The identification of the mechanisms by which marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) is produced and regenerated is critical to develop robust prediction of ocean carbon cycling. Polysaccharides represent one of the main constituents of marine DOM and their degradation is mainly attributed to polysaccharidases derived from bacteria. Here, we report that marine viruses can depolymerize the exopolysaccharides (EPS) excreted by their hosts using 5 bacteriophages that infect the notable EPS producer, Cobetia marina DSMZ 4741. The maritime fisheries and mariculture guidance law passed in 1997 specifies that with the perspective of renegotiation of the common fisheries policy in 2002, a report on the special conditions of inshore fisheries be drawn up by the Government. Microalgae, which are the foundation of aquatic food webs, may be the indirect target of herbicides used for agricultural and urban applications. Dissolved organic matter in the form of riverine humic substances stimulated the growth of both axenic nitrogen-limited Alexandrium catenella cultures and nitrogen-limited cultures with a marine bacterial community present. The biomass increase of A. catenella could not be accounted for by utilization of inorganic nitrogen compounds. However, there was a considerable release of dissolved free and combined amino acids from the humic substances that was utilized by A. catenella. About 40% of the nitrogen used by A. catenella in the axenic treatment with humic substances added was taken up as organic nitrogen. The use of riverine dissolved organic matter by the heterotrophic bacteria associated with a culture of the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa and release of simple nitrogen compounds were studied in an experimental series. Bacteria reduced the bulk of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) by half, but when associated with M. aeruginosa, DON was excreted and its concentration rose by 13%. During the stationary growth phase bacteria released ammonium, doubling the concentration of ammonia as well as of nitrates. Bacteria associated with M. aeruginosa consumed riverine DON and joined the ammonification and nitrification process, supplying cyanobacteria with simple nitrogen compounds. |
