KDH13 is a sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L. ssp vulgaris) doubled haploid line (PI 663862) released as a genetic stock by USDA-ARS in cooperation with the Beet Sugar Development Foundation, Denver, CO. KDH13 is resistant to beet curly top (BCT) caused by Beet curly top virus which is transmitted by the beet leafhopper (Circulifer tenellus Baker). KDH13 was extracted from the BCT resistant C762-17 (PI 560130) parental line that segregates for BCT resistance and genetic male sterility. Intensive phenotypic screening was used for selecting plants from C762-17 that showed no symptoms under fully controlled infection conditions in the greenhouse. Curly top caused by Beet curly top virus is a widespread disease problem vectored by the beet leafhopper in semiarid sugar beet production areas. Host resistance is the primary defense against this problem, but resistance in commercial cultivars is only low to intermediate. In order to identify novel sources of curly top resistance, 14 sugar beet lines were screened in a disease nursery in 2015. The lines were arranged in a randomized complete block design with six replications. A curly top epiphytotic was created by releasing six viruliferous beet leafhoppers per plant at the four-to six-leaf growth stage on 24 Jun. Curly top of sugarbeets caused by Beet curly top virus (BCTV) was widespread from southeastern Oregon to southcentral Idaho in 2004. Curly top first became a serious threat to sugarbeet production in southern Idaho in 1919. By the time the first resistant variety was released in 1935, BCTV had almost eliminated the sugarbeet industry (2). Today this disease is largely managed through the use of resistant varieties. Early planting and the use of systemic insecticides (phorate, aldicarb, and imidicloprid) will also help limit curly top (1,2,4). |

Twenty-five experimental sugarbeet hybrids submitted to the official variety trials were evaluated for resistance to Beet curly top virus (BCTV). Hybrids were planted in a commercial sprinkler-irrigated sugarbeet field and exposed to a natural epiphytotic of BCTV. Experimental units were arranged in a randomized complete block design with seven replications. Plots were evaluated for BCTV based on a Disease Index (DI) scale of 0 to 9 (no symptoms to dead) on Sept 14, 2004 by three raters. Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) varieties were evaluated for disease resistance to curly top to establish if disease ratings made in inoculated nurseries correlated with disease ratings and yield in sugar beet crops exposed to natural disease outbreaks. Cultivars were planted both in inoculated curly top nurseries in Kimberly, ID, and in commercial cultivar trials in irrigated fields near Ontario, OR and Nampa, ID. It is vital in genetics research to develop uniform breeding lines and genetic stocks to study inheritance, gene transfer (through conventional hybridization), and molecular genetics research.
