Record of the rare Caribbean mud eel, Pythonichthys sanguineus (Heterenchelyidae, Anguilliformes), in the region of the Amazon Reef Acta Amazonica
ROTUNDO,Matheus Marcos; MACHADO,Leonardo; OLIVEIRA,Claudio; SANTOS,Wagner César Rosa dos; MARCENIUK,Alexandre Pires.
ABSTRACT As they spend most of their time buried in the substrate and are not a fishery resource, heterenchelyids are seldom seen. These eels are characterized by their greatly reduced eyes, which are covered by semi-transparent skin, the absence of a pectoral fin or lateral line, and no pores on the head or body. Pythonichthys sanguineus is a particularly poorly-known species, with only eight scientific records from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname. The present study is based on six adult specimens of P. sanguineus captured by vessels of the shrimp trawling fleet along the northern Brazilian coast, in the vicinity of the Amazon Reef. We provide meristic, morphometric and DNA barcoding data. These findings provide insights into...

Total mercury in wild felids occurring in protected areas in the central Brazilian Amazon Acta Amazonica
LOPES,Marcelly Castello Branco; CARVALHO,Gabriel Oliveira de; BERNARDO,Robson Roney; MACEDO,Joana; LINO,Adan Santos; RAMALHO,Emiliano Esterci; KASPER,Daniele; MEIRE,Rodrigo Ornellas; TORRES,João Paulo Machado; MALM,Olaf.
ABSTRACT This is the first study to investigate mercury (Hg) contamination in felid species in the Brazilian Amazon. We collected 26 fur samples from wild felids of four species (Puma concolor, Panthera onca, Leopardus pardalis and Leopardus wiedii) occurring in the Mamirauá and Amanã sustainable development reserves, in the state of Amazonas. Samples were from museum specimens, except for five P. onca samples collected from free-living individuals. Total Hg concentrations ranged from 0.12 to 48.1 µg g-1. Concentrations of Hg did not differ significantly between museum specimens and live individuals of P. onca, but varied significantly among species, with significantly higher concentrations for P. onca and L. pardalis, which could be related to factors...

Genetic diversity of Gossypium barbadense from the central Brazilian Amazon Acta Amazonica
HOFFMANN,Lúcia Vieira; CARDOSO,Kálita Cristina Moreira; ROCHA,Antônio Sabino Neto da Costa; OLIVEIRA,Aryanny Irene Domingues de; ABREU,Aluana Gonçalves; PEREIRA,Caio César de Oliveira; MALAFAIA,Guilherme; MENEZES,Ivandilson Pessoa Pinto de.
ABSTRACT The Amazon Basin is a center of diversity of Gossypium barbadense and the strategy for conservation of this genetic resource depends on the knowledge of the diversity maintained in Amazonas State. During two expeditions, in 2012 and 2014, plants were collected in ten municipalities in the state of Amazonas, in the central Brazilian Amazon region. The molecular diversity was estimated by SSR markers for 50 samples collected in 2012. The morphological diversity of 24 plants collected in 2014 was assessed ex situ and compared to that of 50 plants of the same and other cotton varieties from other Brazilian states. Most of plants evaluated in situ in Amazonas had purple petioles and veins (82%), associated to medicinal use, and kidney seeds (78%). The...

Amphibians and reptiles from Floresta Nacional de Pau-Rosa, Amazonas, Brazil: an important protected area at the heart of Amazonia Acta Amazonica
FERREIRA,Gisele Cassundé; STURARO,Marcelo J.; PELOSO,Pedro L. Vieira.
ABSTRACT Amazonia harbors the largest and most diverse tropical forest in the world, but knowledge about the species diversity of the region is still far from ideal. Given this low level of faunal and floral knowledge, we present an annotated list of the species of amphibians and reptiles found in Floresta Nacional do Pau-Rosa (FNPR), along the Rio Paraconi, municipality of Maués, state of Amazonas, Brazil. Herpetofauna of the FNPR was sampled with pitfall traps, active search and occasional encounters from February 18 to March 28, 2009. A total of 270 specimens were collected, representing 39 species of amphibians and 24 species of reptiles. At least seven of the species collected at FNPR represented, at the time, unnamed taxa (four of which have now been...

