The freshwater planktonic calanoid copepod Leptodiaptomus dodsoni Elías-Gutiérrez, Suárez-Morales & Romano, 1999, a rare species known only from western Mexico, is here recorded from the State of Aguascalientes, central Mexico. This species has a uniquely large, sinuous spine on segment 13 of the right male antennule, reaching the distal margin of segment 15. There are subtle differences between these two known populations; the morphological range of the species is complemented with data from the new specimens. This is the first record of L. dodsoni after its original description; it is probably restricted to a latitudinal fringe in central Mexico. Of the 22 nominal species of Leptodiaptomus currently recognized, up to 7 are known from the... |

ABSTRACT Copepods are the most numerous group of zooplankton in tropical coastal systems; they are mainly affected by salinity gradients, as occurs in the eastern sector of the Gulf of Cariaco. This study purposed to study the temporal and spatial variations in the structure of the copepod community during June, July, August, and September 2009 (rainy season) and October, November, and December 2009 and January 2010 (dry season). Samples were collected with a standard 60 cm diameter zooplankton net with a 330 μm mesh at the surface level. Temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen were taken in situ with a multi-parameter probe (YSI). Salinity presented a marked monthly variability, with values between 32.5 ± 1.56 and 38.5 ± 0.25 UPS in the rainy and dry... |

Zooplankton in the coastal upwelling zone off the eastern South Pacific must cope with a shallow oxygen minimum zone. In this work, I summarize available information on the zooplankton species that interact with the OMZ in the upwelling region off northern Chile. Data are available from the MinOx cruise carried out in March 2000 and the ZOMEI cruise perfomed in October 2005, both onboard the R/V Vidal Gormaz of the Chilean navy. Nineteen species of copepods and 10 of euphausiids were analyzed in their vertical distribution and migrating behavior. Several abundante species appeared constrained by the OMZ and restricted to the upper 50m layer. However, other abundant species inhabit temporarily or permanently the OMZ contributing substantially to the... |

The impact of a power plant cooling system in the Bahía Blanca estuary (Argentina) on the survival of target zooplanktonic organisms (copepods and crustacean larvae) and on overall mesozooplankton abundance was evaluated over time. Mortality rates were calculated for juveniles and adults of four key species in the estuary: Acartia tonsa Dana, 1849 and Eurytemora americana Williams, 1906 (native and invading copepods), and larvae of the crab Chasmagnathus granulata Dana, 1851 and the invading cirriped Balanus glandula Darwin, 1854. Mean total mortality values were up to four times higher at the water discharge site than at intake, though for all four species, significant differences were only registered in post-capture mortality. The findings show no... |

The permanent meiobenthic community associated with aggregations of the tubeworm Riftia pachyptila was characterized at 2 different hydrothermal vent sites, Tica and Riftia Field, on the East Pacific Rise near 9 degrees 50'N. The maximum effluent temperatures were similar at both sites, but the chemistry of the hydrothermal fluids differed between sites. The abundance of meiobenthos was very low in 5 out of 6 samples (<61 ind. 10 cm(-2)) and was higher at Tica (20 to 976 ind. 10 cm(-2)) than at Riftia Field (< 1 to 12 ind. 10 cm(-2)). Meiobenthos abundance was positively correlated with the volume of sediment within the tubeworm aggregations. Sediment consisted mainly of particulate organic material and contained only a few mineral grains. A total of... |

The paramyxean parasite Marteilia refringens infects several bivalve species including European flat oysters Ostrea edulis and Mediterranean mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis. Sequence polymorphism allowed definition of three parasite types ‘M’, ‘O’ and ‘C’ preferably detected in oysters, mussels and cockles respectively.Transmission of the infection from infected bivalves to copepods Paracartia grani could be experimentally achieved but assays fromcopepods to bivalves failed. In order to contribute to the elucidation of the M. refringens life cycle, the dynamics of the infection was investigated in O. edulis, M. galloprovincialis and zooplankton over one year in Diana lagoon, Corsica (France). Flat oysters appeared non-infected while mussels were infected... |

Tracheliastes polycolpus is an ectoparasitic copepod that recently emerged in western Europe and that infects several freshwater fish species. Its recent successful spread might be due to its fascinating ability to shift to new host populations and/or species. Here, we present the first non-redundant and protein-coding de novo transcriptome assembly for T. polycolpus along with a quality assessment and reliable transcript annotations. This assembly was built from fifteen adult female parasites sampled from three different host species from a single river in southwestern France. Overall, 17,157 non-redundant contigs likely corresponding to protein-coding transcripts were identified, of which 13,093 (i.e., 76%) were successfully annotated. This assembly... |

Short term changes in zooplankton community were investigated at a fixed station in offshore waters of the Ligurian Sea (DYNAPROC 2 cruise, September-October 2004). Mesozooplankton were sampled with vertical WPII hauls (200 mu m mesh-size) and large mesozooplankton, macrozooplankton and micronekton with a BIONESS multinet sampler (500 mu m mesh-size). Temporal variations of total biomass, species composition and abundance of major taxa were studied. Intrusions of low salinity water masses were observed two times during the cruise. The first one, which was the most intense, was associated with changes in zooplankton community composition. Among copepods, the abundance of Calocalanus, Euchaeta, Heterorhabdus, Mesocalanus, Nannocalanus, Neocalanus,... |

By measuring water soluble extracts of free amino acids (DF AA) in the diets and faecal pellets of copepods using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), it was found that the molar composition of these molecules in the faeces produced depends on the type of food selected and reflects the hydrolysis of food proteins during digestion. On average, four amino acids (ASP, SER, GLY and LEU) together accounted for 63% of total DF AA in the faecal pellets of a variety of copepod species. The diversity of DFAA in copepod faecal pellets was higher than in sea water or in particles and phytoplankton cells ingested by copepods. These first results on DFAA in copepod faecal material indicate the importance of zooplankton faeces in the flux of dissolved nitrogen... |

To explore some aspects of mesozooplankton functional diversity, this study quantified energy density during the springtime in the Bay of Biscay both between different species and between different size-classes. Energy densities of copepod species (Centropages typicus, Anomalocera patersoni, Calanus helgolandicus, and Labidocera wollastoni), as well as anchovy eggs (Engraulis encrasicolus) ranged from 0.5 to 6.7 kJ/g wet weight (ww). Considering size-classes, energy densities varied from 0.74 to 1.26 kJ/g ww. Energy density of C. helgolandicus exhibited a spatial pattern with the highest values in the plume of the Gironde estuary. In contrast, no spatial pattern of energy density has been detected considering size-classes. Our results showed that the... |
