This study aims to give an overall view of fruit structure in Bromeliaceae, since these studies are extremely scarce in this family, showing the morphology, anatomy and ontogeny of fruits of six species belonging to six different genera, representing three subfamilies. All species studied have a tricarpellary and trilocular ovary, with an obturator covering the placental region. Dyckia maritima, Pitcairnia flammea, Tillandsia aeranthos and Vriesea carinata have capsular fruits (septicidal or biscidal), characterized mainly by the presence of macrosclereids in the exocarp or endocarp, fibers in the ventral region of the carpels, six dehiscence lines and three vascular bundles in each carpel. Aechmea calyculata and Billbergia nutans have fruits classified as... |

We evaluated the phytotoxic effects that the hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts from leaves and branches of the species Turnera ulmifolia L. and Turnera diffusa Willd. ex Schult. (Turneraceae), at concentrations of 1.25, 2.50, 3.75 and 5.00 mg ml-1, have on seed germination and seedling development in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.). None of the extracts tested prevented germination, although the ethyl acetate extracts of T. diffusa, at 3.75 and 5.00 mg ml-1, reduced the mean germination speed and time to germination. Hexane extracts of both species reduced the main root length, number of secondary roots and hypocotyl length. In the ethyl acetate and methanol extracts, the number of secondary roots and hypocotyl length varied by species and... |

Potato is one of the most important agricultural products that has great nutritional and industrial value. Potato seed tubers are usually used for growing this crop, but separating the seed tubers from the edible ones is tedious, time consuming and costly process. Therefore, a rotating potato sorting machine was designed, developed and evaluated in this research. This machine was able to sort potato tubers according to their size. Effects of sieves slope angle and rotational speed on the tubers mechanical damage, sorting accuracy and capacity of designed machine were evaluated. The test was conducted in the factorial experiment format with three replications based on a completely randomized experimental design. Three levels of sieves slope angle (5, 10 and... |

ABSTRACTThere is an inevitable decline in quality value of ascorbic acid in storage and distribution of cashew apple juice. The quality value and maximum shelf life of yellow sample of cashew apple juice were estimated and the quality value model based on the deteriorative factors was developed. It was discovered that balancing these factors led to satisfactory quality control of ascorbic acid degradation in cashew fruit juice during non refrigeration storage conditions and the distribution. Data were drawn from 34 full factorial experiments conducted in three replicates with the order of the replicates randomized. A multivariate regression analysis was used for relating the variables. The results of the experiment and the model developed for yellow... |

Agricultural insurance is one of the important tools that help farmers gain access to appropriate financial services in support of agricultural production and to face some of the involved risks. The present article presents a detailed evaluation of the functioning system of the agricultural insurance system. Assessing the participation of the Algerian Caisse de Mutualité Agricole, in the current rate of agricultural development. This institution of agricultural mutuality, with its national fund and its regional mutuals, is likely to be affected by several changes or even to be surpassed by other companies competing on the insurance market. An analysis was conducted in insurance companies and farmers to probe the reality on the ground and identify... |

This study aimed to evaluate the biotic potential, life table parameters and fertility of Spodoptera albula (Walker, 1857) under controlled conditions (25 ± 1°C, 70 ± 10% RH and 14 hour photo phase). The longevity, pre, post and oviposition periods, fecundity and fertility of 13 couples were evaluated. The longevity of females (13.500 days) was significantly higher than those of males (11.154 days). The mean durations of the pre, post and oviposition periods were 2.615, 1.769 and 9.385 days, respectively. The mean fecundity was 1.417.69 eggs and mean fertility was 1.340.401 larvae, per female. On average, females copulated 1, 231 times. A strong positive correlation was observed between the number of copulations and fecundity (r = 0.847, p <0.001), as... |

This study aimed to detail the temporal and morphological parameters of the immature stages of Spodoptera albula (Walker 1857) under controlled conditions (25 ± 1°C, 70 ± 10% RH and 14 hour photophase) and to gather information about their larval host plants. For this purpose, a new rearing method and artificial diet was employed and validated. The viability of the egg, larval, pupal and pre-pupal stages was 94.54, 97.33, 93.84 and 92.34%, respectively. The average duration of the egg, larval, pupal and pre-pupal stages was 4.14, 16.37, 1.69, and 9.34 days, respectively. During the larval stage, 80.85% of females and 93.99% of males passed through six and remaining through seven instars, with significant larval protandry. The larvae that developed through... |

This study aims to analyze the maturation and dispersal of Eugenia pyriformis Cambess. seeds produced in different years, and the influence of variation in thermal and hydric environment on seed physical and physiological characteristics at dispersal. Fruits at different developmental stages were harvested in the city of São Paulo between 2003 and 2010, as well as in the cities of Campinas and Lavras, in 2009 and 2010 and analyzed for size and color. The seeds were extracted from the fruits and their dry mass, water content, germination and vigor were assessed. Results showed that seed maturation is unsynchronized to the maturation of the fruit, taking 45 days on average (430 growing degree-days), longer in rainy times or lower temperatures. Seeds with... |
