Genotypic diversity and virulence factors of Streptococcus mutans in caries-free and caries-active individuals BABT
Braga,Miula Portelinha; Piovesan,Augusta; Valarini,Natália; Maciel,Sandra Mara; Andrade,Flaviana Bombarda de; Poli-Frederico,Regina Célia.
The objective of this study was to analyze the genotypic diversity, frequency of serotypes and the detection of mutacins from Streptococcus mutans isolates in caries-free and caries-active individuals.A total of 260 S. mutans isolated from 28 individuals with and without dental caries were subjected to AP-PCR and PCR screening of glucosyltransferase B, mutacin and serotype genes, which showed the presence of. 70 different genotypes. There was no statistically significant association between the presence of genes for serotypes and mutacins with dental caries. However, there was a statistically significant and a strong association between the higher genotypic diversity in the subjects with caries (r = 0.72, p = 0.001). There was an increase in the number of...

Efficacy of removal of cariogenic bacteria and carious dentin by ablation using different modes of Er:YAG lasers BJMBR
Baraba,A.; Kqiku,L.; Gabrić,D.; Verzak,Ž.; Hanscho,K.; Miletić,I..
The primary objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate the efficiency of removal of cariogenic bacteria and carious dentin by ablation using two lasers: fluorescence-feedback controlled (FFC) Er:YAG laser and different pulses of Er:YAG laser based on variable square pulse technology (VSPt). The secondary objective was to measure the temperature during laser ablation of carious tissue. Seventy-two extracted human molars were used in this study. Sixty teeth with carious dentin were randomly divided into four experimental groups according to the treatment for caries removal: group 1: 400 µs (FFC group); group 2: super short pulse (SSP group, 50 µs pulse); group 3: medium short pulse (MSP group, 100 µs pulse); group 4: short pulse (SP group, 300 µs...

Detection of oral streptococci in dental biofilm from caries-active and caries-free children BJM
Silva,Andréa Cristina Barbosa da; Cruz,Jader dos Santos; Sampaio,Fábio Correia; Araújo,Demetrius Antônio Machado de.
This work correlated the presence of oral streptococci in dental biofilm with clinical indexes of caries and oral hygiene in caries-active and caries-free children. S. mutans and/or S. sobrinus in the dental biofilm does not indicate a direct risk for developing dental caries.

Effect of Chilean propolis on cariogenic bacteria Lactobacillus fermentum Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Saavedra,Nicolás; Barrientos,Leticia; Herrera,Christian L; Alvear,Marysol; Montenegro,Gloria; Salazar,Luis A.
Dental caries is an infectious disease of worldwide public health concern. Among the bacteria involved in this pathology are Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus and organisms belonging to the genera Actinomyces and Lactobacillus. The pharmaceutical industry is focussing on the discovery of new antibacterial products after a greater resistance to those already known. Propolis has been used since ancient times, so their effects against various microorganisms have been already investigated. In our study, we evaluated the antimicrobial effect of 6 commercial ethanolic propolis extracts on the bacterium Lactobacillus fermentum. This bacterium was isolated after its identification by Polymerase Chain Reaction using species specific primers, and after...
