Fertility Island Formation and Evolution in Dryland Ecosystems Ecology and Society
Ridolfi, Luca; Politecnico di Torino; luca.ridolfi@polito.it; Laio, Francesco; Politecnico di Torino; francesco.laio@polito.it.
Vast dryland regions around the world are affected by the encroachment of woody vegetation, with important environmental and economical implications. Grassland-to-shrubland conversions are often triggered by disturbance of grassland vegetation, and the consequent formation of barren areas prone to erosion-induced nutrient losses. Inhibition of encroachment by erosion-induced depletion of soil nutrients contributes to the emergence of highly heterogeneous landscapes with shrub-dominated fertility islands surrounded by nutrient-poor bare soil. Here, we develop a process-based simplistic model thataccounts for the two competing processes of resource depletion and shrub encroachment by a non-linear diffusion mechanism. The proposed model is able to generate...

Livestock Subsidies and Rangeland Degradation in Central Crete Ecology and Society
Lorent, Hugues; University of Louvain; hugues.lorent@uclouvain.be; Tsiourlis, Georgios M.; National Agricultural Research Foundation (NAGREF); gmtsiou@fri.gr; Lambin, Eric; University of Louvain; lambin@geog.ucl.ac.be.
Marginal and unstable environmental conditions force stockbreeders in drylands to develop adaptive strategies to ensure stability of production. In intensive market-oriented pastoral systems, the partial substitution of rangeland forage production by external feed increases the influence of commodity prices in stockbreeders’ decisions, which become increasingly decoupled from environmental constraints. In Mediterranean countries of the European Union (EU), Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) subsidies also influence agricultural practices, potentially increasing environmental impacts. By modeling subsidy allocation to sheep and goat breeders in Crete, we showed that livestock subsidies for Less Favoured Areas (LFA) stimulated flock growth up to a...

THE ROLE OF STAKEHOLDERS' INVOLVEMENT TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION: A CASE STUDY IN THE APULIA REGION AgEcon
Maraglino, T.; Ricco, V.; Schiralli, M.; Giordano, R.; Pappagallo, G..
Drought and desertification are largely considered as the major and most complex natural hazards. This is mainly due to the complexity of the web of impacts that ripple through too many sectors causing serious economic, social and environmental consequences. Hence, a wide range of actors are interested by drought effects. Empirical investigations in scientific literature have highlighted the differences between the stakeholder' perceptions of drought and desertification phenomena and the results of scientific – technical evaluation. There is no unique definition of the problem, but each individual has her/his own perception of drought and desertification, which is influenced by previous drought experiences and the mental models used to analyse these...

Benefit Evaluation on the Control Mode for Typical Karst Rocky Desertification in Guizhou Province, China AgEcon
Zuo, Xing-jun; Zuo, Tai-an; Xu, Shu-jian.
Control mode for typical karst rocky desertification in Guizhou Province, China is selected as the research object. The ecological benefit, the social and economic benefit and the popularization prospect of mode are selected as evaluation indices. Evaluation index system of control mode benefits for karst rocky desertification is established. The Dingtan mode and the Wangjiazhai-Yangchangdong small watershed control mode are selected as evaluation objects. Preliminary assessment on the two modes are carried out by Analytic Hierarchy Process, grading evaluation, and comprehensive evaluation method. Result shows that comprehensive score of Dingtan mode is 3.81, which is higher than the score of Wangjiazhai-Yangchangdong small watershed control mode (3.11). In...

Valuing Externalities of Watershed Restoration and Erosion Control Projects in Mediterranean Basins: A Comparative Analysis of the Contingent Valuation and Replacement Cost Methods AgEcon
Saez, Maria Del Carmen Almansa; Calatrava-Requena, Javier.
The methodology used for Economic Valuation of the Externalities generated by the Watershead Restoration and Erosion Control Projects in the Hydrographic Basins of the Mediterranean Slope, is based on the Replacement Cost Method. Environmental Economics, however, today offer us other methodological possibilities, whose application to the valuation of this type of project may prove to be of interest. It is the case of the Contingent Valuation Method used for the evaluation of the effects of the Watershead Restoration and Erosion Control Projects of the Aljibe Basin (Almería) Spain, presented here. The results obtained show that, in this case study, application of Contingent Valuation ascribes greater social profitability of the project, with 5.23 % of IRR...

The Impact of Environmental Policy on Household Income and Activity Choice: Evidence from Sandstorm Source Control Program in North China AgEcon
Zhang, Wei; Liu, Can.
This paper uses household data to assess the near-term impact of the program on incomes and activity choices of rural households in areas where the sandstorm control program (Beijing and Tianjin Sandstorm Source Control Program) was implemented. Central to our analysis is a unique panel survey conducted by the State Forestry Administration covering years from 1998 to 2003 in 17 counties in three Northern provinces Hebei, Shanxi, and Inner Mongolia (autonomous region). The essential feature of the program is an annual subsidy provided to participating farmers to cover costs associated with permanent retirement of farm land and the planting of saplings. We first look at the impact of program participation on household incomes and, not surprisingly, observe...

Use of remote sensing to identify areas at risk of degradation in the semi-arid region Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Aquino,Deodato do Nascimento; Rocha Neto,Odílio Coimbra da; Moreira,Maurício Alves; Teixeira,Adunias dos Santos; Andrade,Eunice Maia de.
ABSTRACT One of the most effective procedures in the evaluation of degraded areas has been the use of remote sensing. The aim of this work was to evaluate the temporal dynamics of the NDVI and rainfall in detecting the degradation of natural resources in a semi-arid region of Brazil. The area under study is located to the west of the district of Tauá, in the State of Ceará, with a predominance of shrub-like caatinga forest. Rainfall data was obtained from FUNCEME. Ten images (dry season) were acquired from a 27-year historical series (1985-2011) from the TM/LANDSAT5 sensor, later converted to surface reflectance using the FLAASH/ENVI extension; NDVI indices were obtained and divided into six classes corresponding to land usage and occupation. The mean...

Phytomass mapping of the "seridó caatinga" vegetation by the plant area and the normalized difference vegetation indeces Scientia Agricola
Costa,Thomaz Corrêa e Castro da; Accioly,Luciano José de Oliveira; Oliveira,Maria Ap. José de; Burgos,Nivaldo; Silva,Flávio Hugo Barreto Batista da.
Phytomass is a critical information for economic and environmental activities like the establishment of policies for timber resources, forest management, studies of plant nutrient cycling, CO2 sink, among other. The phytomass of a Caatinga area was obtained by an empirical method using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of Landsat images, the plant area index (PAI) and the phytomass inventory. At a first stage, linear, logarithmic and non-linear models were developed and tested. Bush and tree specimens were considered in the study, so that most of the individuals that contribute to the spectral answer detected by satellite images were included. At a second stage, the orbital parameter NDVI was used to map the PAI, which was used to map the...
