Bioerosion of the coralline alga Hydrolithon onkodes by microborers in the coral reefs of Moorea, French Polynesia ArchiMer
Tribollet, A; Payri, C.
Calcareous skeletons of the coralline alga Hydrolithon onkodes are colonised by a variety of microboring organisms including euendolithic algae. The species composition of microboring organisms as well as the boring patterns and the boring activity differ between live and dead coralline crusts. The microborers inhabiting the live crusts form an obvious, macroscopically visible green layer in the basal part of the crust, which is in contact with the substratum underneath. Some species, primarily Plectonema terebrans (83 %) and Ostreobium quekettii (7 %) grow from the inside towards the crust's surface and produce a dense network of branched filaments. Following the death of the coralline alga, the skeletons are colonised at the surface and bored inward by...

Trait‐based approach to monitoring marine benthic data along 500 km of coastline ArchiMer
Boyé, Aurelien; Thiébaut, Éric; Grall, Jacques; Legendre, Pierre; Broudin, Caroline; Houbin, Céline; Le Garrec, Vincent; Maguer, Marion; Droual, Gabin; Gauthier, Olivier.
Aim β diversity and its linkages with ecosystem functioning remain poorly documented. This impedes our capacity to predict biodiversity changes and how they affect ecosystem functioning at scales relevant for conservation. Here, we address the functional implications of ongoing seafloor changes by characterizing at regional scale the taxonomic and functional α and β diversities of benthic habitats currently threatened by biotic homogenization. Location Western Europe. Methods Combining a trait‐based approach to benthic community monitoring data covering a 7‐year period and 500 km of coast, we explored the mechanisms governing community assembly in habitats associated with two types of foundation species, intertidal seagrass and subtidal maerl beds,...

A note on the occurrence of the encrusting foraminifera Homotrema rubrum in reef sediments from two distinctive hydrodynamic settings Anais da ABC (AABC)
MACHADO,ALTAIR J.; MORAES,SIMONE S..
Sediment samples from two different reef environments were analyzed for their foraminiferal content: the Sioba/Rio do Fogo reefs, located in a broad shallow shelf dominated by strong currents (Rio Grande do Norte State), and the Praia do Forte reefs, located in a narrow shelf under the influence of wind-induced waves (Bahia State). The recorded foraminiferal fauna, from forty-six samples, is represented by 113 species, being the encrusting species Homotrema rubrum present in nine samples from the Sioba/Rio do Fogo reefs and in 11 samples from Praia do Forte reefs. Homotrema fragments recovered from Sioba/Rio do Fogo are mostly polished with rounded edges (51.59%) and some have a whitish color, whereas the specimens from Praia do Forte reefs are...
