Objectives of this work were to determine the sample size (number of plants) to estimate the mean of slender leaf rattlebox (Crotalaria ochroleuca) traits and investigate the relations among traits. In an experimental area of 8 m × 20 m (160 m2), at 147 days after sowing, 110 plants were randomly selected. The following traits were evaluated for each plant: plant height, stem diameter, number of nodes, number of leaves, leaf fresh matter, stem fresh matter, shoot fresh matter, leaf dry matter, stem dry matter and shoot dry matter. Measures of central tendency, variability, skewness and kurtosis were calculated. Normality was verified using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and the sample size was calculated to estimate the mean of the traits, assuming estimation... |

Abstract Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the leading causes of death among men. Genes such as PCA3, PSA, and Fra-1 are suggested to serve as potential tools for the detection of PCa, as they are deregulated during this pathology. A similar event occurs with small non-coding RNAs, called miRNAs, specifically miR-195-5p, miR-133a-3p, and miR-148b-3p, which were analyzed in a Chinese population and suggested to be possible candidates for PCa diagnosis. We evaluated the expression levels of three miRNAs and three genes in tissue samples of PCa and benign prostate disease, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, or prostatitis, in order to determine their potential as candidates for PCa detection. Our results showed a statistically significant overexpression of... |

ABSTRACT The harvest timing of peach palm stems for heart-of-palm production is mainly defined by the height and diameter of the stem. Spear leaf parameters could be used in the field to obtain a higher heart-of-palm yield. The aim of this study is to verify if the length and opening of the spear leaf are related to the peach palm heart production. Three harvests were carried out in Campinas (SP), over a period of one year. Before harvest the plants were measured: main stem circumference, height, number of tillers and leaves, length and degree of spear leaf opening. After stem harvest, heart-of-palm production was evaluated. Regardless of the harvest date, the length of the first-rate heart-of-palm was longer when the spear leaf was open. Total mass... |

ABSTRACT Selection of more productive carrot genotypes is fundamental for crop breeding programs aiming to increase productivity and reduce cost production. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate gains from direct selection and to measure its effects on other agronomic traits of interest in carrots. Thirty six carrot genotypes were evaluated in two experiments: the first, sown in the second half of November 2016 and the second one in the first week of March 2017. The experimental plots covered a useful area of 1.5 m2, in transversal rows and 0.10-m double spacing between single rows x 0.20-m between double rows in a randomized block design with 3 replicates. At 90 days, the incidence of leaf blight was evaluated using a note scale and 100 days after... |

Given the strong effects of behavioural hierarchies on growth in many cultured species and the key role of feed efficiency in aquaculture economics, understanding the nature of the interaction of these variables is important for the sustainability of aquaculture. The relationship between agonistic behaviour, growth and feed efficiency in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was studied by rearing 120 fish in eight aquaria. Fish were video-recorded to estimate the occurrence of agonistic behaviour during a fasting and a refeeding period. Growth, feed intake and feed conversion efficiency (FCE - calculated as the inverse of feed conversion ratio (FCR)) were subsequently measured individually for each fish. Fish showed 58% less agonistic traits during the... |

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of period of the year, year of the birth, sex and age on morphometric indices, such as body capacity, body indices, body side indice, anamorphosis indice, compactness indice and body proportionality indice. The correlation between these characteristics was calculated. Santa Ines sheep offspring from the birth to 12 months-old, at the Estado do Rio de Janeiro were used. Measurements were obtained from animals under an extensive scheme within three years of study totaling 2,601 observations. In this work, the year of birth, sex, animal age and triple interaction between these effects have influenced (P<0.05) morphometric indices. According to body and compactness indices averages also was verified that the... |

This paper focuses on the Barremian/Aptian boundary in the Trans-Caspian area. Results of a stratigraphical study of the uppermost Barremian and the lower Aptian succession in the Trans-Caspian area are presented. The bed-by-bed description of three sections — Keldzhe, Tekedzhik and Utuludzha — is given as well as detailed lithologic columns. Five ammonite zones are known in the studied stratigraphic interval — the Turkmeniceras turkmenicum, Deshayesites tuarkyricus, D. weissi, D. deshayesi, and Dufrenoya furcata zones. These zones are correlated with those of Europe. The Barremian/ Aptian boundary in the Trans-Caspian area should be drawn at the base of the D. tuarkyricus Zone. It corresponds to the layers with the first occurrences of Deshayesites,... |

The Working Group proposes only one modification to its current zonation of the Mediterranean Region, the addition of a cristatum Subzone in the lower part of the inflatum Zone (upper Albian). But in the light of newly published research it highlights levels/areas where further work is required, especially to resolve conflicting zonal schemes. It also proposes a ‘Tethyan Province’ zonation for the middle Albian. Alternative correlations for the Boreal/Tethyan Valanginian to Barremian stages are tabulated, one based on ammonite evidence alone, the other with additional biostratigraphical data coupled with sequence stratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy. |

The microvertebrate assemblages from Ramsåsa sites D and ‘south of church’, Skåne, south Sweden are described for the first time. Analysis of these microvertebrate assemblages from the Öved Sandstone Formation of Skåne indicates a Ludlow rather than Pridoli age. One of two faunas from Ramsåsa site D contained the zonal fossil Thelodus sculptilis and the other T. sculptilis in association with Paralogania ludlowiensis and Thelodus carinatus. The presence of T. carinatus is the youngest record of this species in Laurussia, and indicative of the transitional phase between the Andreolepis hedei and T. sculptilis Zones of the East Baltic Microvertebrate Standard. A fauna with Thelodus parvidens, from south of Ramsåsa church, proved only broadly datable as... |
