Intoxikation durch marine Biotoxine ArchiMer
Hess, Philipp.
This paper presents a short summary of the knowledge on marine biotoxins. As toxins are known for their acute effects, they have been classified here according to the effects they cause in acute human poisoning incidents. Toxins may thus be distinguished into those that affect the nervous system (paralytic and other neurotoxins), memory (amnesic poisons), and the digestive system (diarrhetic toxins). Furthermore, newly emerging toxins, such as ciguatoxins or shark toxins, and factors that lead to the introduction of toxins in new areas, are presented. Relevant suggestions for further reading are given.

Dietary fiber and zinc additives on performance and intestinal health of Escherichia coli challenged piglets Scientia Agricola
Fernandes,Carolina Dias; Resende,Maíra; Rodrigues,Letícia Mendonça; Garbossa,Cesar Augusto Pospissil; Costa,Leandro Batista; Ferreira,Rony Antônio; Abreu,Márvio Lobão Teixeira de; Cantarelli,Vinícius Souza.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effects of zinc oxide and a low level of encapsulated zinc oxide, with or without dietary fiber, on the performance and intestinal health of weaned piglets. A total of 112 piglets were used, divided into four treatment groups: basal diet with zinc oxide (ZnO); basal diet with zinc oxide and dietary fiber (ZnO+DF); basal diet with encapsulated low zinc oxide (LZnOE); and basal diet with LZnOE and DF (LZnOE+DF). Piglets were challenged with E . coli K88 + , weighed weekly and the fecal score was evaluated daily. One pig per pen was slaughtered to evaluate the production of volatile fatty acids, intestinal microbial populations, intestinal morphology, and digestibility. The encapsulated zinc resulted in lower body...

Sensibilidade antimicrobiana de amostras de Escherichia coli isoladas de leitões com diarréia após o desmame BABT
Brito,Benito Guimarães de; Tagliari,Kelly Cristina.
The main infectious agent responsible by post-weaning diarrhoea in piglets is the Escherichia coli and the therapy by drugs is used for control of this disease. The antimicrobial sensitivity of 66 strains of Escherichia coli isolated from piglets with post-weaning diarrhoea was studied. The results show high resistance at four drugs (streptomycin, sulfonamide, tetracycline and chloramphenicol). Gentamycin and neomycin were the best antimicrobial in the inhibition of strains of Escherichia coli, isolated from piglets with post-weaning diarrhoea, in the southwest of Paraná.

Identification of enteropathogens from buffalo calves with and without diarrhoea in the Ribeira Valley, State of São Paulo, Brazil Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
RIBEIRO,Márcio Garcia; LANGONI,Hélio; JEREZ,José Antônio; LEITE,Domingos da Silva; FERREIRA,Fernando; GENNARI,Solange Maria.
Faecal samples of 106 buffalo calves aged 3 to 45 days were collected sequentially, once a week, during six weeks for parasitologic examination. For bacteriologic and virologic exams, faecal samples were collected from all diarrhoeic and the same amount on non-diarrhoeic calves. Blood samples from calves were collected at 3 to 10 days of age for serum IgG determination. Eimeria spp, Strongyloides papillosus and Toxocara vitulorum were the most common parasites. E. coli, Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella pneumoniae were the enteropathogens most frequently found (alone or in association with other microrganisms). Heat-stable (STa) enterotoxin was detected in 5 out of 34 samples of E. coli isolated from diarrhoeic calves. Among the antimicrobials tested...

Colicin type 7 produced by majority of Shigella sonnei isolated from Thai patients with diarrhoea BJM
Kaewklom,Siriporn; Samosornsuk,Seksun; Pipatsatitpong,Duangnate; Aunpad,Ratchaneewan.
Thirty one out of 153 strains of Shigella sonnei isolated from Thai patients with diarrhoea showed antibacterial activity against S. sonnei by agar well diffusion method. All of them harbor plasmids with the genetic determination of colicin type 7 (Js) gene but without colicin E and colicin U gene. The PCR product obtained from strain 35/44 was shown to be the gene for colicin type 7 lytic protein (cja). The partially purified bacteriocin (PPB) containing colicin type 7 of strain 35/44 was prepared and used for characterization. The antibacterial activity of PPB against a total of 17 selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was tested. It was found that PPB of strain 35/44 was active against E. coli O157, S. sonnei and S. boydii. The sensitivity...

Adherence and virulence genes of Escherichia colifrom children diarrhoea in the Brazilian Amazon BJM
Benevides-Matos,Najla; Pieri,Fabio A.; Penatti,Marilene; Orlandi,Patrícia P..
The bacterial pathogen most commonly associated with endemic forms of childhood diarrhoea is Escherichia coli. Studies of epidemiological characteristics of HEp-2 cell-adherent E. coli in diarrhoeal disease are required, particularly in developing countries. The aim of this study was evaluate the presence and significance of adherent Escherichia coli from diarrhoeal disease in children. The prevalence of LA, AA, and DA adherence patterns were determined in HEp-2 cells, the presence of virulence genes and the presence of the O serogroups in samples obtained from 470 children with acute diarrhoea and 407 controls in Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brazil. E. coli isolates were identified by PCR specific for groups of adherent E. coli. Out of 1,156 isolates obtained,...

Molecular identification of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) associated with infant diarrhea in Londrina, Parana, Brazil BJM
Kobayashi,Renata K. T.; Saridakis,Halha Ostrensky; Dias,Angela M.G.; Vidotto,Marilda C..
In this work, the prevalence of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) in children in Londrina-PR, Brazil, was evaluated by means of digoxigenin-labelled DNA probes which identify the plasmid responsible for EPEC adherence factor (EAF), and virulence genes for EPEC as bundle-forming pilus (bfp) and E. coli attaching-effacing factor (eae). In addition, the isolated strains were serotyped and tested for adherence to HEp-2 cells. From 102 children with diarrhoea, 19 strains hybridized with at least one probe, and eleven of them were identified as typical EPEC because they hybridized with the three probes used, showed a localized adherence (LA) pattern, and presented no genes for enterotoxins (ST and LT) or invasion as detected by PCR. Six of the typical...