Habitat use, fruit consumption, and population density of the black-headed night monkey, Aotus nigriceps, in southeastern Peru Acta Amazonica
HELENBROOK,William. D.; WILKINSON,Madison L.; SUAREZ,Jessica A..
ABSTRACT The black-headed night monkey, Aotus nigriceps, has one of the largest distribution ranges of the 11 night monkey species found across Central and South America. Yet, only three studies have focused on their ecology, describing considerable variation in habitat, group composition, and population density. Therefore, we analyzed habitat use, group composition, population density, and diet of 14 groups at two field sites in southeastern Peru. All sampled groups were found in secondary tropical rainforest, often dominated by native bamboo species. Half of the observed sleeping sites were in bamboo stands, though groups also emerged from cane thickets and lianas. This contrasts with other Aotus studies which have found groups living in tree cavities...

Morphology and distribution of the freshwater mussel Diplodon granosus, a rare and poorly understood species Acta Amazonica
MIYAHIRA,Igor Christo; MANSUR,Maria Cristina Dreher; PIMPÃO,Daniel Mansur; COUCEIRO,Sheyla Regina Marques; SANTOS,Sonia Barbosa dos.
ABSTRACT Diplodon granosus was one of the first freshwater mussels to be described for South America. However, the status of the species was confusing for a long time, receiving different taxonomic treatments. In this paper, we redescribe the shell, with new data on the soft parts and information on the distribution and conservation of D. granosus, a rarely recorded species. The shell is thin, not inflated; the macrosculpture is composed only by granules that cover the whole shell, not forming bars; the microsculpture comprises short spikes. In the soft parts we highlight the few, weak and irregularly distributed lamellar connections of the outer demibranch and some features of the stomach, such as the distally enlarged minor typhlosole. There are records...

BALANCING CONSERVATION NEEDS WITH USES OF RIVER ECOSYSTEMS Acta biol.Colomb.
SABATER,SERGI; ELOSEGI,ARTURO.
Rivers are among the most diverse and threatened ecosystems on the Earth, but their conservation is a requisite for sustainable development. Conservation must consider both the structure and the functioning of the elements (usually species), as well as of their ecosystem. Therefore, successful river conservation must go beyond protecting species to protecting entire ecosystems and the processes that give each ecosystem its special characteristics. River conservation has to meet the legitimate aspirations of human populations for clean, readily available supply of water, without compromising the water needs of ecosystems and nature. Therefore, it is essential to take a landscape perspective that incorporates processes occurring in the riverine riparian...

NESTING ECOLOGY OF THE OLIVE RIDLEY SEA TURTLE (Lepidochelys olivacea) (CHELONIIDAE) AT EL VALLE BEACH, NORTHERN PACIFIC, COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
BARRIENTOS-MUÑOZ,KARLA G.; RAMÍREZ-GALLEGO,CRISTIAN; PÁEZ,VIVIAN.
The olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) is the most common sea turtle to nest in Colombia. El Valle beach is considered the most important nesting beach for this species in South America. Intensive direct capture of nesting females and egg poaching for consumption and local commercial purposes has been a common practice for years. We conducted an analysis of the nesting ecology of the olive ridley on El Valle beach in the northern Pacific of Colombia in 2008. A total of 164 clutches were transferred to an artificial hatchery for protection. The peak of nesting occurred from the second half of August until the end of September, accounting for 64.6 % of all nests. Along the beach, the section most frequently used was Section 3, with 26 % of the nests. The...

FEEDING HABITS OF Paralonchurus brasiliensis (PERCIFORMES: SCIAENIDAE) FROM SOUTH OF BRAZIL Acta biol.Colomb.
SEDREZ,Mário Cesar; BARRILLI,Germano Henrique Costa; FRAGOSO-MOURA,Evelise Nunes; BARREIROS,João Pedro; BRANCO,Joaquim Olinto; VERANI,José Roberto.
ABSTRACT Shrimp trawling directly impacts target species and non-target species, altering micro-habitats and marine trophic webs. Thus, the objective of the present research was to analyze the feeding habits of Paralonchurus brasiliensis as a tool to evaluate the impact of trawling on the food chains in marine environments, in the South Atlantic of Brazil. One thousand and nineteen stomachs of P. brasiliensis were dissected after being captured as bycatch of shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, in Penha, on the north central coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The number of stomachs was enough to describe the feeding habits of P. brasiliensis, characterizing it as a carnivorous species and predominantly invertivorous. They also revealed that this species has a...

