Comparison of chili pepper breeding populations for agronomic traits and polygenic resistance to Phytophthora blight Horticultura Brasileira
Arpaci,Bekir Bülent; Karataş,Kerim.
ABSTRACT Belonging to the Oomycete class, Phytophthora capsici has wide range of host profile and is responsible for many devastating diseases in many countries. In addition to time consuming problem for transferring resistance to susceptible varieties, backcrossing method causes losing of genes providing resistance to susceptible varieties. In this study transferring P. capsici resistance genes to susceptible chili pepper lines was aimed during the extensive breeding period and resistant lines were confirmed by marker assistance. Two different breeding populations from CM334 and PM217 were compared by stem inoculation test to determine receptivity, inducibility, and stability resistance component. CM334 was found more effective for transferring all...

Next-generation phenotyping in plants: old problems, new promises JBAG
Breccia,G; Nestares,G.
Current progress in DNA sequencing technology has enabled to gather a large amount of genomic information. Genotyping has become a routine activity with lower costs as new technology emerges. However, genomic information cannot provide much insight into how a given genotype performs. In fact, improvement in understanding phenotypes and the ability to generate good phenotypic data became essential for better utilization of genotypic data and understanding the effect of environment. In this post-genomic era, phenomics emerge as a new discipline that aims the acquisition of high-throughput phenotypic information at all levels of biological organization integrating different “omics” data. New technology in plant phenotyping comprises a wide...

Research Investments and Market Structure in the Food Processing, Agricultural Input, and Biofuel Industries Worldwide AgEcon
Fuglie, Keith O.; Heisey, Paul W.; King, John L.; Day-Rubenstein, Kelly A.; Schimmelpfennig, David E.; Wang, Sun Ling.
Meeting growing global demand for food, fiber, and biofuel requires robust investment in agricultural research and development (R&D) from both public and private sectors. This study examines global R&D spending by private industry in seven agricultural input sectors, food manufacturing, and biofuel and describes the changing structure of these industries. In 2007 (the latest year for which comprehensive estimates are available), the private sector spent $19.7 billion on food and agricultural research (56 percent in food manufacturing and 44 percent in agricultural input sectors) and accounted for about half of total public and private spending on food and agricultural R&D in high-income countries. In R&D related to biofuel, annual...

Statistical model assumptions achieved by linear models: classics and generalized mixed Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Melo,Rita Carolina de; Trevisani,Nicole; Santos,Marcio dos; Guidolin,Altamir Frederico; Coimbra,Jefferson Luís Meirelles.
ABSTRACT When an agricultural experiment is completed and the data about the response variable is available, it is necessary to perform an analysis of variance. However, the hypothesis testing of this analysis shows validity only if the assumptions of the statistical model are ensured. When such assumptions are violated, procedures must be applied to remedy the problem. The present study aimed to compare and investigate how the assumptions of the statistical model can be achieved by classical linear model and generalized linear mixed model, as well as their impact on the hypothesis test of the analysis of variance. The data used in this study was obtained from a genetic breeding program on the cooking time of segregating populations. The following...

Fuzzy logic in automation for interpretation of adaptability and stability in plant breeding studies Scientia Agricola
Carneiro,Anna Regina Tiago; Sanglard,Demerson Arruda; Azevedo,Alcinei Mistico; Souza,Thiago Lívio Pessoa Oliveira de; Pereira,Helton Santos; Melo,Leonardo Cunha.
ABSTRACT: The methods of Annicchiarico (1992) and Cruz et al. (1989) are widely used in phenotypic adaptability and stability analyses in plant breeding. In spite of the importance of these methodologies, their parameters are difficult to interpret. The aim of this research was to develop fuzzy controllers to automate the decision-making process employed by adaptability and stability studies following the methods adopted by Annicchiarico (1992) and Cruz et al. (1989) and check their efficiency using experimental data from common bean cultivars. Fuzzy controllers have been developed based on the Mamdani inference system proposed by these two methods of adaptability and stability studies. For the first fuzzy controller parameters were considered favorable...

