Studies on the ecology of the organisms involved in the production process are necessary for the development of sustainable agriculture, and sustainability is currently closely linked to the profitability of production. The objective of this study was to verify the occurrence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in weeds infesting Brazilian crops and to evaluate the inorganic phosphate solubilization potential of the associated microbiota. Mycorrhizal associations in Smallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp. & Endl.) H. Robinson (Asteraceae), Yacon, an ancient Andean crop and Smallanthus macroscyphus (Baker ex Martius) A. Grau, wild yacon, a close wild relative are described for the frst time. Yacon fbrous roots growing under feld conditions have high levels of colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (86 %). Other fungi colonizing roots included dark septate endophytes (45 %) and unidentifed fungi that are probably saprophytic (25 %) were observed. Plant roots can be colonized by asymptomatic fungal strains belonging to several taxa, among them, the group defined as Dark Septate Endophytes (DSE). Microdochium bolleyi commonly colonizes wheat roots and other crops. It is considered a weak pathogen or even a non-pathogenic fungal species, which has also been considered as a potential biocontrol agent against aggressive soil-borne pathogens in cereal crops.
