Energy potential of yam and plantain peels CIGR Journal
Fasina, Oladiran.
Peels are the wastes produced when yam and plantain are processed for human consumption.  This study evaluated the potential use of these wastes as energy feedstocks by conducting thermal decomposition studies in a thermogravimetric analyzer coupled to a Fourier Transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and in a differential scanning calorimeter.  The peels have ash contents of about 8%-9% hence a slightly lower energy contents in comparison to other biomass feedstocks.  The pyrolysis process for both yam and plantain peels was found to consist of two main stages - moisture loss at temperatures less than 150oC, and decomposition of the dry matter component that peaked at temperature of 300oC.  Both samples reached exothermic reactions that also peaked at...

Thermal and spectroscopic analyses on the molecular interaction between eucalyptus kraft pulp components and offset printing inks BABT
Alves,Ericka Figueiredo; Oliveira,Rubens Chaves de; Silva,Luis Henrique Mendes da; Colodette,Jorge Luiz.
Thermal and infrared spectroscopic analyzes were carried out in order to study the kind of interaction between the anatomical components of the bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp with offset inks. A Bauer-McNett fiber classifier was used in order to obtain the anatomical components of the pulp, separately. The determinations of the enthalpy of the processes occurring in the samples of inks and pulp, as well as the enthalpy of these components interactions were obtained by Differential Scanning Calorimetry. In the interaction between pulp and offset ink, the reduced enthalpy values of the endothermic peak were interpreted as due to the released energy for adhesion of the ink pigment to the substratum. The low enthalpy value, 58 to 121 cal.g -, ¹indicated that...

Characterization of ß-trypsin at acid pH by differential scanning calorimetry BJMBR
Bittar,E.R.; Caldeira,F.R.; Santos,A.M.C.; Günther,A.R.; Rogana,E.; Santoro,M.M..
Trypsin is a serino-protease with a polypeptide chain of 223 amino acid residues and contains six disulfide bridges. It is a globular protein with a predominance of antiparallel ß-sheet and helix in its secondary structure and has two domains with similar structures. We assessed the stability of ß-trypsin in the acid pH range using microcalorimetric (differential scanning calorimetry) techniques. Protein concentrations varied in the range of 0.05 to 2.30 mg/ml. Buffer solutions of 50.0 mM ß-alanine and 20.0 mM CaCl2 at different pH values (from 2.0 to 4.2) and concentrations of sorbitol (1.0 and 2.0 M), urea (0.5 M) or guanidinium hydrochloride (0.5 and 1.0 M) were used. The data suggest that we are studying the same conformational transition of the...

Determination of the melting temperature, heat of fusion, and purity analysis of different samples of zidovudine (AZT) using DSC BJPS
Araújo,Adriano Antunes Souza; Bezerra,Marília dos Santos; Storpirtis,Sílvia; Matos,Jivaldo do Rosário.
The determination of chemical purity, melting range, and variation of enthalpy in the process of characterizing medicines is one of the principal requirements evaluated in quality control of the pharmaceutical industry. In this study, the method of purity determination using DSC was outlined, as well as the application of this technique for the evaluation of commercial samples of zidovudine (AZT) (raw material) supplied by different laboratories. To this end, samples from six different laboratories (A, B, C, D, E, and F) and the standard reference (R) from the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) were analyzed. The DSC curves were obtained in the temperature range of 25 to 200 ºC under the dynamic atmosphere of N2 (50 mL min-1), heating rate of β=2 ºC min-1,...

Calorimetric techniques applied to the thermodynamic study of interactions between proteins and polysaccharides Ciência Rural
Santos,Monique Barreto; Costa,Bernardo de Sá; Rojas,Edwin Elard Garcia.
ABSTRACT: The interactions between biological macromolecules have been important for biotechnology, but further understanding is needed to maximize the utility of these interactions. Calorimetric techniques provide information regarding these interactions through the thermal energy that is produced or consumed during interactions. Notable techniques include differential scanning calorimetry, which generates a thermodynamic profile from temperature scanning, and isothermal titration calorimetry that provide the thermodynamic parameters directly related to the interaction. This review described how calorimetric techniques can be used to study interactions between proteins and polysaccharides, and provided valuable insight into the thermodynamics of their...
