ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick.
The Marennes-Oléron Bay on the Atlantic coast is a major oyster culture centre in France. 40 000 tonnes of cupped oysters are produced there each year. The two taxa C. angulata and C. gigas have been cultured in turn over the last century. Since 1950, larvae have been captured between June and September in the southern part of the Bay, near the mouth of the Seudre River, the traditional oyster spat capture zone. This historical database shows that the frequency of larvae capture is defined by three to four peaks in larvae emission in C. angulata and only two peaks for C. gigas during a single season. Seventeen years of data on C. angulata between 1950 and 1969 and 27 years for C. gigas between 1972 and 2000 demonstrate that the beginning of the spawning...

Comps, Michel; Gras, Paul.
A year after the end of the Gill disease which heavily struck the Portuguese oysters Cassostrea angulata Lmk. (Marteil, 1968), a new disease whose causes are still unexplained caused a massive mortality in the same species in the summer of 1970 (Comps, 1972). It can be considered, in 1973, that the successive losses lead to the quasi-extinction of the species C. angulata in the farms of the Marennes basin, since, contrary to what has been done in the case of the Malpèque disease in Canada, the indigenous specious was replaced by another species, the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas Thunberg.

His, Edouard.

Mitochondrial and nuclear DNA phylogeography of Crassostrea angulata, the Portuguese oyster endangered in Europe ArchiMer
Huvet, Arnaud; Lapegue, Sylvie; Magoulas, A; Boudry, Pierre.
The respective status of the Portuguese oyster, Crassostrea angulata, and the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, has long been a matter of controversy. Morphological and physiological similarities, homogeneity of allozyme allelic frequencies between populations of the two taxa and the demonstration of hybridization lead most authors to suggest that they should be regrouped within the same species. The risk of introgression and the present expansion of C. gigas aquaculture in Europe raises the question of the need for preservation of C. angulata in Europe, as only a few populations remain. We studied European and Asian populations of C. gigas and C. angulata using microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA markers to estimate their genetic diversity and...

ArchiMer
His, Edouard.
Portuguese oysters, C. angulata from brood ponds at Arcachon (salinity 27-28ppt) were exposed to lowered salinities and their valve activity continuously recorded. Down to 2 ppt, normal activity was resumed within 24 hours, between 8 and 11%, oysters, survived and adapted slowly, below 8%, oysters died. Sexually mature oysters are more susceptible and may die at 10 to 8% salinity, perhaps because the gonad is full of gametes. Oysters from different localities probably respond differently to changed salinity.

Evidence for natural hybrtidisation between the two oyster sub-species Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea angulata in Southern Europe ArchiMer
Boudry, Pierre; Huvet, Arnaud; Fabioux, Caroline; Lapegue, Sylvie.
Crassostrea angulata and Crassostrea gigas, two cupped oyster taxa of Asian origin (O'Foighil et al, 1998), were successively introduced into Europe during the XVIth and the XXth century respectively (Héral and Grizel, 1991). To date, populations presumed to be C. angulata remain only in the south of Spain and Portugal, while the geographic range of C. gigas is expending, notably due to aquaculture. The two taxa can be distinguished by RFLP analysis of the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxydase I locus (COI). This marker revealed strong genetic differentiation between Asian populations of the two taxa (Boudry et al., 1998). In contrast, nuclear markers showed a much lower genetic differentiation (Huvet et al, in press). The absence of any reproductive barrier...

ArchiMer
Comps, Michel; Duthoit, Jean-louis.
Two viral infections associated to some epizooties have been observed in Crassostrea angulata Lmk. The first one concerns the Gill disease in which the viral damages go hand in hand with a cellular hypertrophy, while, in the second one, the contaminated cells are associated with a deterioration of the connective tissue. These branchial necrosis associated to a virus have been observed again recently in some Portuguese oysters from the natural deposits of the Cadix (Spain) area. Moreover, the study of the summer mortalities (July 1977) in the oyster Crassostrea gigas Th. demonstrated the presence in this species of a virus of the same type as the one associated to the massive mortalities of the Portuguese oyster. In both cases, the viral morphogenesis takes...

Haure, Joel; Huvet, Arnaud; Palvadeau, Hubert; Nourry, Max; Penisson, Christian; Boudry, Pierre; Martin, Jean-louis.
A comparative study of the growth performances in cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea angulata and their hybrids was conducted from March to October 1999 in a controlled farm with phytoplankton (Skeletonema costatum) input. The individuals, of the same age, were from genitors which had been identified through a marker analysis of the mitochondrial genome (Boudry et al, 1998). As a consequence, two pure offspring were obtained through the crossing of Portuguese oyster C. angulata (AA) genitors and the crossing of Japanese oyster C. gigas (GG) genitors. Two other offsprings were produced through the hybrid crossing of C. gigas female genitors with C. angulata (GA) male genitors on one hand, and C. angulata female genitors with C. gigas (AG) male...

Comparative analysis of oxygen consumption rates between cupped oyster spat of Crassostrea gigas of French, Japanese, Spanish and Taiwanese origins ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Wolowicz, Maciej; Latala, Adam; Geairon, Philippe; Huvet, Arnaud; Boudry, Pierre.
Respiration rates of various geographical strains of Crassostrea gigas were compared to assess the respiratory expenditure as a physiological indicator of catabolism (cost of maintenance). Parental oysters, sampled in France (Marennes-Oleron), Japan (Hiroshima), Taiwan (Tunkang) and Spain (Cadix), were differentiated by both their geographic origin and by mitochondrial DNA markers, allowing the distinction between the two closely related taxa Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea angulata. After reproduction of these parental oysters, respiration rates of spat of each strain, reared under common controlled conditions, were individually estimated at 20 degrees C by using a volumetric microrespirometer. Our results demonstrated that physiological variability...

Heral, Maurice; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Prou, Jean.
Recruitment, marketed yield and cultivated biomasses of oysters Crassostrea angulata and Crassostrea gigas are compared to climatic indices for the period 1885-1984. Temperature plays a role up on the date of spawning but explains only partially the failure of recruitment, which has less influence on the marketed yield than on the total biomass Contrary to the sensitivity of wild molluscan stocks to climatic conditions, yield and biomass of these cultivated stocks are not hightly correlated to the annual and seasonal indices of rainfall and air temperature.

Using a satellite DNA family for species identification of commercial oysters ArchiMer
Lopez-flores, I.; De La Herran, R.; Garrido-ramos, M. A.; Boudry, Pierre; Ruiz-rejon, C.; Ruiz-rejon, M..
The cultivation of oyster presents some problems related with the identification and differentiation of species as Ostrea edulis (European flat oyster) with respect to Ostrea stentina (Provence oyster) or Crassostrea angulata (portuguese oyster). Crossostrea gigas (Pacific oyster). We have characterized a satellite DNA family and used it as a molecular marker for genetic differentiation between commercial and non-commercial oyster species present in Europe. This marker clearly supports a high degree of differentiation between O. edulis and O. stentina and conversely upholds the contention that C. gigas and C. angulata are the same species.

His, Edouard.
