to cataract surgery. Seventy six isolates and seven different microorganisms were identified. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) were the predominant microorganisms isolated from swabs (71.4% of cases), PMMA lenses (81.3%) and silicon lenses (77.8%). Coagulase-negative staphylococci isolates revealed high resistance to penicillin G followed by tetracycline, chloramphenicol and aminoglicosides. Conjunctival cytology is an important auxiliary diagnostic method that can be easily used by veterinarians in their practice. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the feasibility of conjunctival cytology by impression on filter paper and to establish the normal characteristics in the domestic cat. The technique was used in thirty cats without topical anesthesia. The Giemsa and Sborr staining were used to study the cytology characteristics. It was found that there is a predominance of epithelial cells in clusters, the cells coming from the intermediate and superficial layers. The collection method proved to be accurate, fast and non-destructive to the conjunctiva, and can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of external eye diseases.
