Alcohol and atherosclerosis Anais da ABC (AABC)
DA LUZ,PROTASIO L.; COIMBRA,SILMARA R..
Atherosclerosis is manifested as coronary artery disease (CAD), ischemic stroke and peripheral vascular disease. Moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with reduction of CAD complications. Apparently, red wine offers more benefits than any other kind of drinks, probably due to flavonoids. Alcohol alters lipoproteins and the coagulation system. The flavonoids induce vascular relaxation by mechanisms that are both dependent and independent of nitric oxide, inhibits many of the cellular reactions associated with atherosclerosis and inflammation, such as endothelial expression of vascular adhesion molecules and release of cytokines from polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Hypertension is also influenced by the alcohol intake. Thus, heavy alcohol intake is...

MnSOD and GPx1 polymorphism relationship with coronary heart disease risk and severity Biol. Res.
Souiden,Yosra; Mallouli,Hela; Meskhi,Salah; Chaabouni,Yassine; Rebai,Ahmed; Chéour,Foued; Mahdouani,Kacem.
BACKGROUND: Disturbance of the equilibrium between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and anti-oxidants (AOX) has been implicated in various diseases, including atherosclerosis, the most common pathologic process underlying coronary heart disease (CHD). Thus, the defense systems against ROS are critical protecting blood vessel walls against oxidative damage. In this study, we investigate whether Ala16Val MnSOD and Pro198Leu GPx polymorphisms are associated with CHD susceptibility and/or severity METHODS: Both polymorphisms were genotyped in a sample of 203 controls and 164 patients. CHD risk and severity, antioxidant status (enzymatic and/or non enzymatic) and biochemical parameters were assessed and analysed by genotype RESULTS: A significant association of...

Endothelial function and cardiovascular diseases in HIV infected patient BJID
Andrade,Ana Cristina O.; Cotter,Bruno R..
The HIV epidemic has dramatically changed the paradigm for the development of drug therapy in the last 15 years. The goal is now not only to provide an effective reduction of plasma viremia , but also to reconstitute the immune deficiency due to the progression of the disease. Significant problems with the metabolism of sugars and lipids lead to the appearance of well-documented disorders such as insulin resistance, abnormalities in lipid metabolism and lipodystrophy in those patients on prolonged therapy with antiretrovirals. The question of whether or not HAART-associated lipid disorders contribute to the premature development of coronary artery disease is of major importance for the HIV community. Endothelial injury is associated with disease-related...

Plasma lipid abnormalities in Pakistani population: trends, associated factors, and clinical implications BJMBR
Zaid,M.; Hasnain,S..
Previous studies have reported increased prevalence of coronary heart disease (CHD) in Indians and South Asian settlers in North America. This increased burden of CHD among South Asians is mainly caused by dyslipidemia. To the best of our knowledge, none of the previous works has studied the patterns and prevalence of dyslipidemia in the Pakistani population. The present work aimed to study the plasma lipid trends and abnormalities in a population-based sample of urban and rural Pakistanis. The study included 238 participants (108 males,130 females). Plasma lipid profiles of the participants were determined using standard protocols. We observed that 63% of the study population displayed irregularities in at least one major lipid-fraction including total...

Association between Toll-like receptor 4 Asp299Gly polymorphism and coronary heart disease susceptibility BJMBR
Wu,B.W.; Zhu,J.; Shi,H.M.; Jin,B.; Wen,Z.C..
Published data on the association between Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) Asp299Gly polymorphism and coronary heart disease (CHD) susceptibility are inconclusive. To derive a more precise estimation of the relationship, a meta-analysis was performed. English-language studies were identified by searching PubMed and Embase databases (up to November 2016). All epidemiological studies were regarding Caucasians because no TLR4 Asp/Gly and Gly/Gly genotypes have been detected in Asians. A total of 20 case-control studies involving 14,416 cases and 10,764 controls were included in the meta-analysis. Overall, no significant associations were found between TLR4 Asp299Gly polymorphism and CHD susceptibility in the dominant model (OR=0.89; 95%CI=0.74 to 1.06; P=0.20)...

Lack of a relationship between serum ferritin levels and coronary atherosclerosis evaluated by coronary arteriography BJMBR
Manfroi,W.C.; Zago,A.J.; Cruz,R.; Oliveira,J.; Kirschnick,L.S.; Ordovás,K.; Candiago,R.H.; Souza,J.; Ribeiro,L.W.; Leitão,C.; Brizolara,M.L..
Many clinical and epidemiological studies have demonstrated the relationship between serum ferritin and ischemic heart disease. In the present study we evaluated the relationship between coronary heart disease (CHD) and serum ferritin levels in patients submitted to coronary arteriography. We evaluated 307 patients (210 (68.7%) males; median age: 60 years) who were submitted to coronary angiography, measurement of serum ferritin and identification of clinical events of ischemic heart disease. Serum ferritin is reported as quartiles. Ninety-six patients (31.27%) had normal coronary angiography (group 1) and 211 (68.73%) had coronary heart disease (group 2). Of the patients with CHD, 61 (28.9%) had serum ferritin levels higher than 194 ng/ml (4th quartile),...

Long-term, regular remote ischemic preconditioning improves endothelial function in patients with coronary heart disease BJMBR
Liang,Y.; Li,Y.P.; He,F.; Liu,X.Q.; Zhang,J.Y..
Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPre) can prevent myocardial injury. The purpose of this study was to assess the beneficial effects of long-term regular RIPre on human arteries. Forty patients scheduled for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery were assigned randomly to a RIPre group (n=20) or coronary heart disease (CHD) group (n=20). Twenty patients scheduled for mastectomy were enrolled as a control group. RIPre was achieved by occluding arterial blood flow 5 min with a mercury sphygmomanometer followed by a 5-min reperfusion period, and this was repeated 4 times. The RIPre procedure was repeated 3 times a day for 20 days. In all patients, arterial fragments discarded during surgery were collected to evaluate endothelial function by...

POTENTIAL HEALTHCARE SAVINGS FROM PLANT STEROL ENRICHED FOODS IN CANADA AgEcon
Gyles, Collin; Carlberg, Jared G.; Jones, Peter J.H..
Increased consumption of foods containing plant sterols has the potential to reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) and thus reduce costs associated with treating that disease in a significant way. This paper reports the results of an investigation of the potential monetary benefits of allowing foods enriched with plant sterols to be marketed in Canada. The objective of this research was to estimate the annual savings that would accrue to Canada’s single-payer publicly funded health care system if plant sterols were approved for use. If foods containing plant sterols are consumed at a sufficient rate, a reduction in CHD should follow. This research employs a variation of traditional cost-of-illness analysis entailing four steps: (i)...

Alternative health care using phytotherapy has become increasingly popular due to its positive effects discovered in recent medicinal studies. There are many herb, grain and fruit are used to maintain health and prevent diseases. Grain, in particular germinated brown rice, has been found to contain an active phytochemical such as phytic acid, vitamin E, vitamin C and GABA to treat central nervous system diseases. However, there is no evidence that germinated brown rice is used in coronary heart diseases which remains the major cause of death worldwide. From experimental usage, shows promise as an effective antiatherosclerotic, antihypertensive, antidiabetic as well as having cholesterol-lowering effects. In this study, germinated brown rice has been found...
