Isolation of alkane-degrading bacteria from deep-sea Mediterranean sediments ArchiMer
Tapilatu, Y.; Acquaviva, M.; Guigue, C.; Miralles, G.; Bertrand, J.-c.; Cuny, P..
Aims: To isolate and identify alkane-degrading bacteria from deep-sea superficial sediments sampled at a north-western Mediterranean station. Methods and Results: Sediments from the water/sediment interface at a 2400 m depth were sampled with a multicorer at the ANTARES site off the French Mediterranean coast and were promptly enriched with Maya crude oil as the sole source of carbon and energy. Alkane-degrading bacteria belonging to the genera Alcanivorax, Pseudomonas, Marinobacter, Rhodococcus and Clavibacter-like were isolated, indicating that the same groups were potentially involved in hydrocarbon biodegradation in deep sea as in coastal waters. Conclusions: These results confirm that members of Alcanivorax are important obligate alkane degraders in...

Late Quaternary tephrostratigraphy and cryptotephrostratigraphy of core MD012422: Improving marine tephrostratigraphy of the NW Pacific ArchiMer
Matsu’ura, Tabito; Ikehara, Minoru; Ueno, Tatsuyuki.
We investigated the deep-sea sedimentary sequence of core MD012422 corresponding to the last 350 ka (since marine isotopic stage, MIS 10) from off Shikoku Island, NW Pacific Ocean, and refined its tephrostratigraphy. We detected many tephras and cryptotephras and correlated them with terrestrial tephras on the basis of the major- and trace-element compositions of their glass shards. Then we cross-checked our results against the reported marine tephrostratigraphy in the NW Pacific area and assessed the relative timing of tephra eruptions and bioevents. Many widespread tephras and cryptotephras originated from the Kyushu volcanic zone (Kuju, Aso, Kakuto, Aira, Ata, and Kikai volcanoes/calderas), along with the Takayama-Ng1 tephra (Tky-Ng1) from Suiendani...

Meiofauna assemblages of the Condor Seamount (North-East Atlantic Ocean) and adjacent deep-sea sediments ArchiMer
Zeppilli, Daniela; Bongiorni, Lucia; Cattaneo, Antonio; Danovaro, Roberto; Santos, R.
Seamounts are currently considered hotspots of biodiversity and biomass for macro- and megabenthic taxa, but knowledge of meiofauna is still limited. Studies have revealed the existence of highly diverse meiofauna assemblages; however most data are mainly qualitative or focused only on specific groups, thus preventing comparisons among seamounts and with other deep-sea areas. This study, conducted on Condor Seamount (Azores, North-East Atlantic Ocean), describes variation in abundance, biomass, community structure and biodiversity of benthic meiofauna from five sites located on the Condor Seamount: and one site away from the seamount. While the summit of the seamount hosted the highest alpha biodiversity, the flanks and the bases showed a rich meiofauna...

Organic-rich sediments in ventilated deep-sea environments: Relationship to climate, sea level, and trophic changes ArchiMer
Bertrand, P; Pedersen, Tf; Schneider, R; Shimmield, G; Lallier-verges, E; Disnar, Jr; Massias, D; Villanueva, J; Tribovillard, N; Huc, Ay; Giraud, X; Pierre, C; Venec-peyre, Mt.
Sediments on the Namibian Margin in the SE Atlantic between water depths of similar to1000 and similar to3600 m are highly enriched in hydrocarbon-prone organic matter. Such sedimentation has occurred for more than 2 million years and is geographically distributed over hundreds of kilometers along the margin, so that the sediments of this region contain a huge concentrated stock of organic carbon. It is shown here that most of the variability in organic content is due to relative dilution by buried carbonates. This reflects both export productivity and diagenetic dissolution, not differences in either water column or bottom water anoxia and related enhanced preservation of organic matter. These observations offer a new mechanism for the formation of...

RECENT PLANKTONIC FORAMINIFERA FROM DEEP-SEA SEDIMENTS FROM THE EASTERN EQUATORIAL PACIFIC: PROXIES OF THE EQUATORIAL FRONT IN THE LATE QUATERNARY Boletín de Investigaciones
Martinez,Jose Ignacio; Bedoya,Geovanny.
Planktonic foraminifera recovered from 25 deep-sea sediment samples (core-tops) from the eastern Equatorial Pacific were analyzed for their geographic distribution and possible environmental controls. Samples collected deeper than the carbonate lysocline (~2800 m) show significant signs of dissolution, - when compared to sediment-trap samples -, resulting in the increase of the solution-resistant species Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Neogloboquadrina pachyderma and Globorotalia cultrata and the reduction of the solution-susceptible species Globigerinita glutinata, Globigerinoides ruber and Globigerinoides sacculifer. Three bioprovinces were recognized by cluster analysis: (1) bioprovince I that occurs on the Cocos Ridge where G. cultrata and N. pachyderma...
