Can the CAP payments facilitate the growth of individual farms in the NMS post-EU accession? AgEcon
Latruffe, Laure; Davidova, Sophia; Douarin, Elodie; Gorton, Matthew.
The impact of the introduction of the EU Single Area Payments (SAP) on farm strategy is investigated for a sample of Lithuanian farms, utilising farm accounting and survey data. The applications of two investment models demonstrate that the credit market in Lithuania was imperfect prior to accession and that some farms were financially constrained. The introduction of the SAP has a significant, positive influence on farmers’ intentions to expand their farm area compared to a baseline scenario of the continuation of pre-accession policy. The switch in policy has a more pronounced effect on farms that were previously credit constrained. While the SAP has been presented as a policy support that is decoupled from production, its introduction will nevertheless...

Financing Smallholder Agricultural Production in Kenya: An Analysis of Effective Demand for Credit AgEcon
Nyikal, Rose Adhiambo.
Financing smallholder farming has been one of the major concerns of Kenya’s development efforts. Many credit programs have evolved over the years but with dismal performance. In a study that sought to find the best way to fund smallholder agriculture, it became necessary to analyze and document smallholders’ effective demand for credit. Of particular interest was the comparison of the existing production plans and production plans under strictly profit maximization. Linear programming model was used to formalize observed plans and determine those under profit maximization. Both the activities and the values of outputs under different objectives were compared. Farm Investment Analysis was undertaken to determine the suitability of funding farm activities...

Governance Control Mechanisms in Portuguese Agricultural Credit Cooperatives AgEcon
Cabo, Paula; Rebelo, Joao.
Over the last decade Portuguese Agricultural Credit Cooperatives (ACCs) have increasingly face survival challenges related to their difficulty in gathering equity. The main source of ACCs equity is the net benefit; thus, understanding how ACCs governance can work on correcting bad economic performance is of crucial importance to overcome this constraint. The main objective of this paper is to describe the governance control mechanisms in the ACCs. Five governance mechanisms are identified: board and chairman change (internal mechanisms), central ACC intervention by an agent or by management board replacement and merger. Empirical analysis proved that the internal governance mechanisms activity is not related to the ACC performance. Additionally: (a) ACCs...

AGRIBUSINESS TRADE CREDIT -- A PARADOX AgEcon
Gustafson, Cole R..
This article utilizes the Survey of Small Business Finances to compare and contrast trade credit practices of rural small business firms. The results show that these firms borrow money and then re-lend it to others in the form of trade credit. There is a strong direct relationship between various forms of debt held by these firms and their level of accounts receivable (e.g., trade credit extended to customers). The actual level of re-lending varied among firms depending on their adoption level of computers that are used for cash management and credit services. Accounts receivable balances were also dependent on sales levels, costs of doing business, and other income. The most important source of funds for re-lending was obtained from mortgages and...

Risk Preferences and Demand for Insurance in Peru: A Field Experiment AgEcon
Galarza, Francisco B.; Carter, Michael R..
This paper reports the results of behavioral economic experiments conducted in Peru to examine the relationship amongst risk preferences, loan take-up, and insurance purchase decisions. This area-based yield insurance can help reduce people's vulnerability to large scale covariate shocks, and can also lower the loan default probability under extreme negative covariate shocks. In a context of collateralized formal credit markets, we provide suggestive evidence that insurance may help reduce the fear of losing collateral that prevents potential borrowers from taking loans. Framing these experiments to recreate a real life situation, we started with a Baseline Game where subjects had to choose between a fallback production project and an uninsured loan. We...

STIMULATING GROWTH AND MINIMIZING RISK IN AGRICULTURAL LENDING UNDER THE AGRICULTURAL CREDIT GUARANTEE SCHEME FUND (ACGSF) IN BAUCHI STATE, NIGERIA AgEcon
Nasiru, M.; Jibril, S.A.; Sani, R.M.; Sabo, A.M..
This study examined the impact of ACGSF in stimulating growth and minimizing of risk in Agricultural lending in Bauchi State. Forty three (43) farmers were randomly sampled and data collected through the use of structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation and multiple regression analysis. The results showed that farmers farm size increased considerably (P>0. 001) after taking the loan and the farm in come also increased (P<0. 001) after taking the loan for an average of two seasons. The results also showed that the educational level of the farmers does not affect loan amount directly even though there is strong positive correlation between the level of farmers’ education and their ability to meaningfully...

Determinants of Repayment Performance in Credit Groups: The Role of Program Design, Intra-group Risk Pooling, and Social Cohesion in Madagascar AgEcon
Zeller, Manfred.
Group lending has received much attention in recent years because of its perceived potential in providing financial services to poor households that lack traditional collateral. The analysis in this paper focuses on the effects of program design, community and group characteristics on the repayment performance of groups, using a data set on groups from six different lending programs in Madagascar. The results show that socially cohesive groups pool risks by diversifying the members’ asset portfolio so that their repayment performance is improved even in communities with high-risk exposure.

Development in the Midst of Drought: Evaluating an Agricultural Extension and Credit Program in Nicaragua. AgEcon
Mullally, Conner.
Abstract: This essay is an evaluation of year one of the Rural Business Development (RBD) program for small rice farmers in León, Nicaragua. The RBD program is administered by the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and is designed to deliver agricultural extension advice and affordable credit in the form of inputs to farm households. This essay estimates the average impact of the program on rice yields and revenues utilizing inverse propensity score weighting combined with linear regression. In conducting statistical inference, it also accounts for the fact that agricultural outcomes are likely correlated over space in a small area such as the one studied here. The results suggest that the program had no impact on average, likely due to the presence of a...

The Role of Credit Access in Improving Cocoa Production in West African Countries AgEcon
Nyemeck, J.B.; Gockowski, James; Nkamleu, Guy Blaise.
This study uses survey data to examine the role of access to credit on cocoa production, in West African cocoa production countries under conditions of agricultural policy liberalization. The study specifies and estimates econometric models to simulate the counterfactual of what cocoa production would be in the absence of credit facilities. The survey results show that about 54% of cocoa farmers have access to credit in Nigeria, and respectively 37% in Cameroon, while in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire only a few cocoa farmers have access to credit. We find that the cocoa farmer’s capacity such as, the cocoa farm size, and the mutuality status of the farmer are more important as a determinants of cocoa farmers access to credit as well as another set of variables...

Determinantes de desmatamento em pólos de produção agropecuária no estado do Acre, Amazônia Brasileira AgEcon
Santos, Jair Carvalho Dos; Braga, Marcelo Jose; Homma, Alfredo Kingo Oyama.

Going Digital: Computerized Land Registration and Credit Access in India AgEcon
Deininger, Klaus W.; Goyal, Aparajita.
Despite strong beliefs that property titling and registration will enhance credit access, empirical evidence in support of such effects remains scant. The gradual roll-out of computerization of land registry systems across Andhra Pradesh’s 387 sub-registry offices (SROs) allows us to combine quarterly administrative data on credit disbursed by all commercial banks for a 11 year period (1997-2007) aggregated to the SRO level with the date of shifting registration from manual to digital. Computerization had no credit effect in rural areas but led to increased credit-supply in urban ones. A marked increase of registered urban mortgages due to computerization supports the robustness of the result. At the same time, estimated impacts from reduction of stamp...
