Community ecology, taxonomy and geographic distribution of the deep-sea shrimps in northeastern Brazil ArchiMer
Alves Júnior, Flavio De Almeida.
The Potiguar Basin was formed in mesocenozoic age occurring between the States of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte, being target of several cientific researches, especially by environmental agencies promoved by private initiative and public agents, due its great biological wealth and mineralogical in this region. However in Potiguar Basin, the environmental studies are being focused especially in costal zones, thus making deep-sea aspects nonexistent along the continental slope (> 200 m) still unknown, principally in aspects about the deep invertebrate biodiversity.Similar aspects about the little knowledge of the deep invertebrate biodiversity are observed for the regions of oceanic Islands, as for exemple, in Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Atoll as...

Long-term maintenance and public exhibition of deep-sea Hydrothermal fauna: the AbyssBox project ArchiMer
Shillito, Bruce; Ravaux, Juliette; Sarrazin, Jozee; Zbinden, Magali; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Barthelemy, Dominique.
The AbyssBox project aims to provide the first permanent public exhibition of live deep-sea hydrothermal fauna maintained at in situ pressure. AbyssBox is a pressurized aquarium designed to function permanently. Here we present details of the project after the public exhibition functioned for more than three years at Océanopolis aquarium in Brest, France. We also describe the AbyssBox pressure aquarium, and provide data and observations on vent shrimp (Mirocaris fortunata) and crabs (Segonzacia mesatlantica) that were sampled from 1700 m depth at the Lucky Strike vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge) during different cruises. While mortalities exceeded 50% during the first days following sampling, the remaining animals appeared to acclimate fairly well. Some...

Taxonomy of deep-sea shrimps of the Superfamily Oplophoroidea Dana 1852 (Decapoda: Caridea) from Southwestern Atlantic ArchiMer
De Almeida Alves-júnior, Flavio; Dos Santos Silva, Elinai; De Sá Leitão Câmara De Araújo, Marina; Cardoso, Irene; Bertrand, Arnaud; Souza-filho, Jesser F..
In this paper, we provide some available information about the occurrence and some taxonomic aspects of 19 species from the Superfamily Oplophoroidea in the southwestern Atlantic (Brazilian waters), with the update to 22 species of Oplophoroidea occurring in Brazilian waters. Samples were collected during two sets of surveys. The first was performed in 2009 and 2011 in the Potiguar Basin in northeast of Brazil (03–05°S; 38–35°W; between the States of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte) under the framework of the project “Avaliação da biota bentônica e planctônica da Bacia Potiguar e Ceará (Bpot)”, with samples collected from bottom trawls in the continental slope at depth ranging from 150–2068 m. Second, under the in the framework of the ABRACOS (Acoustic along...

Descriptions of Cottoniella fusiformis, Branchioglossumcf. minutum and Frikkiella searlesii (Rhodophyta, Ceramiales) from the Brazilian continental shelf Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Vinícius Peruzzi de; Valentin,Yocie Yoneshigue.
The diversity and distribution of marine macroalgae along the Brazilian coast have been investigated in detail. However, information about the deep-water macroalgal flora remains scarce, available mostly in scattered publications or gray literature. In this context, the aim of this study was to describe three specimens of Rhodophyta (Cottoniella fusiformis, Frikkiella searlesii and Branchioglossum cf. minutum) collected in the deep waters of the continental shelf off the coast of the state of Espírito Santo during expeditions of the program Evaluating the Potential of Living Resources in the Exclusive Economic Zone. The morphology and distribution of the collected species are detailed, and the taxonomic and biogeographic implications are discussed.

Distribution, diversity, and habitat partitioning of Scolecitrichidae species (Copepoda: Calanoida) down to 1,200 m in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean Anais da ABC (AABC)
DIAS,CRISTINA O.; ARAUJO,ADRIANA V. DE; BONECKER,SÉRGIO L.C..
In this study, we analyzed the main distributional features of Scolecitrichidae species in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (northern region of Rio de Janeiro State) and determined and described their habitat partitioning, based on a night series of stratified samplings down to a depth of 1,200 m. A total of 18 species from seven genera were identified and grouped according to their depth distribution. Distinct vertical patterns of total density, richness, diversity, and evenness were observed, with a decrease in density and an increase in diversity and richness with increasing depth. The total scolecitrichid abundance was dominated by a few epipelagic migrant species (Scolecithrix danae, Scolecithricella minor, Amallothrix tenuiserrata, and Lophothrix...
