Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) associated with machine learning algorithms (ML) was used to evaluate the Brachiaria seed physiological quality by discriminating the high and low vigor seeds. A 23 factorial design was used to optimize the LIBS experimental parameters for spectral analysis. A total of 120 samples from two distinct cultivars of Brachiaria brizantha seeds exhibiting high vigor (HV) and low vigor (LV) in standard tests were studied. The raw LIBS spectra were normalized and submitted to outlier verification, previously to the reduction data dimensionality from principal component analysis. Supervised machine learning algorithm parameters were chosen by leave-oneout cross-validation in the test samples, and it was tested by external... |

Reproducibility of the tablet manufacturing process and control of its pharmaceutics properties depends on the optimization of formulation aspects and process parameters. Computer simulation such as Design of Experiments (DOE) can be used to scale up the production of this formulation, in particular for obtaining sustained-release tablets. Bromopride formulations are marketed in the form of extended-release pellets, which makes the product more expensive and difficult to manufacture. The aim of this study was to formulate new bromopride sustained release formulations as tablets, and to develop mathematical models to standardize the scale up of this formulation, controlling weight and hardness of the tablets during manufacture according to the USP 34th... |

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the impact on digestibility and physical properties of enteral formulas by the addition of variable ingredients. Eight formulas were designed by a simplex-centroid evaluating different concentrations of inulin, medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) and whey protein isolate (WPI). Overall, the eight formulas developed presented mean values of 17.3% of protein, 62.3% of carbohydrates, 11.5% of lipids, a caloric value of 420 kcal/100 g, thus obtaining nutritionally adequate formulas. The emulsion stability of the suspended formulas was affected by all ingredients and the interactions between MCT – inulin, and MCT – WPI were effective in improving this parameter. Besides that, the use of inulin mostly affected the protein... |

AbstractThis study aimed to evaluate the effect of the distillation time and the sample mass on the total SO2 content in integral passion fruit juice (Passiflora sp). For the SO2 analysis, a modified version of the Monier-Williams method was used. In this experiment, the distillation time and the sample mass were reduced to half of the values proposed in the original method. The analyses were performed in triplicate for each distilling time x sample mass binomial, making a total of 12 tests, which were performed on the same day. The significance of the effects of the different distillation times and sample mass were evaluated by applying one-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA). For a 95% confidence limit, it was found that the proposed amendments to the... |

ABSTRACT The objective was to study the starch extraction process of the peach palm (Bactris gasipaes Kunth.) fruit focused on increasing yield and in preserving the quality characteristics the extracted product. Two experimental designs are carried out in order to investigate the effects of NaOH and NaHSO3 concentrations, as well as the decantation time, on the yield of starch and on product color. Firstly, a 23 full factorial design provided a linear model with 95% of confidence, indicating major tendencies for optimization. Secondly, a 22 central composite design rendered a quadratic model which allowed the maximization of yield (it 9.0% higher) without compromising the color of the product. The maximum yield of 23.90%, validated with triplicate... |

Headspace technique is a common method to analyze light hydrocarbons in deep marine sediments. The use of an automatic headspace sampler instead of a manual injection is the guarantee for a better repeatability and furthermore it is less time consuming. But to increase the sensitivity and therefore, to achieve a better detection limit, it is necessary to optimize the automatic headspace sampler parameters. The theory of design of experiments was applied here by studying them. As a response, methane, which is an important gas in marine sediments, was chosen for its short analysis time. Regarding the parameters for automatic headspace sampler, eight variables were selected and then, a screening of them was carried out with a fractional factorial design to... |
