First record of Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus in the state of Amapá, northern Brazil Acta Amazonica
SARAIVA,Jose Ferreira; MAITRA,Ahana; GALARDO,Allan Kardec Ribeiro; SCARPASSA,Vera Margarete.
ABSTRACT We report the first record of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) in the state of Amapá, northern Brazil. Two female specimens were collected from a Shannon trap in the locality of Ilha de Santana, municipality of Santana, Amapá. The occurrence of the species was confirmed with the installation of ten ovitraps. Aedes albopictus is a species of epidemiological importance for the transmission of arboviruses. Amapá was one of two Brazilian states without any record of this species.

GENES DE SUSCEPTIBILIDAD/RESISTENCIA A Flavivirus, IMPLICACIONES EN LA SEVERIDAD DE LA INFECCIÓN Acta biol.Colomb.
PRADAARISMENDY,JEANETTE; CASTELLANOS,JAIME E.

Limited replication of yellow fever 17DD and 17D-Dengue recombinant viruses in rhesus monkeys Anais da ABC (AABC)
Trindade,Gisela F.; Marchevsky,Renato S.; Fillipis,Ana M.B. de; Nogueira,Rita M.R.; Bonaldo,Myrna C.; Acero,Pedro C.; Caride,Elena; Freire,Marcos S.; Galler,Ricardo.
For the development of safe live attenuated flavivirus vaccines one of the main properties to be established is viral replication. We have used real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and virus titration by plaque assay to determine the replication of yellow fever 17DD virus (YFV 17DD) and recombinant yellow fever 17D viruses expressing envelope proteins of dengue virus serotypes 2 and 4 (17D-DENV-2 and 17D-DENV-4). Serum samples from rhesus monkeys inoculated with YFV 17DD and 17D-DENV chimeras by intracerebral or subcutaneous route were used to determine and compare the viremia induced by these viruses. Viral load quantification in samples from monkeys inoculated by either route with YFV 17DD virus suggested a restricted capability of...

Membrane and envelope virus proteins co-expressed as lysosome associated membrane protein (LAMP) fused antigens: a potential tool to develop DNA vaccines against flaviviruses Anais da ABC (AABC)
Dhalia,Rafael; Maciel Jr.,Milton; Cruz,Fábia S.P.; Viana,Isabelle F.T.; Palma,Mariana L.; August,Thomas; Marques Jr.,Ernesto T.A..
Vaccination is the most practical and cost-effective strategy to prevent the majority of the flavivirus infection to which there is an available vaccine. However, vaccines based on attenuated virus can potentially promote collateral side effects and even rare fatal reactions. Given this scenario, the developent of alternative vaccination strategies such as DNA-based vaccines encoding specific flavivirus sequences are being considered. Endogenous cytoplasmic antigens, characteristically plasmid DNA-vaccine encoded, are mainly presented to the immune system through Major Histocompatibility Complex class I - MHC I molecules. The MHC I presentation via is mostly associated with a cellular cytotoxic response and often do not elicit a satisfactory humoral...

Autoimmune features caused by dengue fever: a case report BJID
Jardim,Denis Leonardo Fontes; Tsukumo,Daniela Miti Lemos; Angerami,Rodrigo N.; Carvalho Filho,Marco Antonio de; Saad,Mário José Abdalla.
Dengue virus is the most important mosquito-borne viral disease in the world. Co-circulation of the four types of dengue viruses and expansion of dengue epidemic gave rise to infection enhancement and a big expansion of clinical aspects of the disease. Herein we report a case of a 25-year-old white woman with dengue fever and numerous associated autoimmune features. Our patient had proteinuria, an extensive right pleural effusion, a thin pericardial effusion and ascites. She had a low C3 level and positive antinuclear antibody; cryoglobulins were also positive. The numerous autoimmune features of this patient were a diagnostic challenge, since she was a young woman and could be easily mistaken for a rheumatologic patient in a newly open disease. Dengue...

Acute atrial fibrillation during dengue hemorrhagic fever BJID
Veloso,Henrique Horta; Ferreira Júnior,João Anísio; Paiva,Joyce Morgana Braga de; Honório,Júlio Faria; Bellei,Nancy C. Junqueira; Paola,Angelo Amato Vincenzo de.
Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by the mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Cardiac rhythm disorders, such as atrioventricular blocks and ventricular ectopic beats, appear during infection and are attributed to viral myocarditis. However, supraventricular arrhythmias have not been reported. We present a case of acute atrial fibrillation, with a rapid ventricular rate, successfully treated with intravenous amiodarone, in a 62-year-old man with dengue hemorrhagic fever, who had no structural heart disease.

