In peripartum dairy cows, insulin resistance (IR) increases to adjust the direction of energy to lactation after calving. To investigate the effect of prepartum IR on postpartum reproductive performance, the insulin tolerance test (ITT) was applied to 15 cows at 3 weeks (Pre21) and 10 days (Pre10) before the predicted calving date. Blood glucose area under the curve (AUCglu) within 120 min after administration of 0.05 IU/kg-BW insulin was calculated. The occurrence of first ovulation, days to first artificial insemination (AI) and first AI conception rate were recorded. Nutritional status postpartum was evaluated by blood chemical analysis. Based on AUCglu changes from Pre21 to Pre10, cows were classified into either the AUC-up group (AUCglu increase, n=5)...

The Possibility of a Green Revolution in Sub-Saharan Africa: Evidence from Kenya AgEcon
Otsuka, Keijiro; Yamano, Takashi.
It is widely believed that a Green Revolution similar to the one achieved in Asia is impossible in Sub-Saharan Africa. Although grain yields have been stagnant in this region, there are some signs of the intensification of farming systems in the face of growing population pressure on limited land resources. In this paper we focus on the new farming system based on the use of manure produced by dairy cows, which may be termed an “Organic Green Revolution.” Using the farm household data collected from Kenya, this paper demonstrates that the Organic Green Revolution has a potential of doubling maize yields in highlands of Kenya.

Economic Evaluation of Irrigated Dairy Forage Production. AgEcon
Gaffy, Joe; Gyles, Oliver.
An optimisation model was developed to compare the profitability of different forage species on irrigated dairy farms. The model is driven by the energy and protein requirements of the milking cow. The objective of the model is to maximise income, after herd and feed costs, by selecting the area of the farm sown to particular forage species. Different forage species may require different animal production systems to optimise their profitability. In order to achieve this, the model can alter the herd size and structure, level of production, concentrate feeding regime and forage conservation and feeding on a monthly basis.

MIÉRT NEM LEGELTETIK A TEJELŐ TEHENEKET? AgEcon
Salamon, Ildiko; Meszaros, Judit; Nemeth, Attila; Tell, Imre.
A magyar gyepgazdálkodás fejlesztése – a nyugat-európai színvonaltól elmara-dó részaránya és minősége következtében is – fontos feladat lenne, de a gazdál-kodók a tejelőállomány legelőre (is) alapozott takarmányozásában, a legeltetés gyakorlatának visszaállításában nem látnak jövőt. Legeltetést – a tejelő állomá-nyoknál – szinte csak a növendékek esetében alkalmaznak, jóllehet a gazdálkodók döntő hányada csatlakozott az egységes területalapú támogatás igénybevétele mellett valamelyik, a gyepterületeket, illetve gyephasználatot érintő célprog-ramhoz is. Véleményünk szerint a megoldást segítheti a magyar tarka fajta fel-karolása, illetve a húsmarhatartás. Tejelő tehenek legeltetésére a jó legelőkkel rendelkező, 20-30 tehenet tartó gazdaságok gondolhatnak....

CONFINED ANIMAL PRODUCTION AND MANURE NUTRIENTS AgEcon
Gollehon, Noel R.; Caswell, Margriet; Ribaudo, Marc; Kellogg, Robert L.; Lander, Charles; Letson, David.
Census of agriculture data were used to estimate manure nutrient production and the capacity of cropland and pastureland to assimilate nutrients. Most farms (78 percent for nitrogen and 69 percent for phosphorus) have adequate land on which it is physically feasible to apply the manure produced onfarm at agronomic rates. (The costs of applying manure at these rates have not been assessed). Even so, manure that is produced on operations that cannot fully apply it to their own land at agronomic rates accounts for 60 percent of the Nation's manure nitrogen and 70 percent of the manure phosphorus. In these cases, most counties with farms that produce "excess" nutrients have adequate crop acres not associated with animal operations, but within the county, on...

Variation in available shaded area changes behaviour parameters in grazing dairy cows during the warm season R. Bras. Zootec.
Stivanin,Sheila Cristina Bosco; Werncke,Daíse; Vizzotto,Elissa Forgiarini; Stumpf,Marcelo Tempel; Thaler Neto,André; Fischer,Vivian.
ABSTRACT The objective was to investigate the effects of available shaded area on behavioural characteristics of lactating cows during the warm season in the subtropics. Twelve Holstein cows were divided into groups, with 2 (SH2) or 10 m2 (SH10) of available shade per cow (six cows per treatment). The behaviour was recorded when animals were grazing from 09.00 to 16.00 h (GMT −02.00 h) throughout the trial. Data considered in the statistical analysis were restricted to the five days when the maximum temperature was ≥ 25 °C. Cows in the SH10 group had lower panting score, but higher proportions of time in shade and lying down and stayed more time per visit in the shaded area than cows in the SH2 group. Cows in the SH10 group had less events of competition...

Feet lesions and lameness prevalence in dairy cows kept in permanent confinement (free-stall and tie-stall) MV&Z
Nicoletti, José Luiz de Mello; Souza, Francisco Armando de Azevedo; Thomassian, Armen; Hussni, Carlos Alberto; Alves, Ana Liz Garcia.
Feet lesions and lameness prevalence were studied in Holstein dairy cows housed in free-stall and tie-stall systems in São Paulo state farms. In the free-stall system, digital dermatitis, flat sole and axial erosion were the prevailing lesions. However, in the tie-stall system the following lesions predominated: sole bleeding, white line disease, heel erosion, double sole, interdigital dermatitis, hoof cracks and long toellow heel. In both management systems a positive correlation was found between feet lesions and the number of parturitions. The cows' age and the number of parturitions in addition to the management system influenced feet lesions in dairy cows..

Simulation model for particle dynamics in rumen of cattle fed sugarcane diet Scientia Agricola
Collao-Saenz,Edgar Alain; Dijkstra,Jan; Paiva,Paulo César de Aguiar; Bannink,André; Arcuri,Pedro Braga; Teixeira,Júlio César; Olalquiaga Pérez,Juan Ramón; David,Flávia Maria.
Animal simulation models are sets of equations used to describe biological processes. A non-steady state simulation model of cattle digestion is presented in order to represent nutrient availability as a response to feed intake pattern and the kinetics of particle size reduction. Variables representing the particle size reduction and discontinuous voluntary feed intake were included in a mechanistic model created to optimize the supplementation of sugarcane based diets. In general the predicted values were very close to observed values for fibre and nitrogen flows. The model has not shown consistent bias in relation to the behavior of the observed data of duodenal flow of neutral detergent fiber and non-ammonia nitrogen. Milk production simulations were...
