Biophysical and sociocultural factors underlying spatial trade-offs of ecosystem services in semiarid watersheds Ecology and Society
Harrison, Paula A; Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford; Paula.Harrison@ouce.ox.ac.uk; Berry, Pam; Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford; pam.berry@eci.ox.ac.uk.
Biophysical and social systems are linked to form social-ecological systems whose sustainability depends on their capacity to absorb uncertainty and cope with disturbances. In this study, we explored the key biophysical and socio-cultural factors underlying ecosystem service supply in two semiarid watersheds of southern Spain. These included variables associated with the role that freshwater flows and biodiversity play in securing the system’s capacity to sustain essential ecosystem services and their relationship with social demand for services, local water governance, and land-use intensification. Our results reveal the importance of considering the invisible dimensions of water and biodiversity, i.e. green freshwater flows and trait-based...

Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle; Sauzade, Didier; Ravoux, Georges; Coves, Denis.
Sea fish farms with production of more than 20 tons per year in France must obtain two operating licences: (i) one for Sea Farming (AECM), with the aim of ensuring that the granted site and use of the maritime public domain for exploitation will respect all restrictions of general interest; (ii) one for regulating Facilities Classified for the Protection of the Environment (ICPE). Although the first one requires a relatively simple licence request file, the second one demands a very complete file, which includes, beyond the notice of exploitation information, a complete impact study, as well as a hazards study and a health and safety notice. In this context, petitioners in Corsica (adjustment of status or new exploitation) are faced with the same...

Exploring demand for forestry in Lake Victoria Basin (Western Kenya): An econometric approach AgEcon
Jindal, Rohit.
This paper determines the demand for a forestry program amongst rural households in western Kenya. It is based on a field survey with 277 households, using a stratified random sampling approach. The study follows attribute based method to elicit farmers’ preferences. Demand is measured in terms of additional number of trees that a household is willing to plant under different price schedules, including direct economic incentive to plant new seedlings. The mean willingness to plant new trees per household increases from 44 trees when farmers have to pay 10ksh/seedling, to 244 trees when farmers receive a payment of 10ksh/seedling. The paper uses fixed effects, random effects and random effect tobit models to estimate relevant parameters. Hausman...

The benefits to the Australian Pig meat industry from an increase in demand for a hypothetical low cholesterol pork product AgEcon
Slattery, Henry; Griffith, Garry R.; Malcolm, Bill; Dunshea, Frank.
This is the third of a series of papers examining the potential economic effects from the introduction of a hypothetical low cholesterol pork product into the Australian market. Here, a newly updated pig meat model reported by Griffith et al. (2010) is used to model the industry wide impacts of the Bellhouse et al. (2010) survey results on consumer willingness to pay for this new pork product. Six different scenarios are examined that are combinations of a 10, 20 or 30 per cent increase in consumer demand, with and without a 10 per cent increase in the costs of producing the more valuable pork. The simulation results for the various scenarios indicate total annual industry benefits of some $450m for an increase in aggregate willingness to pay of 30 per...

Growing Demand for Animal-Protein-Source Products in Indonesia: Trade Implications AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F..
New elasticities were estimated from Indonesia's 1996, 1999, and 2002 National Socio-Economic Survey, or SUSENAS, data using a double-hurdle demand specification. The estimates suggest that major changes in Indonesian household diets are expected in the coming years, as income growth is sustained and as urbanization proceeds at a fast pace. The consumption 'trading-up' pattern for animal-protein source products observed in many countries may also occur in Indonesia. In this particular case, households will shift from fish to dairy and meat products. The trade impacts of this emerging consumption pattern will be determined by the cost of adjustment in Indonesia's domestic productive capacity and the influence of the country's predominantly Islamic tradition.

A Study of the Demand for Medical Services in Taiwan AgEcon
Chung, Rebecca H.; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Brown, Mark G..
This paper presents a version of the household production theory to explain the demand for health. In this study we have explored the factors that influence the demand for medical services and medical expenditures in Taiwan. A negative binomial model was used to study the demand for medical services. We found that the demand for medical services and medical expenditures are related to household composition, household income, family size, occupation of the household head, and living environments. In addition, we found higher usage of medical services on average for those households with medical insurances other than the national health insurance.

Competition between the U.S. and West Africa in International Cotton Trade: A Focus on Import Demand in China AgEcon
Muhammad, Andrew; McPhail, Lihong Lu; Kiawu, James.
We estimate the demand for imported cotton in China and assess the competitiveness of cotton-exporting countries. Given the assertion that African cotton producers are ill affected by U.S. cotton subsidies, our focus is the price competition between the C4 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mali) and United States in China. Demand estimates are used to project how U.S. prices affect China’s imports by country. In comparing demand projections, results show that the relationship between the United States and the C4 has more to do with how U.S. prices can affect global prices rather than any substitute or competitive relationship in the Chinese market.

International sorghum trade: United States beyond the Mexican dependency? AgEcon
Duch-Carvallo, Teresa; Malaga, Jaime E..
This research proposes the estimation of a partial equilibrium econometric and simulation international trade model for sorghum: United States and Mexico component. Sixteen equations were simultaneously estimated and validated as a system using seemingly unrelated regression. Results on parameter estimates agree with economic theory and a working model for simulation and forecast was obtained. Forecast scenarios suggest that the dependency of sorghum trade between US and Mexico will continue.