Reaction of sources of resistance to white mold to microsatellite haplotypes of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum Scientia Agricola
Lehner,Miller da Silva; Paula Júnior,Trazilbo José de; Vieira,Rogério Faria; Lima,Renan Cardoso; Soares,Bruno de Almeida; Silva,Rhaphael Alves.
ABSTRACT White mold caused by the fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is the most yield-limiting disease of common bean in Brazil. To date, there has been no commercial cultivar resistant to this disease. In a greenhouse we evaluated white mold resistance sources (Cornell 605, A195 and G122) against eight isolates of S. sclerotiorum from five Brazilian states. A Brazilian cultivar (BRSMG Madrepérola) and a susceptible check (Beryl) were used as control. Treatments were arranged in factorial combinations (5 × 8) in a completely random design with four replicates. Disease severity was assessed on a rating scale of 1-to-9 together with lesion length, which was used to determine an area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC). Polymorphisms detected in ten...

Nanotechnologies associated to floral resources in agri-food sector Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Ammar,Ahmad S.
Abstract Nanotechnology advent in agri-food sector is set to prompt next revolution in agricultural engineering. However, there is a perpetually rising need for development of new nanotechnologies that could synchronically work with various agrochemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and growth promoters to potentially increase farmlands efficiency, preserve agro-ecosystems, and diminish the negative health risks imposed by conventional practices. In nanotechnology, smart delivery systems that utilize either nanoscale carriers such as clay nanotubes and carbon nanotubes or nanoparticles such as mesoporous silica nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles, could enable not only the accurate and targeted delivery of functional ingredients but also...

Importance of agronomic traits in the individual selection process in sugarcane determined using the logistic regression Agronomy
Brasileiro, Bruno Portela; Peternelli, Luiz Alexandre; Silveira, Luís Cláudio Inácio; Barbosa, Márcio Henrique Pereira.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the relative importance of agronomic traits during the individual selection in sugarcane (Saccharum spp.), as well as evaluate the potential for using logistic regression and decision trees in identifying the best genotypes. A total of 7,719 seedlings of 128 half-sib families were evaluated in the first test phase (T1) and 659 clones were selected for the second (T2). Logistic regression was applied in both populations (T1 and T2). The number of stalks, bud prominence and length of the internode were the most important traits in selection the T1. Plant vigour, stalk diameter and stalk height were the most important traits in selection the T2. There were 174 individuals selected by the mass selection method in T1 and...

Population parameters and selection of kale genotypes using Bayesian inference in a multi-trait linear model Agronomy
Azevedo, Alcinei Mistico; Andrade júnior, Valter Carvalho de; Santos, Albertir Aparecido dos; Sousa Júnior, Aderbal Soares de; Oliveira, Altino Júnior Mendes; Ferreira, Marcos Aurélio Miranda.
Variance components must be obtained to estimate genetic parameters and predict breeding values. This information can be obtained through Bayesian inference. When multiple traits are evaluated, Bayesian inference can be used in multi-trait models. The objective of this study was to obtain estimates of genetic parameters, gains with selection, and genetic correlations among traits. Likewise, we aim to predict the genetic values and select the best kale genotypes using the Bayesian approach in a multi-trait linear model. The following traits were evaluated: stem diameter, plant height, number of shoots, number of marketable leaves and fresh weight of leaves using Bayesian inference in 22 kale genotypes. The experiment consisted of a randomized block design...

Genetic correlation and path analysis of common bean collected from Caceres Mato Grosso State, Brazil Ciência Rural
Gonçalves,Danilo de Lima; Barelli,Marco Antonio Aparecido; Oliveira,Taniele Carvalho de; Santos,Paulo Ricardo Junges dos; Silva,Claudete Rosa da; Poletine,Juliana Parisotto; Neves,Leonarda Grillo.
ABSTRACT: The aim of the study was to determine genetic correlations of agronomic traits and to evaluate direct and indirect effects, through path analysis, between variables analyzed with grain yield. Forty accessions of common bean, cultivated at Caceres County were evaluated, by using randomized complete blocks design with three repetitions. Coefficient magnitudes of genotypic correlations were superior to phenotypic and environmental ones for most correlations, suggesting greater influence of genetic factor than environmental factors. In order to determine the importance of direct and indirect effects, path analysis was performed, which provided greater reliability in interpretations of cause and effect between studied traits, indicating that grain...