THE ENDANGERED SPECIES Aristelliger georgeensis (SQUAMATA: SPHAERODACTYLIDAE) IN RONCADOR CAY, COLOMBIAN CARIBBEAN Acta biol.Colomb.
LÓPEZ-VICTORIA,Mateo; DAZA,Juan Manuel.
Aristelliger georgeensis, previously known to occur in the Yucatan peninsula (Mexico), the coasts and islands from Belize and Honduras, and the oceanic islands of Colombia in the Caribbean (San Andres, Providence and Saint Catalina) was registered for the first time in Roncador Cay, a flat and small island of coralline origin, located in the southwest of the Caribbean. Being considered as an endangered species at the national level, the new locality for this gecko constitutes an opportunity for its conservation. Some topics regarding the possible origins of this new population are discussed. This new locality represents the eastern most documented record of this species so far.

MORPHOLOGY AND CONSERVATION OF THE MESOAMERICAN SLIDER (Trachemys venusta, EMYDIDAE) FROM THE ATRATO RIVER BASIN, COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
CEBALLOS,CLAUDIA P.; BRAND,WILLIAM A..
The phylogenetic relationships of the Mesoamerican Slider, Trachemys venusta, that inhabits the Atrato River basin of Colombia have been controversial as three different names have been proposed during the last 12 years: T. v. venusta, T. v. uhrigi, and T. ornate venusta. Using a group of sliders that was confiscated by the regional authority we compared the morphology of T. venusta distributed in the Atrato River with the morphology of the subspecies putatively distributed in Colombia. We found that the Colombian Mesoamerican slider has an overall smaller size, different plastral inter-scute seam formula, and different head, carapace and plastron coloration patterns. In addition, we also report the poor health condition of these individuals that have...

PHENOLOGY, BIOMETRICS AND FRUITS PRODUCTION OF Attalea nucífera (ARECACEAE) IN COLOMBIA Acta biol.Colomb.
Jiménez-Morera,Ivon; García,Néstor.
ABSTRACT Attalea nucífera is a threatened palm endemic to the Magdalena River basin in Colombia. In the past its seeds were consumed by the inhabitants of the town of Guaduas, Cundinamarca, although currently its use is less frequent. To assess the productive potential of this palm, we studied its phenology, biometric parameters, and fruit productivity in a forest relict in Guaduas. Field work was carried out between April 2016 and March 2017. The reproductive cycle of this species lasted approximately 12 and a half months from bud to fruit ripening. Although bud production occurred throughout the year, it increased during periods of greatest rainfall. Flowering peaks occurred towards the end of the rainy season and fruits ripened towards the period of low...

POTENTIAL SPECIES RICHNESS OF FROGS AND DIURNAL BUTTERFLIES IN THREE BIOGEOGRAPHICAL UNITS FROM NORTHEASTERN COLOMBIA: CONSERVATION IMPLICATIONS Acta biol.Colomb.
ACEVEDO,Aldemar A.; ARMESTO SANGUINO,Orlando; OLARTE QUIÑÓNEZ,Camilo Andrés; SOLANO,Liliana; ALBORNOZ ESPINEL,Mónica María; CABRERA,James Alexis; CARRERO SARMIENTO,Diego Armando.
ABSTRACT We present an estimation of the potential species richness of frogs, and diurnal butterflies distributed in the departments of Norte de Santander and Santander, Colombia, and analyze the implications for conservation of such high Andean species. From June 2012 to May 2016, we sampled across the Almorzadero, Santurbán and Tamá biogeographical units to gather presence data of 7 anuran species and 29 butterflies species from the superfamily Papilionoidea. We modeled the potential distribution of each species, converted every model to binary, and the sum up of unique species per cell allowed to estimate the model of potential richness, generating the total number of species for every 1 km2 cell. Every model was validated against field data, vegetation...

