Prediction of hybrid means from a partial circulant diallel table using the ordinary least square and the mixed model methods Genet. Mol. Biol.
Reis,Américo José dos Santos; Chaves,Lázaro José; Duarte,João Batista; Brasil,Edward Madureira.
By definition, the genetic effects obtained from a circulant diallel table are random. However, because of the methods of analysis, those effects have been considered as fixed. Two different statistical approaches were applied. One assumed the model to be fixed and obtained solutions through the ordinary least square (OLS) method. The other assumed a mixed model and estimated the fixed effects (BLUE) by generalized least squares (GLS) and the best linear unbiased predictor (BLUP) of the random effects. The goal of this study was to evaluate the consequences when considering these effects as fixed or random, using the coefficient of correlation between the responses of observed and non-observed hybrids. Crossings were made between S1 inbred lines from two...

Rodrigues,Rosana; Gonçalves,Leandro SA; Bento,Cintia dos S; Sudré,Claudia P; Robaina,Renata R; Amaral Júnior,Antonio T do.
The Capsicum breeding has been developed with emphasis in bell pepper (Capsicum annuum) and few studies are available in other species, especially C. baccatum, which has potential use not only as disease resistance source but also in obtaining new genotypes suitable for farmers' production. In the present work, the combining ability of ten C. baccatum hybrids, along with their five parentals, were tested considering 12 agronomic traits. The hybrids were produced from a complete diallel without reciprocals and assessed in greenhouse conditions, in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, during the period July to December 2009. The experimental design was a randomized block with three replications and the following agronomic traits evaluated:...

Agronomic evaluation and combining ability of tomato inbred lines selected for the industrial segment Horticultura Brasileira
Figueiredo,Alex ST; Resende,Juliano TV; Faria,Marcos V; Paula,Juliana T; Rizzardi,Diego A; Meert,Leandro.
ABSTRACT: This study carried out agronomic evaluation and estimated the combining ability of tomato lines for the industrial segment, aiming to elect promising genotypes for breeding and to find simple hybrids with superior traits. Randomized-blocks design was used with 57 treatments (45 experimental hybrids, 10 lines and 2 checks treatments) with 3 replications. A complete diallel among 10 tomato lines for processing was used. Evaluated traits were: fruit total (YT) and commercial production (YC), pulp yield (YP), fruit average mass (MM) and total soluble solids content (TSS). Diallel crosses allowed synthesizing experimental hybrids with superior traits when compared to commercial hybrids. Non-additive effects prevailed over the expression of YT, YC, YP...

General and specific combining ability in tropical winter cauliflower Horticultura Brasileira
Arashida,Felipe M; Maluf,Wilson R; Carvalho,Regis C.
ABSTRACT Few Brazilian cauliflower cultivars have shown to be adapted to tropical winter conditions. In addition, studies to obtain hybrids adapted to our winter conditions, from breeding lines originating from tropical regions, are scarce. The objective of this work was to estimate the combining ability of cauliflower breeding lines. The experiment comprised 38 genotypes, 36 hybrids from a partial diallel cross obtained by crosses between two groups of cauliflower lines: Group I (3 parents) and Group II (12 parents) and 2 commercial controls. We evaluated plant cycle, resistance to diseases, average curd mass, curd color, hollow stalk incidence, and overall evaluation. Additive genetic effects were more important than non-additive effects in the...

Prospecting of tomato hybrids for table and industry via mixed modeling and multivariate analysis Horticultura Brasileira
Amaral Júnior,Antonio T; Graça,António JP; Vivas,Marcelo; Viana,Alexandre P; Rodrigues,Rosana.
ABSTRACT Dual-purpose tomato breeding, for table and industry, has great importance for tomato production and strong impact on Brazilian socioeconomic development. In the present study, we used the methodology of mixed models to estimate the combinatorial ability of five tomato lines evaluated in complete diallel scheme without reciprocal, and cluster analysis to prospect new double and triple hybrids constitutions. Thus, we observed that positive values of general combining ability occur in ‘B13LD’, ‘Viradoro’ and ‘Rio Grande’ (for fruit firmness), ‘B13LD’, ‘Castone’ and ‘Massag-72’ (for soluble solids content); and ‘Viradoro’ and ‘Rio Grande’ (for productivity). The crosses ‘B13LD x Rio Grande’ and ‘Massag-72 x Viradoro’ showed positive estimates of...

