Resistance to ACCase inhibitors in Eleusine indica from Brazil involves a target site mutation Planta Daninha
Osuna,M.D.; Goulart,I.C.G.R.; Vidal,R.A.; Kalsing,A.; Ruiz Santaella,J.P.; De Prado,R..
Eleusine indica (goosegrass) is a diploid grass weed which has developed resistance to ACCase inhibitors during the last ten years due to the intensive and frequent use of sethoxydim to control grass weeds in soybean crops in Brazil. Plant dose-response assays confirmed the resistant behaviour of one biotype obtaining high resistance factor values: 143 (fenoxaprop), 126 (haloxyfop), 84 (sethoxydim) to 58 (fluazifop). ACCase in vitro assays indicated a target site resistance as the main cause of reduced susceptibility to ACCase inhibitors. PCR-generated fragments of the ACCase CT domain of the resistant and sensitive reference biotype were sequenced and compared. A point mutation was detected within the triplet of aspartate at the amino acid position 2078...

Galium spurium and G. aparine Resistance to ALS-Inhibiting Herbicides in Northern Greece Planta Daninha
PAPAPANAGIOTOU,A.P.; DAMALAS,C.A.; BOSMALI,I.; MADESIS,P.; MENEXES,G.C.; ELEFTHEROHORINOS,I.G..
ABSTRACT: Knowledge of the level of resistance of weed populations and the herbicides to which they survive is important for recommending suitable advice to farmers and allowing the selection of appropriate management strategies. Whole-plant dose response experiments were carried out to assess the resistance status of eight putative resistant Galium spurium L. populations and one G. aparine L. population, originating from northern Greece. High levels of resistance of both species to the ALS-inhibiting herbicides chlorsulfuron and tribenuron were found, while their susceptible populations were controlled. Three G. spurium (GS) populations showed additional cross-resistance to [florasulam + 2,4-D], whereas the remaining five resistant GS populations were...

Resistance of Amaranthus retroflexus to acetolactate synthase inhibitor herbicides in Brazil Planta Daninha
Francischini,A.C.; Constantin,J.; Oliveira Jr.,R.S.; Santos,G.; Franchini,L.H.M.; Biffe,D.F..
When in competition with cotton, Amaranthus retroflexus can cause high yield losses. Due to the limited availability of selective herbicides registered for post emergence control of this weed, the same herbicides have been used repeated times over the last few years, which may have selected resistant biotypes. Biotypes of A. retroflexus collected from the main areas of cotton cultivation in Brazil were submitted to dose-response trials, by applying the herbicides trifloxysulfuron-sodium and pyrithiobac-sodium in doses equivalent to 0, ¼, ½, 1, 2 and 4 times the recommended rates. Resistance to ALS inhibitors was confirmed in biotypes of A. retroflexus. Biotype MS 2 from Mato Grosso do Sul, was cross-resistant to both trifloxysulfuron-sodium and...

Resistence of Euphorbia Heterophylla L. to ALS-inhibiting herbicides in soybean Scientia Agricola
Gelmini,Gerson Augusto; Victória Filho,Ricardo; Novo,Maria do Carmo de Salvo Soares; Adoryan,Márcio Luiz.
Herbicides are widely used in soybean for weed control, and the selection pressure attributed to the repeated use of herbicides with similar modes of action on the same site has caused selection for resistant biotypes within and among previously susceptible species, such as Euphorbia heterophylla L., in relation to ALS enzyme inhibitors, in the states of Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, and São Paulo, Brazil. Seeds of E. heterophylla were collected to examine possible new cases of resistant populations and to test alternative herbicide treatments to manage these populations, in the Caarapó region, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, in areas where plants of this species have survived continuous herbicide applications. The experiment was carried out under...

Is the emergence of fungal resistance to medical triazoles related to their use in the agroecosystems? A mini review BJM
Ribas e Ribas,Aícha Daniela; Spolti,Pierri; Del Ponte,Emerson Medeiros; Donato,Katarzyna Zawada; Schrekker,Henri; Fuentefria,Alexandre Meneghello.
Abstract Triazole fungicides are used broadly for the control of infectious diseases of both humans and plants. The surge in resistance to triazoles among pathogenic populations is an emergent issue both in agriculture and medicine. The non-rational use of fungicides with site-specific modes of action, such as the triazoles, may increase the risk of antifungal resistance development. In the medical field, the surge of resistant fungal isolates has been related to the intensive and recurrent therapeutic use of a limited number of triazoles for the treatment and prophylaxis of many mycoses. Similarities in the mode of action of triazole fungicides used in these two fields may lead to cross-resistance, thus expanding the spectrum of resistance to multiple...

Multidrug-resistant Candida glabrata strains obtained by induction of anidulafungin resistance in planktonic and biofilm cells BJPS
Hatwig,Camila; Balbueno,Eduardo A.; Bergamo,Vanessa Z.; Pippi,Bruna; Fuentefria,Alexandre M.; Silveira,Gustavo P..
Candida glabrata has emerged as a common cause of serious life-threatening fungal infections, largely owing to their low susceptibility to azole antifungals. Recent guidance indicates the use of echinocandins as the first-choice drug for the treatment of systemic infections of C. glabrata; however, C. glabrata resistance to echinocandins is reportedly increasing. Herein, we present the induction of anidulafungin resistance in planktonic and sessile cells of C. glabrata and the development of fluconazole cross-resistance. MICs of 21 clinical C. glabrata strains were determined by a broth microdilution method using anidulafungin and fluconazole. Biofilm formation on a tracheal catheter was determined using 1- × 1-cm2 polyvinyl polychloride catheter...

Acid and low temperature treatments on Salmonella Enteritidis inoculated in pork and its subsequent survival in simulated gastric fluid Ciência Rural
Silva,Simone Quintão; Santos,Miriam Teresinha dos; Paes,Simone Albino; Vanetti,Maria Cristina Dantas.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the acid resistance of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) in stored pork and in simulated gastric fluid (SGF). A culture of S. Enteritidis was subjected to acid treatment prior to inoculation into pork, stored under refrigeration at frozen temperatures and exposed to SGF. The S. Enteritidis CCS3 and ATCC 13076 strains previously subjected to acid treatment (at pH 4.0-5.0) were inoculated in pork and stored at 4°C and -18°C. Storage at 4ºC did not affect the populations of both S. Enteritidis strains. After 84 days at -18°C, the mean population of both CCS3 and ATCC strains were reduced by 0.8 and 1.5 log cycles, respectively. Prior acid treatment did not enhance the survival of...
