Breaking the rule: multiple patterns of scaling of sexual size dimorphism with body size in orthopteroid insects Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Bidau,Claudio J.; Taffarel,Alberto; Castillo,Elio R..
Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) although a widespread phenomenon among animals, is both enigmatic as to its proximate and ultimate causes and the scaling relationships between SSD and body size (Rensch's rule). We analyzed SSD at the intra- and interspecific levels in a number of representative species and genera of the major orthopteroid orders: Orthoptera, Phasmatodea, Mantodea, Blattodea, Dermaptera, Isoptera, and Mantophasmatodea. The vast majority of the species showed female biased SSD but numerous exceptions occur in cockroaches and earwigs. Rensch's rule and its converse are not common patterns at both, intra-and cross-species level, most species and genera showing an isometric relationship between male and female body sizes. In some but not all...

Host range findings on Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) in Argentina Boletín de la Sociedad
Toledo,A. V.; De Remes Lenicov,A. M. M.; López Lastra,C. C..
The natural insect host range of the entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) Beauveria bassiana (Bb) and Metarhizium anisopliae (Ma) was investigated in Argentina during the winter of 2003 through spring of 2004. Fungi- infected insect samples (153) were collected from cornfields and the surrounding uncultivated areas in different localities of Buenos Aires (7), Tucumán (2), and Corrientes (3) provinces. The rates of Bb-infected host range varied among the Coleoptera (37%), Hemiptera (27%) and Dermaptera (1.3%). While the rates of Ma-infected host range varied between the Coleoptera (0.7%) and Hemiptera (34%). The greater host range resulted with B. bassiana found from eight species of Coleoptera (four families), one species of Dermaptera and four species of...

Capacity of earwig Marava arachidis (Yersin) to access fennel plants Foeniculum vulgare Mill in laboratory and field Ciência Rural
Abramson,Charles Ira; Wanderley,Paulo Alves; Miná,Alexandre José Soares; Wanderley,Maria José Araújo.
This research was aimed at obtaining data about earwig behavior (Marava arachidis Y.) on fennel agro-ecosystems and evaluating its potential capacity to access plants in the absence of aphids under laboratory and field conditions. This study establishes a baseline to evaluate earwigs as biological controls to combat aphids that attack fennel plants. Two experiments were developed. In experiment 1, earwigs were studied under laboratory conditions, in experiment 2 under field conditions. Independent variables were sex, exposure to the essential oil of fennel for 24 or 48 hours, and whether the fennel plant was vegetative or flowering. The results indicated that earwigs will climb a fennel plant in the absence of aphids and that few statistical significant...
