Bridging the Gap Between Economics and Ecology Ecology and Society
Leefers, Larry; Michigan State University; leefers@pilot.msu.edu; Castillo, Gem; Michigan State University; Castil16@pilot.msu.edu.
Economics and ecology are often presented as opposing disciplines. Both fields have strengths and weaknesses. A new transdisciplinary field, ecological economics, attempts to bring together the strengths of both disciplines with a vision for a sustainable future. In this paper, we focus on one particular concept championed by ecological economists, natural capital. In particular, our interest is on the institutionalization of this concept through the United Nation's Satellite System for Integrated Environmental and Economic Accounting (SEEA). SEEA is an international convention that incorporates natural resource accounting as a complement to the traditional System of National Accounts (SNA). In the case of boreal forests, the stocks and flows of forest...

Simulation des trajectoires de matière organique dans le Pertuis Breton. Couplage de l'hydrodynamisme et d'un modèle écophysiologique de M. edulis ArchiMer
Pallas Sanz, Enric.
The "Pertuis Breton" is a macrotidal estuary with an important mollusc exploitation of the inter-tidal zones. The main cultivated specie is M.edulis. In 1991, 250 long lines have been immersed in the centre of the bay. It will be able to extend the concession on the basis of the studies results about the trophy capacity of the "Pertuis Breton". Two deterministic models have been developed for to determining the geographical origin of the matter organic sources for the long line mussels culture, and the destine of this matter in the culture park: a) a model of trajectories of the organic matter particles, b) a coupled model of the hydrodynamic conditions and a ecophysiological model of the mussel growth. The result's simulations of the trajectories model...

Investigation on possible chemical pollution of the BouGhraa lagoon south of Tunisia by chemical wastes OceanDocs
Farhat, F.; Ben Aoun, Z.; Chouba, L.; Hadj Ali, M. S..

Effect of Infectious Bursal Disease (Ibd) Vaccines on Infection of Salmonella Heidelberg in Broiler Chickens Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Marín-Gómez,SY; Martins,NRS; Fernando,FS; Coelho,HLG; Freitas Neto,OC.
ABSTRACT Salmonella Heidelberg (SH) has represented a great concern to the Brazilian poultry industry in the last years. It is known that immunosuppression in poultry is a contributing factor to increase Salmonella faecal shedding and to disturb control programmes. Not only infectious bursal disease (IBD) virus but also some live vaccines have been reported to induce immunosuppression. In the present study we assessed the effects of two live vaccines against IBD on SH-infected broiler chicks. At 7 days of age, birds of three groups (vaccinated with recombinant HVT-IBD vector, with immune complex-IBD vaccine and unvaccinated) were orally challenged with 1 x 108 CFU of SH. A group of hatchmates remained unvaccinated/unchallenged to serve as negative...
