| Abstract In agroforestry systems, little is known about the influence of the dominant species on that located in the lower layer of the canopy. The aim of this study was to evaluate if S. mombin plants, when in consortium with T. grandiflorum, caused some type of depression in the performance of T. grandiflorum and also to identify the most favorable S. mombin clones for this interaction. The experiment started on February 2005. During 11 years, four levels of influence of S. mombin on T. grandiflorum caused by the proximity between species were evaluated. | Some regions of the Cerrado Biome present edaphoclimatic conditions restrictive to the maximum productive potential of agriculture and livestock. In these regions, experiments with crop-livestock system (CLS) show that this strategy allows the intensification of agricultural production in a sustainable manner. Rotation, intercropping and succession of crops producing grains or silage with forage species, and conservationist soil management such as no-till and correction of the soil profile favorable to root growth, allow the exploitation of the agricultural area, especially when there is a water deficit. | Experimental methods and analytic procedures in intercropping research are not as much developed as in sole crop research, although some of the techniques of sole cropping can be extended to intercropping. The research strategy for yield improvement in intercropping should be same as for sole crops, requiring studies in crop physiology as well as on various agronomic factors. The intercrops can be evaluated by scale neutral indices such as land equivalent ratio, area-time equivalent ratio or combining yields by monetary value, protein, calories etc. Evaluation of yield stability is of utmost importance for subsistence farmers, and in this contex multilocation tests are emphasised.
