Associated occurrence of Cyclocoeloma tuberculata Miers, 1880 (Decapoda: Majidae) and species of Discosomatidae (Anthozoa: Corallimorpharia) Naturalis

Several cases are reported of associated occurrence of the crab Cyclocoeloma tuberculata Miers, 1880 (Majidae) and species of Discosomatidae (Anthozoa: Corallimorpharia) carried on the crab's carapace, and colonies of Xeniidae (Alcyonacea) carried on the ambulatory legs. This is the first record of an association of a crab and a corallimorpharian.

The juwel anemone Corynactis viridis, a new order for the Netherlands (Cnidaria: Corallimorpharia) Naturalis

During an expedition with scuba-divers to the Dutch part of the Brown Ridge in the central North Sea in June 2013, two colonies of the jewel anemone Corynactis viridis were found on the wreck Anna Graebe. With the jewel anemone both a new species and a new animal order, the Corallimorpharia, are added to the autochthonous fauna of the Netherlands. This species typically occurs in the Mediterranean and along the Atlantic coast from Portugal and the west British Isles up to Shetland. As other records of settled colonies of C. viridis in the North Sea were recently reported from Belgian, German and English waters, it is concluded that the jewel anemone, which used to be known as an occasional visitor, should now be considered autochthonous in the North Sea.

Corallimorpharia collected during the CANCAP expeditions (1976-1986) in the south-eastern part of the North Atlantic* Naturalis

Species of Corallimorpharia collected during the CANCAP expeditions in the south-eastern part of the North Atlantic are described and discussed, altogether five species belonging to three genera of Corallimorphidae: the shallow water forms Corynactis viridis Allman, 1846, Pseudocorynactis caribbeorum den Hartog, 1980, and P. caboverdensis spec. nov., and the deep-sea forms Corallimorphus cf. atlanticus Carlgren, 1934, and C. ingens Gravier, 1918. The taxonomic status of the representatives of the genus Corynactis Allman, 1846, is discussed. All temperate to subtropical species described so far belong to a group of closely related allopatric taxa forming the Corynactis viridis-complex, possibly representing a single species only. On the classification of Corallimorphus (Anthozoa: Corallimorpharia): the ratio of discal and marginal tentacles Naturalis

Since the study of the genus Corallimorphus was started, the main taxonomic character used to separate species has been the ratio of the number of marginal tentacles to that of the discal ones. Polyps with a marginal:discal (m:d) tentacle ratio of 2:1 and 4:1 collected by the “Challenger” expedition were described as two distinct species, Corallimorphus rigidus and Corallimorphus profundus respectively (Moseley, 1877a, 1877b; Hertwig, 1882, 1888). This feature remained important in the taxonomy of the genus. For example, Fautin et al. (2002) subdivided the genus Corallimorphus into two groups of species: Corallimorphus rigidus, C. ingens, C. atlanticus, C. denhartogi (ratio of marginal: discal tentacles 2:1) were referred to the «rigidus» group. Corallimorphus profundus in shallow Antarctic habitats: Bionomics, histology, and systematics (Cnidaria: Hexacorallia) Naturalis

In March 2000 and November/December 2001 thirteen specimens of Corallimorphus profundus Moseley, 1877, a conspicuous, anemone-like cnidarian, were hand-sampled by SCUBA diving in 30 to 40 m depth off US Palmer Station, Antarctic Peninsula. Corallimorphus species were formerly recorded only from deep water habitats from where they had been brought up more or less damaged, with most of their epithelia lost or macerated. The present well preserved specimens offer the opportunity to study various aspects of the species’ morphology and biology, particularly as one mature female contained a full cycle of oogenesis besides two batches of brooded developmental stages. In 1949, the late Professor Oskar Carlgren of Lund, Sweden, published a bibliographical survey of the sea anemones of the world, comprising 42 families, 201 genera and 848 species. The survey is an essential starting point for any taxonomic or zoogeographical work on sea anemones. However, the enormous wealth of information that it contains is difficult to extract, because of the lack of adequate indexation. Cnidogenesis in the jewel anemone Corynactis californica (Carlgren, 1936) and C. viridis (Allman, 1846) (Anthozoa: Corallimorpharia) Naturalis

Precursor stages of large holotrichs in the mesenterial filaments of Corynactis californica and C.viridis have been visualised by simple methods using stained whole-mount preparations. Samples were taken from mesenterial filaments emitted during aggressive behaviour (which is reported for the first time in C. viridis). Results suggest that in natural conditions localised stimuli may provoke discharge along short stretches of mesenterial filament, followed by localised recruitment within these depleted areas.
