Odour Reduction from Pig Housing using Alkaline Air Cleaning CIGR Journal
Joergensen, M..
Testing the addition of an alkali (NaOH) in an air cleaner (Munters A/S) connected to a finisher pig unit during the summer resulted in an average odour reduction of 47%. The measurement days were spread over two batches of pigs (summer and autumn). The average odour reduction for the entire test period was 41%. The measurements taken during the autumn did not show a statistically significant odour reduction. Furthermore, the results showed that it was possible to reduce the emission of hydrogen sulphide by 53%. As expected, the levels of ammonia and carbon dioxide were not reduced. When using 100% air cleaning, the consumption of the air cleaner for two batches of finishers (30 – 110 kg) amounted to 355 L water and 2.4 kg 27.7% NaOH solution,...

Response of Potato to Drip and Gun Irrigation system CIGR Journal
Mathias Andersen.
The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of different irrigation and N fertilization regimes by gun irrigation and drip-fertigation on potato production, and subsequently optimize the supply of water and N fertilizer to the growth condition of the specific season and minimize nitrate leaching without compromising profits. Four replicate plots of each treatment with varying predefined and model-based (Daisy and Aquacrop crop model) irrigation and N fertilization levels was used in the study. Two experiments were conducted. In experiment-I, treatments consisted of one drip-fertigation system (IdsNds) and two gun irrigation systems (GIdsN120 and GIaN120) to display the differences on growth, yield and water use efficiency of potato. All treatments...

A new preparatory approach of decapod and thoracican crustaceans from the Middle Danian at Fakse, Denmark Naturalis
Jakobsen, Sten Lennart.
Many papers on the taxonomy of fossil crustaceans are often based upon poorly preserved material and/or specimens that have been insufficiently prepared. The purpose of the present note is to outline some preparation methods that are applied in our (J.S.H. Collins and S.L.J.) ongoing studies of anomuran and brachyuran decapods from the Middle Danian limestones at Fakse quarry (Denmark), which have greatly enhanced the quality of our material. The techniques briefly outlined here involve: 1 – staining method; 2 – water blasting (as a cleaning tool in preparation of fossils); and 3 – negative preparation (with acid). Some of these techniques will have wide applications in other fields of paleontological research.

Palaeontological collections at the Geological Museum, University of Copenhagen: from Cabinet of Curiosities to databases Naturalis
Harper, D.A.T..
Geological collections were established in the University of Copenhagen during the early 1700s with the presentation of fossil, mineral and rock collections by Count A.G. Moltke, mainly assembled by Ole Worm (1588-1654) in his Museum Wormianum. Currently the palaeontological collections in the Geological Museum, alone, contain over 1 million specimens, including 26,000 types. The focus of the collection remains on material from Denmark and Greenland. Highlights from Greenland include evidence of early life from the Archaean Isua Complex, the early Cambrian Sirius Passet fauna, Devonian amphibians, Triassic dinosaurs, mammals and pterosaurs, Jurassic and Cretaceous ammonites together with Jurassic and Cretaceous plants. The Danish collections are dominated...

Leverbylder hos økologiske slagtekøer - resultater fra en spørgeundersøgelse Organic Eprints
Jorgensen, K.F.; Kjeldsen, A.M.; Strudsholm, F..

A matter of trust: How trust influences organic consumption Organic Eprints
Smed, Sinne; Andersen, Laura Mørch; Kærgård, N.; Daugbjerg, Carsten.
This paper shows that general trust in the organic label as well as perceived positive health effects of eating organic products have positive causal effects on actual organic consumption. The data used is panel data for 830 households reporting actual purchases together with responding to a comprehensive concerning questionnaire attitudes in 2002 and 2007. The paper also shows that perceived positive environmental effects and perceived better animal welfare related to organic production have no significant effect on actual behaviour, whereas concern for artificial additives and low price sensitivity increases the organic budget share. Surprisingly enough, households who worry about GMO or pesticides do not seem to have a higher propensity to purchase...