Combining ability and heterosis in common bean cultivars PAB
Gonçalves-Vidigal,Maria Celeste; Silvério,Lucas; Elias,Haroldo Tavares; Vidigal Filho,Pedro Soares; Kvitschal,Marcus Vinícius; Retuci,Vanessa Silva; Silva,Claudete Rosa da.
The objective of this work was to determine the combining ability and heterosis, for productivity and yield components, in diallel hybrids derived from crossings between BRSMG-Talismã, IPR Uirapuru, FT Soberano, BRS Campeiro, IAC Tybatã, and IPR Juriti parent cultivars. Fifteen hybrids were generated from diallel crosses, excluding reciprocals. The general and specific combining abilities were significant for plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, number of seeds per pod, 50-seed weight, and grain yield, indicating the occurrence of both additive and nonadditive genetic effects. The best strategy to be adopted is the use of BRS Campeiro, FT Soberano and BRSMG-Talismã cultivars in common bean breeding programs involving...

Combining ability of maize inbred lines evaluated in three environments in Brazil Scientia Agricola
Nass,Luciano Lourenço; Lima,Marlene; Vencovsky,Roland; Gallo,Paulo Boller.
For tropical areas like Brazil, genotype x environment interaction is an important source of variation. Our objectives were to examine the combining abilities and their interaction with environments in ten selected maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines in diallel crosses and to identify candidates for promising hybrid combinations. Crosses and checks were evaluated through a 7 x 7 triple lattice design at three locations during the 1984/85 season. Several agronomic traits were evaluated, but here only data on ear yield are discussed. Yield data were adjusted for stand variation (correction to 50 plants per plot) and grain moisture (15.5%). Data for ear yield were analysed using an adaptation of Griffing’s method IV for complete diallel crosses, and experiments...

Stock-scion interactions on growth and rubber yield of Hevea brasiliensis Scientia Agricola
Cardinal,Átila Bento Beleti; Gonçalves,Paulo de Souza; Martins,Antônio Lúcio Mello.
Rubber tree cultivation [Hevea brasiliensis (Willd. ex Adr. de Juss.) Muell.-Arg.] uses mostly the budding propagation method, however the expected stand uniformity due to the use of vegetative propagation is theoretical, since high variation for yield and vigor is caused by rootstock influence. The objective of this study was to assess several combinations between clonal rootstocks and clone scions through diallel analysis, aiming at high productivity and vigor. Data consisted of five years of dry rubber yield and girth at panel opening from an experiment using a split-plot design with four replications, conducted at Pindorama, SP, Brazil, considering six rootstocks (GT 1, IAN 873, PB 235, RRIM 600, RRIM 701 and unselected seedlings) and six scions (GT 1,...

BARELLI,MARCO ANTONIO APARECIDO; GONÇALVES-VIDIGAL,MARIA CELESTE; AMARAL JÚNIOR,ANTONIO TEIXEIRA DO; VIDIGAL FILHO,PEDRO SOARES; SCAPIM,CARLOS ALBERTO.
Eight morpho-agronomic traits have been measured in six common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars and their 15 hybrids aiming to estimate parents potential per se and heterotic effects of hybrid combinations (Gardner and Ebehart's method, 1966). Enough variability has bees detected among the parents for most of the studied characters. Excepting first pod insertion height the results have shown a great deal of complementation for the scored traits. Hybrids LPSPI 93-17 x FT Nobre and LPSPI 93-19 x FT Nobre have revealed the highest chances of selecting for earlier plant emergence and flowering cycle; on the other hand, 'LPSPI 93-17', 'Ápore', 'Rudá' and 'Campeão-1' have presented high potentials per se, as well as in hybrid combinations, for grain...

