Advertising and Retail Promotion of Washington Apples: A Structural Latent Variable Approach to Promotion Evaluation AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Gao, Xiaoming; Patterson, Paul M..
"Commodity promotion" consists of many activities, each designed to contribute to a consumer's product knowledge or influence tastes. However, both knowledge and tastes are unobservable, or latent, variables influencing demand. This paper specifies a dynamic structural model of fresh fruit demand that treats promotion and other socioeconomic variables as "causal" variables influencing these latent variables. Estimating this state-space model using a Kalman filter approach provides estimates of both the system parameters and a latent variable series. The results show that these latent effects contribute positively to apple and other fruit consumption, while reducing banana consumption.

Import Demand Estimation and the Generalized Composite Commodity Theorem AgEcon
Asche, Frank; Guttormsen, Atle G.; Kristofersson, Dadi; Roheim, Cathy A..
A frequently encountered problem in import demand estimation is how to account for competition between imports and domestic production. Traditionally, use of the Armington model has been a way to handle this problem. This is a disaggregate model which distinguishes commodities by country of origin with import demand determined in a separable two-step procedure. The model appears frequently in analysis of international agricultural markets. However, the Armington model relies on a set of weak separability assumptions, which several authors have shown to be highly questionable. In this paper, a new aggregation theorem, the Generalized Composite Commodity Theorem (GCCT), is applied to test whether imports can be treated as a separate group. An advantage with...

Estimating a Demand System with Seasonally Differenced Data AgEcon
Harri, Ardian; Brorsen, B. Wade; Muhammad, Andrew; Anderson, John D..
Several recent papers have used annual changes and monthly data to estimate demand systems. Such use of overlapping data introduces a moving average error term. This paper shows how to obtain consistent and asymptotically efficient estimates of a demand system using seasonally differenced data. Monte Carlo simulations and an empirical application to the estimation of the U.S. meat demand are used to compare the proposed estimator with alternative estimators. Once the correct estimator is used, there is no advantage to using overlapping data in estimating a demand system.

VOLUNTARY RESTRICTIONS ON TELEVISION ADVERTISING FOR CARBONATED SOFT DRINKS: THE IMPACT ON CONSUMER DEMAND AgEcon
Berning, Joshua P..
The health implications and costs associated with increasing levels of obesity are a widespread global issue. In the United States, there is a growing interest in identifying methods to reduce obesity levels. Particular focus has been given to advertisements for unhealthy foods, especially advertisements directed at young children as a number of studies conclude that advertising influences the perceptions, requests and short-term consumption behavior of young children. Recently, several of the largest global food producers began voluntary selfregulation of their advertisements to children under the age of 12. The group of participants includes the two largest carbonated soft drink (CSD) manufacturers. We estimate the demand for CSDs in the US over 15...

The Effects of a "Fat Tax" on the Nutrient Intake of French Households AgEcon
Allais, Olivier; Bertail, Patrice; Nichele, Veronique.
This article assesses the effects of a "fat tax" on the nutrient intake of French households across different income groups using a method that estimates the nutrient elasticities of French households. We estimate a complete demand system by aggregating an individual demand system over cohorts. The use of a cohort model is justified by the incompleteness of our data. We find that a "fat tax" would have ambiguous and extremely small effects on the nutrient intake of French households, and its associated economic welfare costs would be similarly weak.

Japanese Consumer Demand for Dairy Products AgEcon
Campo, Isabelle Schluep; Beghin, John C..
We econometrically estimate consumer demand for dairy products in Japan using time series data for 1960-2003. We identify economic, cultural, and demographic forces that have been influencing dairy consumption patterns. We use the Almost Ideal (AI) Demand System by Deaton and Muellbauer and its variant, the Semiflexible Almost Ideal (SAI) Demand System developed by Moschini to impose concavity locally by reducing the rank of the Hessian of the expenditure function. We estimate three specifications: a full system comprising of four dairy products (fluid milk, powder milk, cheese, and butter), and an allother-goods aggregate; a subsystem for food made of four dairy goods and an all-other-food aggregate; and a sub-system of the four dairy products. The...

Estimating Asymmetric Advertising Response: An Application to U.S. Nonalcoholic Beverage Demand AgEcon
Zheng, Yuqing; Kaiser, Harry M..
We propose a regime-switching model that allows demand to respond asymmetrically to upward and downward advertising changes. With the introduction of a smooth transition function, the model features smooth rather than abrupt parameter changes between regimes. We apply the model to nonalcoholic beverage data in the United States for 1974 through 2005 to investigate asymmetric advertising response. Results indicate that a decrease in milk advertising had a more profound impact on milk demand than an increase did. An increase in milk advertising had no impact on milk demand, but a decrease could have an own-advertising elasticity up to 0.049.

Projecting World Food Demand: A Comparison of Alternative Demand Systems AgEcon
Yu, Wusheng; Hertel, Thomas W.; Preckel, Paul V.; Eales, James S..
Projections of world food demands hinge critically on the underlying functional form used to predict future demands. Simple functional forms can lead to unrealistic projections by failing to capture changes in income elasticities of demand as consumer becomes wealthier. This paper compares several demand systems in the projection of disaggregated food demand across a wide range of countries with different income levels using a global general equilibrium model. We find that the recently introduced AIDADS system represents a substantial improvement over existing demand systems currently in use in CGE modeling. In particular, our projection results show that for relatively poor regions experiencing rapid income growth, the widely used LES and CDE demand...

Consumer Cohorts and Demand Systems AgEcon
Gustavsen, Geir Waehler; Rickertsen, Kyrre.
The Norwegian purchases pattern of non-alcoholic beverages has changed substantially. The observed changes cannot be fully explained by changes in relative prices and income, and other variables are likely to be important. Cohort variables have not been given much attention in demand analysis. Our main contribution is to include age, period, and cohort (APC) variables into a demand system. The system is applied to purchases of non-alcoholic beverages. Wald tests show the importance of including APC variables. A Monte-Carlo analysis shows how replacing the APC variables with an age and a trend variable results in misleading age effects on milk purchases.

PROJECTING WORLD FOOD DEMAND USING ALTERNATIVE DEMAND SYSTEMS AgEcon
Yu, Wusheng; Hertel, Thomas W.; Preckel, Paul V.; Eales, James S..
Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models are increasingly being used to project world food markets in order to support forward-looking policy analysis. Such projections hinge critically on the underlying functional form for representing consumer demand. Simple functional forms can lead to unrealistic projections by failing to capture changes in income elasticities of demand. We adopt as our benchmark the recently introduced AIDADS demand system and compare it with several alternaive demand systems currently in widespread use in CGE models. This comparison is conducted in the context of projections for disaggregated global food demand using a global CGE model. We find that AIDADS represents a substantial improvement, particularly for the rapidly...
