Radiographic image analysis of Anacardium othonianum Rizz (anacardiaceae) achenes subjected to desiccation Agronomy
Silva, Lílian Abadia da; Sales, Juliana de Fátima; Neves, José Maria Gomes; Santos, Heloísa Oliveira dos; Silva, Glicélia Pereira.
Studies evaluating the internal morphology and seed quality of native species are essential for successful conservation programs. Our aim was to verify the efficiency of X-ray imagery in evaluating cashew-tree-of-the-cerrado (Anacardium othonianum Rizz.) achene viability after desiccation. The achenes were collected at 12% water content (w.b.) and dried in silica gel until they reached 10, 8, 6, and 4% (w.b.). The fruit morphology and the quality of the seeds were evaluated by X-ray test together with vigor, electrical conductivity and emergence tests. Achenes with different water contents were exposed to an X-ray machine at 18 kV for 11 s and were thereafter submitted to emergence tests. The images were analyzed, and the achenes were classified based on...

Softening in pistachio kernels during ultrasonic desiccation CIGR Journal
Kouchakzadeh, Ahmad.
Changes in Young’s modulus of pistachio kernels after ultrasonic desiccation were examined.  Young’s modulus in ultrasonic dried nuts (6.3% to 8.0% d.b.) rises from 27 to 35 MPa within 150 W to 300 W ultrasonic powers.  The sun dried modulus values were roughly greater than 70 MPa and a consistent trend like acoustic dried could not be observed.  These results showed the acoustic softening is accrued when the pistachio kernels are exposed to ultrasonic vibration.  Kernels could not maintain its hardness so the Young’s modulus decreased rather than sun dried.

Increasing the rate of drying reduces metabolic imbalance, lipid peroxidation and critical water content in radicles of garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) Biol. Res.
Ntuli,Tobias M; Pammenter,Norman W; Berjak,Patricia.
Orthodox seeds become desiccation-sensitive as they undergo germination. As a result, germinating seeds serve as a model to study desiccation sensitivity in plant tissues. The effects of the rate of drying on the viability, respiratory metabolism and free radical processes were thus studied during dehydration and wet storage of radicles of Pisum sativum. For both drying regimes desiccation could be described by exponential and inverse modified functions. Viability, as assessed by germination capacity and tetrazolium staining, remained at 100% during rapid (< 24 h) desiccation. However, it declined sharply at c. 0.26 g g¹ dm following slow (c. 5 days) drying. Increasing the rate of dehydration thus lowered the critical water content for survival. Rapid...

Desiccation tolerance in seeds of Annona emarginata (Schldtl.) H. Rainer and action of plant growth regulators on germination Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Corsato,Jaqueline Malagutti; Ferreira,Gisela; Barbedo,Claudio Jose.
Annona emarginata (Schldtl.) H. Rainer ("araticum-de-terra-fria") is used as a rootstock for several species of Annonaceae. It is suggested that these seeds should be sown immediately after extraction and, therefore, they could be intolerant to desiccation. There are several mechanisms involved with desiccation tolerance. Soluble sugars, for example, can accumulate and act as osmoprotectants for the membrane system during desiccation. The aim of this study is to assess desiccation tolerance in A. emarginata seeds. In addition, we examined the soluble sugars involved in desiccation tolerance. Finally, we determined the effect of gibberellic acid (GA4+7) and N-(phenylmethyl)-aminopurine in promoting the germination of seeds with different water contents. The...

Shore-level size gradients and thermal refuge use in the predatory sea star Pisaster ochraceus: the role of environmental stressors ArchiMer
Monaco, Cristian; Wethey, David S.; Gulledge, Shadow; Helmuth, Brian.
The body size of a mobile intertidal invertebrate can determine its access to different microhabitats, and thus alter its exposure to environmental stressors. We surveyed a rocky intertidal keystone predator, the sea star Pisaster ochraceus, and characterized size-dependent distribution, defined by individuals' shore level and refuge use. At 2 field sites (in California and Oregon, USA) we examined temporal and geographical variability in habitat selection. We evaluated the hypothesis that environmental drivers measured on-site and body temperatures measured using biomimetic sensors (i.e. 'robo-sea stars'), explained the observed distribution patterns, including shore-level size gradients, with larger animals lower on the shore. We tested the effect of...

Some methods for quantifying quality in the scallop Pecten maximus (L.) ArchiMer
Maguire, Julie A.; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Burnell, Gavin M..
(Not controled OCR) Because biological systems do not work in isolation, behavioral, biochemical, and physiological tests can give an overview of an individual's vital processes and reaction to stress. Two stress gradients were applied in this study, a short acute desiccation stress and a long-term density stress. These stress gradients were used to assess the usefulness of various techniques for quality assessment: namely, a standard salinity stress test, condition index, recessing speed of the scallop, adenylic energetic charge (AEC). and percentage carbohydrate content of the striated muscle. The results showed that AEC could be used effectively to measure the effect of a short-term stress. In the striated muscle. AEC levels were useful in...

