In peripartum dairy cows, insulin resistance (IR) increases to adjust the direction of energy to lactation after calving. To investigate the effect of prepartum IR on postpartum reproductive performance, the insulin tolerance test (ITT) was applied to 15 cows at 3 weeks (Pre21) and 10 days (Pre10) before the predicted calving date. Blood glucose area under the curve (AUCglu) within 120 min after administration of 0.05 IU/kg-BW insulin was calculated. The occurrence of first ovulation, days to first artificial insemination (AI) and first AI conception rate were recorded. Nutritional status postpartum was evaluated by blood chemical analysis. Based on AUCglu changes from Pre21 to Pre10, cows were classified into either the AUC-up group (AUCglu increase, n=5)... |

An optimisation model was developed to compare the profitability of different forage species on irrigated dairy farms. The model is driven by the energy and protein requirements of the milking cow. The objective of the model is to maximise income, after herd and feed costs, by selecting the area of the farm sown to particular forage species. Different forage species may require different animal production systems to optimise their profitability. In order to achieve this, the model can alter the herd size and structure, level of production, concentrate feeding regime and forage conservation and feeding on a monthly basis. |

A magyar gyepgazdálkodás fejlesztése – a nyugat-európai színvonaltól elmara-dó részaránya és minősége következtében is – fontos feladat lenne, de a gazdál-kodók a tejelőállomány legelőre (is) alapozott takarmányozásában, a legeltetés gyakorlatának visszaállításában nem látnak jövőt. Legeltetést – a tejelő állomá-nyoknál – szinte csak a növendékek esetében alkalmaznak, jóllehet a gazdálkodók döntő hányada csatlakozott az egységes területalapú támogatás igénybevétele mellett valamelyik, a gyepterületeket, illetve gyephasználatot érintő célprog-ramhoz is. Véleményünk szerint a megoldást segítheti a magyar tarka fajta fel-karolása, illetve a húsmarhatartás. Tejelő tehenek legeltetésére a jó legelőkkel rendelkező, 20-30 tehenet tartó gazdaságok gondolhatnak.... |

Census of agriculture data were used to estimate manure nutrient production and the capacity of cropland and pastureland to assimilate nutrients. Most farms (78 percent for nitrogen and 69 percent for phosphorus) have adequate land on which it is physically feasible to apply the manure produced onfarm at agronomic rates. (The costs of applying manure at these rates have not been assessed). Even so, manure that is produced on operations that cannot fully apply it to their own land at agronomic rates accounts for 60 percent of the Nation's manure nitrogen and 70 percent of the manure phosphorus. In these cases, most counties with farms that produce "excess" nutrients have adequate crop acres not associated with animal operations, but within the county, on... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the replacement of soybean meal by cottonseed meal in the diet of dairy cows fed diets based on spineless cactus. Five Girolando lactating cows were used, with average live weight of 490 kg and average production of 11.5 kg of milk/day, distributed in a 5 × 5 Latin square design (5 animals, 5 treatments and 5 experimental periods). Each experimental period lasted 15 days, 10 days being for the adaptation of the animals to the diet and 5 days for data collection. The experimental diet consisted of spineless cactus (53%), sorghum silage (32%) and concentrate (15%). The cottonseed meal replaced 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of soybean meal in the concentrate. The intake, milk yield and composition were evaluated. The... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different sources of lipids in the diets of dairy cows on the intake and digestibility of nutritional fractions, and milk production and composition. The experiment was conducted in a 42-hectare area divided into eight paddocks covered with Brachiaria brizantha. Twelve crossbred Holstein × Zebu cows were distributed into three simultaneous 4 × 4 Latin squares. The treatments consisted of different sources of lipids, as follows: diet with no extra source of lipids; diet with cottonseed as the source of lipids; diet with soy oil; and diet with used frying soy oil. The intakes of dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, crude protein, total carbohydrates, and non-fibrous carbohydrates were similar... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the levels of sodium monensin on lactating cows and their effects on productive performance and milk protein fraction composition. It was used 12 Holstein cows, distributed in four balanced 3 × 3 Latin squares, and fed three diets: one control without monensin, and two diets with monensin at the levels of 24 or 48 mg/kg DM added to the concentrate. Milk production was daily measured throughout the entire experimental period. The samples used for analysis of milk composition were collected on two alternated days from the two daily milking. Non-protein nitrogen, total nitrogen and non-casein nitrogen contents were directly evaluated in the milk, and casein, whey protein and true protein contents were indirectly... |

Feet lesions and lameness prevalence were studied in Holstein dairy cows housed in free-stall and tie-stall systems in São Paulo state farms. In the free-stall system, digital dermatitis, flat sole and axial erosion were the prevailing lesions. However, in the tie-stall system the following lesions predominated: sole bleeding, white line disease, heel erosion, double sole, interdigital dermatitis, hoof cracks and long toellow heel. In both management systems a positive correlation was found between feet lesions and the number of parturitions. The cows' age and the number of parturitions in addition to the management system influenced feet lesions in dairy cows.. |