Association of dengue virus infection susceptibility with polymorphisms of 2'-5'-oligoadenylate synthetase genes: a case–control study BJID
Thamizhmani,Ramanathan; Vijayachari,Paluru.
Oligoadenylate synthetases play an important role in the immune response against dengue virus. Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the oligoadenylate synthetases genes are known to affect oligoadenylate synthetases activity and are associated with outcome of viral infections. Polymorphisms in the OAS1 SNPs (rs1131454), OAS2 SNPs (rs1293762, rs15895 and rs1732778) and OAS3 SNPs (rs2285932 and rs2072136) genes were studied using PCR followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism methods in 30 patients for dengue infection and 40 control group who have no documented evidence of symptomatic dengue. An increase in the frequency of OAS2 gene rs1293762 SNP G/T heterozygotes (p = 0.012), decrease in the frequency of SNP G/G homozygotes (p = 0.005) and...

Dengue: a review of the laboratory tests a clinician must know to achieve a correct diagnosis BJID
De Paula,Sérgio Oliveira; Fonseca,Benedito Antônio Lopes da.
Dengue is the most important disease caused by an arbovirus (1, 2, 3 and 4 serotypes) worldwide, especially in the tropical and sub-tropical regions. Its clinical manifestations range from asymptomatic infections to a severe disease characterized by hemorrhage and shock. The incidence of dengue virus activity in the Americas has substantially increased from 1980 to 1994. In Brazil, the increase in the incidence of dengue is especially linked to the dissemination of Aedes aegypti. Thus, a rapid and accurate dengue diagnosis is of paramount importance for effective control of dengue outbreaks [8]. Five serological tests have been used for the diagnosis of dengue infection: hemagglutination-inhibition (HI), complement fixation (CF), neutralization test (NT),...

Dengue hemorrhagic fever and acute hepatitis: a case report BJID
Mourão,Maria Paula Gomes; Lacerda,Marcus Vinícius Guimarães de; Bastos,Michele de Souza; Albuquerque,Bernardino Cláudio de; Alecrim,Wilson Duarte.
Dengue fever is the world's most important viral hemorrhagic fever disease, the most geographically wide-spread of the arthropod-born viruses, and it causes a wide clinical spectrum of disease. We report a case of dengue hemorrhagic fever complicated by acute hepatitis. The initial picture of classical dengue fever was followed by painful liver enlargement, vomiting, hematemesis, epistaxis and diarrhea. Severe liver injury was detected by laboratory investigation, according to a syndromic surveillance protocol, expressed in a self-limiting pattern and the patient had a complete recovery. The serological tests for hepatitis and yellow fever viruses were negative. MAC-ELISA for dengue was positive.

Viruses vector control proposal: genus Aedes emphasis BJID
Reis,Nelson Nogueira; Silva,Alcino Lázaro da; Reis,Elma Pereira Guedes; Silva,Flávia Chaves e; Reis,Igor Guedes Nogueira.
Abstract The dengue fever is a major public health problem in the world. In Brazil, in 2015, there were 1,534,932 cases, being 20,320 cases of severe form, and 811 deaths related to this disease. The distribution of Aedes aegypti, the vector, is extensive. Recently, Zika and Chikungunya viruses had arisen, sharing the same vector as dengue and became a huge public health issue. Without specific treatment, it is urgently required as an effective vector control. This article is focused on reviewing vector control strategies, their effectiveness, viability and economical impact. Among all, the Sterile Insect Technique is highlighted as the best option to be adopted in Brazil, once it is largely effectively used in the USA and Mexico for plagues related to...

Differences in the replicative capacities of clinical isolates of dengue virus in C6/36 cells and in urban populations of Aedes aegypti from Colombia, South America BJID
Quintero-Gil,Diana Carolina; Uribe-Yepes,Alexander; Ospina,Marta; Díaz,Francisco Javier; Martinez-Gutierrez,Marlen.
ABSTRACT Dengue, the most prevalent arboviral disease worldwide, is caused by any of the four dengue virus (DENV) serotypes that co-circulate constantly in hyperendemic areas such as Medellin (Colombia), and these serotypes are transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Aedes. In this study, we evaluated the replicative capacity of strains isolated in Medellin between 2003 and 2007 in C6/36 cells and in colonies of Aedes aegypti collected during 2010-2011 from high or low-incidence areas within the same city. The phylogenetic analysis grouped isolates according to the predominant genotypes found in the Americas, and the in vitro characterization showed differences in the morphological changes induced by the isolates of each of the isolated serotypes compared...
