Foregut morphology of Macrobrachium carcinus (Crustacea, Decapoda, Palaemonidae) 36
LIMA,Jô de Farias; GARCIA,Jamile da Silva; TAVARES,Marcos.
ABSTRACT Macrobrachium carcinus is a Brazilian native prawn with recognized potential for use in aquaculture activities. The aim of this study was to describe and illustrate in detail the morphology of the M. carcinus foregut. The foregut comprises the mouth, esophagus and stomach. It is lined by a simple cylindrical epithelium overlain by chitinous cuticle. The cardiac chamber is well supplied with muscles and lined with chitin thickened in places to form a complex, articulating set of ossicles. The ossicles and setae inside the cardiac chamber seem to direct the food movement through the cardiac chamber and sort the food according to particle size as digestion takes place. Twenty-one basic ossicles were observed in the stomach ofM. carcinus and are...

Development and functional morphology of the larval foregut of two brachyuran species from Northern Brazil 42
Abrunhosa,Fernando A.; Simith,Darlan J.B.; Monteiro,Joely R.C.; Souza Junior,Antonio N. de; Oliva,Pedro A.C..
Feeding is an important factor for the successful rearing of larvae of the crab species. Further information on the morphological features of the foregut may to reveal larval feeding behaviour and or/whether there is a lecithotrophy in some or even in all stages of the larval cycle. In the present study, the structural development of the foregut and their digestive functions were examined in larvae of two brachyurans, Uca vocator and Panopeus occidentalis, reared in the laboratory. During larval development, the foreguts of the larvae in the first and last zoeal stages and in the megalopa stage were microscopically examined, described and illustrated. The zoeal foreguts of both species were well developed, showing specialization with a functional...

Probiotics protect the intestinal wall of morphological changes caused by malnutrition 42
AZEVEDO,JORGE F. DE; HERMES-ULIANA,CATCHIA; LIMA,DIRLENE P.; SANT'ANA,DÉBORA M.G.; ALVES,GILBERTO; ARAÚJO,EDUARDO J.A..
This study sought to morphometrically analyze the jejunal wall of protein-malnourished rats administered a probiotic supplement. The sample consisted of recently weaned Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) distributed among four groups: animals given a commercial diet (G1, n = 4); animals given the same ration as G1 plus a probiotic supplement (G2, n = 4); animals given a 4% protein diet (G3, n = 4); and animals given the same ration as G3 plus a probiotic supplement (G4, n = 4). After 12 weeks, part of the jejunum was harvested and subjected to routine histological processing. Transverse sections with a thickness of 3 µm were stained with HE, and histochemical techniques were used to assay for glycoconjugates, including staining with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)...

Morphological and histochemical characterization of the digestive tract of the puffer fish Sphoeroides testudineus (Linnaeus 1758) (Tetraodontiformes: Tetraodontidae) 42
FAGUNDES,KAINÃ R.C.; ROTUNDO,MATHEUS M.; MARI,RENATA B..
ABSTRACT Morphological analysis of the digestive tract of Sphoeroides testudineus showed an esophagus with an anterior and a posterior portion, the abdominal pouch. No stomach was observed between the abdominal pouch and the intestine. The intestine was arranged in three segments and two loops, and the distal portion had the rectum opening into the anus. Histochemical analyses showed that the esophagus secreted acid mucosecretions, and that there was a qualitative increase in goblet cells from the proximal to distal area of the intestine. The rectum showed cells secreting acid and neutral mucus. Given these features, this species presents a morphology which creates a link between its ecology and behavior.

Food passage time through the alimentary tract of a brazilian teleost fish, Prochilodus scrofa (Steindachner, 1881) using radiography 62
BARBIERI,Renato Lamounier; LEITE,Rodolpho Guião; STERMAN,Franklin de Almeida; HERNANDEZ-BLAZQUEZ,Francisco Javier.
Food passage time through the digestive tract of a detritivorous freshwater fish (Prochilodus scrofa) was determinate by radiographic techniques using barium sulfate as a contrast medium. The fish were kept in tanks at a constant temperature of 23.5ºC and received by an oral catheter a mixture of 2.5 parts of ground ration and 1 part of oral suspension of contrast medium (Celobar). Radiographs were taken at intervals of 3 hours. Immediately after the introduction of the mixture the stomach was outlined by the contrast. A sphincter was observed between the cardiac and the muscular stomachs. After 3 hours, 80 per cent of the proximal intestine was filled. After 6 hours the contrast reached the proximal, medial and distal portions of the intestine. After 9...

Broiler adaptation to post-hatching period 65
Maiorka,Alex; Dahlke,Fabiano; Morgulis,Maria Silvia Furquim de Azevedo.
In the latest years more attention has been given to mechanisms for bird adaptation at post-hatching period by management of environmental conditions and formulations of diets offered during this period when digestive, immune, and thermo-regulating systems suffer slight changes. In post-hatching period, digestive system is anatomically complete, but its functionality is still immature in relation to adult birds. The chick immunity depends on maternal antibodies transferred to egg just before laying. In addition, variations within thermal comfort zone might affect initial development of chick. For example, high temperatures may induce hyperthermia with dehydration, while low temperatures may lead to hypothermia responsible by pulmonary hypertension...

Etude d'un Microorganisme de Type Chlamydien chez la Palourde Ruditapes Decussatus L. 5
The authors study a chlamydial micro-organism parasite of the digestive epithelium of the carpet shell Ruditapes decussatus. The action of this microorganism seems of little import : the intracellular infection is limited to a small number of cells and does not cause any serious lesion in the digestive epithelium.

