Structural Change in the Meat, Poultry, Dairy and Grain Processing Industries AgEcon
Ollinger, Michael; Nguyen, Sang V.; Blayney, Donald P.; Chambers, William; Nelson, Kenneth B..
Consolidation and structural changes in the food industry have had profound impacts on firms, employees, and communities in many parts of the United States. Over 1972-92, eight important food industries underwent a structural transformation in which the number of plants declined by about one-third and the number of employees needed to staff the remaining plants dropped by more than 100,000 (20 percent). The number of plants in one other industry also dropped, but that industry added jobs. Economists generally attribute structural changes such as these to rising or falling demand and shifts in technology. This report examines consolidation and structural change in meatpacking, meat processing, poultry slaughter and processing, cheese products, fluid milk,...

Price distortions on the Hungarian raw milk market AgEcon
Voneki, Eva; Hockmann, Heinrich.
The paper attempts to identify the impact of market power in the Hungarian milk chain. Since the conventional conjectural variation approach provides suspicious results the incentives to collude are discussed in an alternative framework. It is argued that the high degree of market transparency, the high frequency of interaction, the low number of large firms which could actually influence market prices, the threat of severe sanctions due to the under-utilization of processing capacities as well as opportunistic behavior make collusive behavior more likely than competitive behavior. The empirical evidence for the period 1998 to 2006 supports this view.

Künftige Veränderungen in der Lieferantenstruktur einer Molkerei an drei Standorten- Ergebnisse einer Befragung AgEcon
Wolter, Michael; Schierholz, Friederike; Lassen, Birthe J..

Global Prospects for Dairy in Argentina and Chile: Evidence from Field Visits and Model Simulations AgEcon
Fuller, Frank H.; Beghin, John C.; Boland, Michael A.; Babcock, Bruce A.; Foster, William E..
We assess the international competitiveness of the dairy industries in Argentina and Chile, combining recent market intelligence gathered from field visits with quantitative simulations of global policy reform scenarios. Both countries exhibit strong potential for export growth but face significant internal and external barriers to expanding their dairy industries. Global policy reforms would resolve some of the international obstacles to their expansion. Argentina has great potential, but it is handicapped by its current macroeconomic policies, trade policy distortions, and the uncertainty associated with policy implementation. Chile is more limited in terms of natural capacity for expansion, but it has a positive trade and investment environment.

Seasonality in the Irish dairy processing industry AgEcon
Heinschink, Karin E.; Shalloo, Laurence; Wallace, Michael T..
The dairy landscape in the Republic of Ireland is characterized by pastoral spring-calving systems and a bell-shaped milk production curve. This seasonality at producer level initiates various implications at processor level, such as poor utilization of plant capacity off-peak season, a requirement for seasonal labour management and limited product options in autumn and winter months due to the properties of late-lactation milk. An optimization model was developed to analyze the impact of production seasonality and quota removal on the Irish dairy processing industry in terms of maximum processor gross surplus, the optimum product mix and the marginal values of the milk solids fat, protein and lactose. Processor gross surplus was specified as a function of...

Farmer Participation, the Dairy Industry, and the Rise of Dairy Production in China AgEcon
Huang, Jikun; Wu, Yunhua; Yang, Zhijian; Rozelle, Scott; Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Dong, Fengxia.
With rapid income growth, dairy production and consumption in China have increased significantly. This emergence of the dairy sector will provide opportunities for farmers to participate in a high-value, potentially more lucrative enterprise. The overall goal of this paper is to analyze the major determinants of farmers’ participation in dairy production. Our main question is whether or not the pace of the emergence of the dairy processing industry has affected the ability of farmers to participate in dairy production and whether or not it has limited the expansion of their herd size. Based on household, village and processor surveys conducted in the Greater Beijing region, our analysis shows that the location of dairy processing firms is one of the key...

Study of costs and revenue from the production and practice laboratories of the Federal Institute of Science and Technology of Minas Gerais - Campus Bambuí Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Corrêa,Uellington; Benedicto,Gideon Carvalho de; Carvalho,Francisval de Melo; Campos,Renato Silvério; Lopes,Marcos Aurélio; Ribeiro,Bruna Pontara Vilas Boas.
ABSTRACT The management of costs is used as a performance indicator by private companies in various sectors and, more recently, in public institutions, which offer free products and services to society. This article aimed to analyze the costs and revenues generated from the Production and Practice Labs (PPL) of Dairy Cattle and Dairy Products Processing from IFMG Campus Bambuí, to check the contribution of the revenues generated by these laboratories in reducing dependence on federal funds used to support these activities. The study was delimited with an investigation of the time series monthly revenues, costs and expenses of PPL analyzed from January 2012 to June 2014. The methodology used to determine the costs of Dairy Cattle production, was the...