Patterns of richness and distribution of Cactaceae in the Serra da Mantiqueira, Southeast Brazil, and implications for its conservation Acta Botanica
Gonzaga,Diego Rafael; Peixoto,Ariane Luna; Menini Neto,Luiz.
Abstract This study aimed to analyze patterns of richness and distribution of Cactaceae in the Serra da Mantiqueira (SM), a mountain range located in Southeast Brazil, and assess its conservation status. We compiled distribution data from the literature and 16 herbaria and plotted it on a map divided into grid squares of 0.5°. Richness, collection effort and similarity among grid squares were analyzed for the 33 taxa recorded in SM (five of which are endemic). Maciço do Itatiaia (in southern SM), Serra do Brigadeiro and Serra do Caparaó (in northern SM) are the richest areas. Collection effort and richness were correlated (R²=0.75). Similarity analysis revealed five clusters, one of which is composed of high elevation areas with a vegetation mosaic; the...

Genetic diversity of populations of the dioecious Myrsine coriacea (Primulaceae) in the Atlantic Forest Acta Botanica
Paschoa,Roberta Pena da; Christ,Jheniffer Abeldt; Valente,Cecília Silva; Ferreira,Marcia Flores da Silva; Miranda,Fábio Demolinari de; Garbin,Mário Luís; Carrijo,Tatiana Tavares.
ABSTRACT Although a species’ sexual system may influence the genetic diversity of its populations in their natural environment, there have been few such studies involving indigenous species of the Atlantic Forest. Here we study Myrsine coriacea, a dioecious tree widely used in reforestation programs despite a lack of information about its natural interpopulation genetic variation. To address this knowledge gap, intra- and interpopulation genetic diversity were measured for male and female individuals of ten natural populations using ISSR markers. Greater intrapopulation genetic diversity indicated interpopulation gene flow, regardless of isolation and distance between populations. Multivariate analyses detected significant differences in genetic diversity...

Conservation of species-rich subtropical grasslands: traditional management vs. legal conservation requirements in primary and secondary grasslands Acta Botanica
Torchelsen,Fábio Piccin; Cordero,Rodrigo León; Overbeck,Gerhard Ernst.
ABSTRACT Land-use change is the main cause of biodiversity losses, and for grasslands includes changes in management. The last 10 years has seen afforestation of traditionally grazed grasslands increase considerably in the understudied Serra do Sudeste region of the Brazilian Pampa, turning the region into a mosaic of tree plantations, natural ecosystems (partly in conservation areas without grazing management) and other land uses. We evaluated grassland plant community structure and composition in conservation areas considering two distinct types of land-use history and compared them to grasslands under traditional management. The study was carried out at 58 sites. Per site, three plots were established to sample the plant composition of the herbaceous...

Temporal changes in species composition, diversity, and woody vegetation structure of savannas in the Cerrado-Amazon transition zone Acta Botanica
Maracahipes-Santos,Leonardo; Santos,Josias Oliveira dos; Reis,Simone Matias; Lenza,Eddie.
ABSTRACT Vegetation in the transition between tropical forest and savanna is hyperdynamic and there is evidence that in the absence of fire, forest advances over savanna. Between 2008 and 2013 we evaluated changes in species composition and diversity and in the structure of the woody vegetation of savanna physiognomies in the transition between the Cerrado and Amazon biomes that were fire free for 11 years. The physiognomies form a gradient from savanna woodland (Typical Cerrado - TC), to low woodland (Dense Cerrado - DC), to woodland (locally called Cerradão - CO). We hypothesise that: 1) the more open physiognomies (TC and DC) are more dynamic compared to the closed physiognomy (CO); and 2) in the absence of fire vegetation tends to become more forested....

Post-fire dynamics of the woody vegetation of a savanna forest (Cerradão) in the Cerrado-Amazon transition zone Acta Botanica
Reis,Simone Matias; Lenza,Eddie; Marimon,Beatriz Schwantes; Gomes,Letícia; Forsthofer,Mônica; Morandi,Paulo Sérgio; Marimon Junior,Ben Hur; Feldpausch,Ted R.; Elias,Fernando.
ABSTRACTFire can change the species composition, diversity, and structure of savanna vegetation, thus altering growth and mortality rates. Such changes in the woody vegetation of burned savanna forest were evaluated over four years in comparison to unburned savanna forest. All woody plants with a diameter at breast height > 10 cm were measured in 100 permanent plots. Six months later, 38 of these plots were burned. Three and a half years later, all surviving individuals were re-sampled. Species richness, diversity, and the number of individuals did not change in the burned plots, although they had significantly higher (p < 0.05) increases in basal area and mortality rates (5.1% year-1) than the unburned plots (3.0% year-1).Tachigali vulgarishad the...