Sensitivity of brazilian-pine (Araucária angustifolia) embryos to desiccation and temperature PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Medeiros, Antonio Carlos de Souza; Walters, Cristina; Hill, Lisa.
The “recalcitrant” behavior of Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Kuntze seeds (Brazilian pine) limits the conservation of genetic resources of this important species in ex situ genebanks. As initial steps in developing storage protocols, we studied the interaction of water content and temperature on embryo survival. Embryos were excised from seeds and “flash-dried” to water contents as low as 0.29 g water/g dry mass and then exposed to 0°C, -5°C and -18°C for 4 h. Drying rate was calculated from drying time courses and expressed as (g water / g dry weight) / hour. Other authors have studied the effects of desiccation of whole seed of A. angustifolia on viability. In order to compare moisture content of whole seeds to that of embryonic axes, seeds of A....

Flash-drying for embryos desiccation PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Medeiros, Antonio Carlos de Souza; Abreu, Daniela Cleide Azevedo de.
Seeds of several tree species from Brazilian wet forest are in dangerous situation and show recalcitrant characteristics. Therefore, it is not possible to store them by traditional methods adopted with orthodox seeds and it limits their genetic resources ex-situ conservation in seed banks. This situation encourages researches to find news technologies in order to store these species in genebanks. Therein, flash-drying method for embryos desiccation shows to be a promising technique in order to resolve seed conservation of Brazilian endogenous tree species in genebanks. This paper has an objective of to become known the flash-drying technique and to be accessible to seed  physiologists

Chemical control of different Digitaria insularis populations and management of a glyphosate-resistant population Planta Daninha
CORREIA,N.M.; ACRA,L.T.; BALIEIRO,G..
This study aimed to control different populations of Digitaria insularisby glyphosate herbicide, isolated and mixed, besides the combination of methods (chemical and mechanical) to manage resistant adult plants. Three experiments were conducted, one in pots which were maintained under non-controlled conditions and two under field conditions. In the experiment in pots, twelve populations of D. insularis were sprayed with isolated glyphosate (1.44 and 2.16 kg a.e. ha-1) and mixed (1.44 and 2.16 kg a.e. ha-1) with quizalofop-p tefuryl (0.12 kg i.a. ha-1). The treatment of 1.44 kg a.e. ha-1 of glyphosate plus 0.12 kg a.i. ha-1 of quizalofop was sufficient for adequate control (>95%) of all populations. Population 11 (area of grain production in Itumbiara,...

Weed suppression in the formation of brachiarias under three sowing methods Planta Daninha
Lima,S.F.; Timossi,P.C.; Almeida,D.P.; Silva,U.R..
The success of conservation systems such as no-till depends on adequate soil cover throughout the year, which is possible through the use of cover crops. For this purpose the species belonging to the genus Urochloa has stood out by virtue of its hardiness and tolerance to drought. Aiming ground cover for the no-till system, the objective was to evaluate the establishment of two species of the genus Urochloa, in three sowing methods, in the weed suppression and the sensitivity of these forages to glyphosate. The study design was a randomized block with a 2 x 3 x 3 factorial arrangement, in which factor A was composed of Urochloa ruziziensis and Urochloa hybrid CIAT 36087 cv. Mulato II, factor B was formed by sowing methods: sown without embedding, sown with...

Drying and germination of cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum (willd. Ex Spreng.) K. Schum.) seeds Rev. bras. sementes
Cruz,Eniel David.
The objective of this study was to verify the effect of drying on germination of cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum (Willd. ex Spreng) K. Schum.) seeds. Desiccation was in forced air oven, with temperature ranging from 23 to 33ºC. Sowing was carried out at 0.5cm of depth in plastic trays in sand and sawdust mixture (1:1), previously sterilized in hot water (100ºC), during 2h. Seeds were left to germinate in a laboratory with no temperature and relative humidity control, under natural light. It was quantified the seed moisture content, in four replications of 10 seeds; the germination percentage, performed during 30 days, with daily counts of the number of germinated seeds; the germination speed index; and number of days to the germination onset. The...

Locomotion of Stramonita haemastoma (Linnaeus) (Gastropoda, Muricidae) on a mixed shore of rocks and sand Zoologia
Papp,Marcos G.; Duarte,Luiz F.L..
Mixed shores of rocks and sand are appropriate systems for the study of limitations that the isolation of rocks may impose for gastropods that typically inhabit rocky shores. We marked 52 Stramonita haemastoma (Linnaeus, 1767) snails on a mixed shore and found that 34 of them moved between rocks one to four times during 15 surveys in a period of 72 days. In the experiments, the snails moved on rock by continuous, direct, ditaxic, alternate undulations of the foot sole but on submerged sand they used slower arrhythmic discontinuous contractions of the foot sole. They switched between modes of locomotion in response to the type and topography of the substrate and possibly to water dynamics. In nature, snails moved between rocks forming aggregations where...
