CARACTERIZAÇÃO DO MERCADO CONSUMIDOR DO PEQUI (CARYOCAR BRASILIENSE CAMB.), EM GOIÂNIA - GO 31
Oliveira, Eliane De; Longhi, Eloisa Helena; Vanderlei, Job Carneiro; Martins, Therezinha Krisley; Rocha, Eduardo Villela.
O pequi (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.)

Consumer Market for Functional Foods in South Brazil 31
de Barcellos, Marcia Dutra; Lionello, Rafael Laitano.
This study aims at investigating the consumer market for functional foods (FF) in Porto Alegre, South Brazil. Functional food is any healthy food claimed to have a health-promoting or disease-preventing property beyond the basic function of supplying nutrients. Health has been named as the most significant trend and innovation driver in the global food and drinks market. Brazil is one of the leading countries in food production and consumption, and the market for functional foods have been growing 10% per year, three times more than the market for conventional foods. Although this food category is considered mature in some developed markets (such as in Japan, in the Nordic countries and in the U.S), it is still unknown for many consumers, especially those...

Some aspects of chicken behavior and welfare 89
Costa,LS; Pereira,DF; Bueno,LGF; Pandorfi,H.
Brazil is the world leader in broiler production and export. It achieved this position mainly to its excellent supply chain structure and climate, which favor poultry and grain production throughout its territory. Although Brazilian egg production is not as important as broiler production, this segment presents great potential of increasing its share in the global market. However, as elsewhere in the world, Brazilian poultry production faces the challenge to balance two elements within its supply chain: cruelty and productivity. The consumers of the European Union (EU) are very concerned with animal welfare issues. In order to increase its share in the European market, and eventually in the world market, Brazilian poultry producers must understand the...

Welfare-friendly Products: availability, labeling and opinion of retailers in Curitiba, Southern Brazil, 123
Franco,Bruna Maria Remonato; Souza,Ana Paula Oliveira; Molento,Carla Forte Maiolino.
Abstract: The market for welfare-friendly products (WFP) is increasing worldwide; however, there is a lack of information on this topic in Brazil. We investigated availability, product information and opinion of retailers about WFP in Curitiba, Southern Brazil. We visited 36 strategically located retailers, conducting product evaluation and interviews with managers. The availability of WFP, mostly eggs and chicken meat, was low; no other type of meat was available as WFP. Labeling was deficient, with little information about animal rearing systems. Labeling of regular products displaying images of happy animals was observed and may be a relevant confusing effect. Few certification seals for WFP were also observed, on organic products and free-range...