Perceptions, values and behaviour: The case of organic foods Organic Eprints
Wier, Mette; Andersen, Laura Mørch; Millock, Katrin; O'Doherty Jensen, Katherine; Rosenkvist, Lars.
This analysis of the Danish organic food market investigates the relationships between household purchasing behaviour and stated values, motives and concerns. Attention is also given to the importance of sales chan-nels and the functions of labelling. We identify the specific attributes that induce consumers to purchase or-ganic foods, distinguishing ‘private’ from ‘public’ valued attributes. Using household level information on stated values and concerns and data regarding real market purchases for approximately 2000 households dur-ing the period 1997-2001, the declared values and actual market behaviour of the same households are com-pared. We find that household propensity to purchase organic foods increases significantly with the declared importance...

Ecology and trust in mangement and business research 1995-2010. Tentative findings. MULTI-TRUST research paper Organic Eprints
Rittenhofer, Iris.
Trust’ is considered an important driving factor for the development of ‘green growth’ strategies. An understanding of how ‘trust’ is created and maintained is crucial for those strategies. However, b& m research does neither offer consistent nor conclusive definitions of ‘trust’. Based on the review, a tentative suggestion is that the development of promising practices for the creation and maintenance of ‘trust’ is to be related to the organic complexities located in Denmark that characterize the transformation of the social space of organic agribusiness. Organic complexities are amongst others characterized by the highly fragmented meaning and current restructuring of the content of ‘organic’, diverse sale challenges, interdependences in the...

Flow of nutrients and climate relevant gases in experimental rotations on three soil types Organic Eprints
Petersen, Søren O..
Within organic farming there is a continued effort to close nutrient cycles in order to improve nutrient use efficiency for crop production while also minimizing environmental impacts. In Denmark a long-term crop rotation experiment on three soil types, i.e., Jyndevad (4.5% clay, 2.0% C), Foulum (8.8% clay, 3.8% C) and Flakkebjerg (15.5% clay, 1.7% C), provides a platform for studies of agronomic and environmental aspects of organic farming. Selected results from investigations at these sites are presented. In 2007 and 2008 one study determined soil microbial biomass N and mineralizable N on all three locations during the growing season in four selected rotations, three organic and one conventional; the objective was to evaluate the role of soil...

Has organic farming modernised itself out of business? An analysis of reverting organic farmers Organic Eprints
Kaltoft, Pernille; Risgaard, Marie-Louise.
In Denmark organic farming presently experiences a recession with 500 organic farmers leaving the organic sector this year (out of a total of 3500 farmers) and a lot more are considering to revert. A range of earlier studies has reported on the process of modernisation of organic farming. Not at least in Denmark where a lot of conventional farmers have converted to the organic mode of production and where conventional/traditional production and distribution channels have adopted a line of organic products, and the established extension and advisory service includes both conventional and organic farming. The analysis in this paper is based on two qualitative interview studies among Danish organic farmers reverting in three regions of Denmark. The one...

Heterogeneity in pursed business strategies in local (organic) food value chains – Empirical evidence from Denmark Organic Eprints
Teuber, Ramona; Jensen, Jørgen Dejgård.
The study provides a typology of different business strategies employed by Danish agricultural producers and processors in local food value chains comprising both organic and non-organic food producers and processors, and investigates how Danish agricultural producers and processors define and perceive local food and whether definitions and perceptions differ across stakeholders groups. Furthermore, the study analyses which factors determine the decision to become involved in local value chains and whether these determinants differ significantly across producers and processors. The analyses are based on empirical data from a quantitative stakeholder survey carried out in the spring of 2017. Overall, the results highlight that local (organic) food value...

Organic farming systems benefit biodiversity and natural pest regulation in white cabbage Organic Eprints
Meyling, N.V.; Navntoft, S.; Eilenberg, J..
Natural regulation of cabbage root flies works well in experimental organic cropping systems of white cabbage. Low input and complex organic systems benefit functional biodiversity by providing good living conditions to several groups of natural enemies. Intercropped green manure benefits large predators while small predatory beetles favour low input organic systems with bare soil between crop rows.