Genetic control on the performance of common bean differential cultivars to Colletotrichum lindemuthianum races BABT
Gonçalves-Vidigal,Maria Celeste; Bonett,Lucimar Pereira; Vidigal Filho,Pedro Soares; Gonela,Adriana; Ribeiro,Aliny Simony.
The aim of this work was to perform genetic control on differential cultivars Michelite, Michigan Dark Red Kidney, Perry Marrow, Cornell 49-242, PI 207262, AB 136 and G 2333 and its diallel hybrids by using Hayman's methodology. The entire F1s populations were evaluated in relation to race 89, whereas the race 31, the diallel scheme did not include the cultivar G 2333. The results showed that the additive effects were predominant for the 31 race, while non-additive effects were more important for race 89. The results demonstrated a high coefficient of genetic determination for the race 31. The G 2333, AB 136 and PI 207262 cultivars should be recommended obtaining cultivar resistant to anthracnose by backcross programs because theyshowed the highest...

Diallel analysis of the combining ability of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars BABT
Barelli,Marco Antônio Aparecido; Gonçalves-Vidigal,Maria Celeste; Amaral Júnior,Antonio Teixeira do; Vidigal Filho,Pedro Soares; Scapim,Carlos Alberto.
Six common bean cultivars (LPSPI 93-17, LPSPI 93-19, FT-Nobre, Aporé, Rudá and Campeão-1) and their 15 diallel hybrids were evaluated for four agronomic characteristics using Griffing's methodology (1956). The analysis indicated the predominance of non-additive gene effects for days to germination and plant height. The mean number of days to flowering and mean height of the first pod insertion were predominantly controlled by genes showing additive effects. The results showed that LPSI 93-19 and Aporé were indicated for intra-population breeding, while the combinations LPSPI 93-17 x FT-Nobre, LPSPI 93-17 x Aporé, LPSPI 93-17 x Rudá, LPSPI 93-19 x Campeão-1, FT-Nobre x Aporé and Rudá x Campeão-1 were indicated for interpopulational breeding. Plants with...

Genetic control on morphoagzronomic traits in snap bean BABT
Silva,Marlon Peres da; Amaral Júnior,Antônio Teixeira do; Rodrigues,Rosana; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga; Viana,Alexandre Pio.
Five divergent snap bean accessions from the vegetables germplasm bank at UENF and their ten diallel hybrids were evaluated to inheritance on five morphoagronomic traits using Hayman's methodology (1954). The results showed that additive effects were predominant for pod weight per plant, number of seeds per pod, height of the insertion of the first pod and number of days to flowering while non-additive effects were more important for number of pods per plant. The best strategy to be adopted was the use of these acessions in an intrapopulation breeding program aiming the obtaintion of superior segregants. For pod numbers the indicated strategy would be an interpopulational breeding procedure, to exploite the heterosis related to the non-additive effects....

Gene effect and heterosis in Capsicum baccatum var. pendulum Ciência Rural
Medeiros,Artur Mendes; Rodrigues,Rosana; Gonçalves,Leandro Simões Azeredo; Sudré,Cláudia Pombo; Oliveira,Hérica Santos de; Santos,Marilene Hilma dos.
Heterosis has been exploited in Capsicum annuum commercial hybrids; however, the use of heterosis in C. baccatum still remains to be explored, and studies related to the genetics and breeding of this species are scarce. The present study aimed to estimate the combining ability of five parents of C. baccatum var. pendulum , representatives of two distinct types of fruits (namely, lady's finger and cambuci), to calculate heterosis and to evaluate the agronomic potential of the hybrids for yield and fruit quality. The hybrids were produced from a complete diallel without reciprocals. The parents and hybrids were evaluated under field conditions in a randomized block design with three replications, and the following traits were assessed: number of fruits per...

Correlations and selection of parents to technological traits of upland cotton Ciência Rural
Carvalho,Luiz Paulo de; Farias,Francisco José Correia; Rodrigues,Josiane Isabela Silva; Castro,Katiane Secco; Zuffo,Alan Mario; Teodoro,Paulo Eduardo.
ABSTRACT: Technological traits improvement of cotton fiber is a constant demand by textile industry. This research aimed to identify the potential of improved materials with high lint percentage to contribute with alleles that increase the lint percentage in Extra long staple fiber (ELS) upland cotton. Two contrasting materials for lint percentage (LP) and fiber length (FL) were used, one with long fiber and a low lint percentage (parent A) and another with high lint percentage and medium length (parent B). The following variables were evaluated: lint percentage (LP), upper half mean length (UHML), fiber uniformity (FU), fiber strength (FS), and elongation (EL). Diallel analysis was performed using the Griffing’s Method 4 adapted to partial diallel....
