The spatial structure of demersal fish assemblages on the continental shelf of the NW Mediterranean Sea was examined on a large scale between the Straits of Gibraltar and the Gulf of Lions. In contrast to its predominant role in the spatial distribution of species composition, described worldwide, it seems depth has only a limited effect on the distribution patterns of the total abundance and diversity of demersal fishes. In addition, evidence is provided for the division of the whole study area into 3 geographical fish assemblages. The influence of Atlantic inputs and the semi-permanent Almena-Oran hydrographic front play a key role in defining the Alboran Sea as a specific fish fauna area. Moreover, the clear differentiation between 2 distinct... |

The catch from bottom longline stations sampled from a series of research cruises around Lanzarote and Fuerteventura (Canary Islands, NE Atlantic) was analysed in terms of fish distribution, density and diversity. The distribution of the number of species and individuals caught per station appeared to fit well the Poisson and Exponential distribution function, respectively. In particular, the parameter of the Poisson's distribution appeared to provide an index of the point (at station scale) diversity, and its confidence interval, allowing for statistical comparisons. The relationships between point diversity, the alpha diversity (in the depth strata) and the beta diversity (along the depth gradient) were investigated. Around the islands, the density and... |

ABSTRACT The feeding ecology of five elasmobranch species was studied on the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro, southwestern Atlantic Ocean. The specimens were caught with a trawl or bottom longline between January 2006 and August 2007. The diets of Psammobatis rutrum and Psammobatis extenta appeared to be basically carcino-benthophagous, with a very small niche width. Rioraja agassizii was basically carcino/ichthyo-benthophagous, also with a narrow niche, including teleost fish and shrimp, but in different proportions according to age and sex. Rhizoprionodon lalandii was ichthyophagous, not influenced by age or sex. The analyses of these species and Atlantoraja cyclophora indicated two trophic groups: one composed of the smaller rays, P. extenta and P.... |

We present an inventory of demersal fishes from the inner continental shelf off Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil. Three sites were sampled monthly, between March 2003 and February 2005, with standardized bottom trawls (30 minutes, 16 m depth, 22/16 mm mesh). A total of 7.857 specimens were captured, belonging to three species of Chondrichthyes and 95 species of Actinopterygii (77 genera and 40 families). The occurrence of Ampharius phrygiatus represents a southern range extension for this species, which was previously known only from the narrow coastal stretch between Guyana and Maranhão State (Brazil). The record of Synodus poeyi represents the first record of this species in Brazil and in the South Atlantic, as it was previously recorded only in the Caribbean. The... |

In the period of January and December, 1995, there were collected by means of overtrawl, 12977 samples of macroinvertebrates and demersal fishes, in the Armação do Itapocoroy, Penha (SC), between the depths of 6 to 10 meters, in the periods of morning, afternoon, and evening. There were registered the incidence of 57 families, 80 kinds and 92 species distributed between the macroinvertebrates and demersal fishes. The families of greater incidence were: Portunidae (30.7%), Strombidae (11.4%), Sciaenidae (11.1%) and Bothidae (10.3%) which all together, contributed with 63.5% of the total samples. The grouping analysis presented greater diversity in the Winter (2.77) and smaller one in the Springtime (1,34); the amplitude of variation H' reflects the great... |