Adaptive features of a bacteriolytic enzyme from the style of the mussel Choromytilus meridionalis in response to environmental fluctuations. 5
Seiderer, L; Robb, F.
The extracellular digestive apparatus of bivalve molluscs consists of a crystalline style containing diverse degradative enzymes which are released during rotation and dissolution of the style. This paper reviews the occurrence of a temperature-regulated bacteriolytic enzyme in the black mussel Choromytilus meridionalis , which is an inhabitant of coastal reefs on the south and south west coast of South Africa. This agent is unable to lyse Micrococcus luteus or Escherichia coli , both of which are susceptible to lysis by a true lysozyme. It appears to have a restricted spectrum of activity which includes both free-living and kelp-associated gram-negative bacteria. In addition, the level of activity varies dramatically according to the environmental water...

Growth factors in Penaeid shrimp feeding 5
Guillaume, Julien; Cruz, R; Cuzon, Gerard; Wormhoudt Van, A; Revol, A.
Some nutrients known as non essential in vertebrates could be essential in invertebrates and could be related to some "unknown growth factors" which were evidenced or suspected, mainly in mollusc or crustacean flesh or meal, by several authors working on different species of crustaceans. A set of experiments was carried out in our laboratory in order to isolate one of these factors found in squid meal.

Dietary phospholipids are more efficient than neutral lipids for long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid supply in European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax larval development 5
Gisbert, Enric; Villeneuve, Laure; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Quazuguel, Patrick; Cahu, Chantal.
We evaluated the effects of dietary lipid class (phospholipid vs. neutral lipid) and level of n-3 long-chain PUFA (LC-PUFA) on the growth, digestive enzymatic activity, and histological organization of the intestine and liver in European sea bass larvae. Fish were fed from the onset of exogenous feeding at 7 to 37 d post-hatch with five isoproteic and isolipidic compound diets with different levels of EPA and DHA. Diet names indicated the percentage of EPA and DHA contained in the phospholipids (PL) and neutral lipids (NL), as follows: PL5, PL3, PL1, NL1, and NL3. Histological observations showed different patterns of lipid absorption and accumulation in the intestinal mucosa depending on the level and nature of the dietary lipid fraction. Fish fed high...

A histological study on the development of the digestive system of Pseudosciaena crocea larvae and juveniles 5
Mai, Kangsen; Yu, Hairui; Ma, Hongming; Duan, Qingyuan; Gisbert, Enric; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Cahu, Chantal.
The ontogenetic development of the gut and accessory organs in large yellow croaker Pseudosciaena crocea was investigated using light microscopy from hatching up to the juvenile stage (40 days post hatch, dph). At 3 dph (mean +/- S.D., 4.1 +/- 0.1 mm total length, L-T), coinciding with the buccopharynx opening, larvae started to feed exogenously, and the gut consisted of a well-developed buccopharynx, a partially-differentiated oesophagus and an intestine divided in three regions (anterior intestine, intermediate intestine and rectum). Yolk reserves were not completely depleted at the onset of exogenous feeding, and a period of mixed nutrition was observed up to 6 dph (4.3 +/- 0.1 mm L-T) when yolk was definitively exhausted. Important morphological...

Developpement embryonnaire de Palaemon serratus : Resultats preliminaires 5
Bellon, H.
The formation of the limbs, the digestive tract, the nervous system, the sensory and hormonal structures begins in this prawn during the embryonic stage C, according to Richard's definition (1974) and is performed at the stage H. The digestive tract differentiates with a caudo-cephalic gradient. The digestive gland is formed at least partially by vitellophages. The C.N.S. appears with a cephalo-caudal gradient and the regions of the eyestalk are quickly differentiated. The organ of Bellonci and the sensory pore appear independently during the stage F. The first neurosecretory cells are detected in the brain during the stage D.

Returning to the roots: morphology, molecular phylogeny and classification of the Olivoidea (Gastropoda: Neogastropoda) 5
Kantor, Yu. I.; Fedosov, A. E.; Puillandre, N.; Bonillo, C.; Bouchet, P..
The superfamily Olivoidea is broadly distributed in the world’s oceans mostly in coastal waters at tropical and subtropical latitudes. It encompasses around 30 Recent genera and 460 species. Two families – Olividae and Olivellidae – are classically recognized within the superfamily. Their shell is very characteristic due to the presence of a modified callused anterior end and a fasciole. Prior to the present work, neither the monophyly of the superfamily nor the relationships among its genera had been tested with molecular phylogenetics. Four genetic markers [cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), 16S and 12S rRNA mitochondrial genes, and Histone 3 (H3) nuclear gene] were sequenced for 42 species in 14 genera. Additionally, 18 species were sequenced for COI...

Description of the unusual digestive tract of Platax orbicularis and the potential impact of Tenacibaculum maritimum infection 5
Alix, Maud; Gasset, Eric; Bardon-albaret, Agnes; Noel, Jean; Pirot, Nelly; Perez, Valérie; Coves, Denis; Saulnier, Denis; Lignot, Jehan-hervé; Cucchi, Patricia N..
Background Ephippidae fish are characterized by a discoid shape with a very small visceral cavity. Among them Platax orbicularis has a high economic potential due to its flesh quality and flesh to carcass ratio. Nonetheless, the development of its aquaculture is limited by high mortality rates, especially due to Tenacibaculum maritimum infection, occurring one to three weeks after the transfer of fishes from bio-secure land-based aquaculture system to the lagoon cages for growth. Among the lines of defense against this microbial infection, the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is less studied. The knowledge about the morphofunctional anatomy of this organ in P. orbicularis is still scarce. Therefore, the aims of this study are to characterize the GIT in...

Early weaning of marine fish larvae onto microdiets: Constraints and perspectives 5
Person, L.
Weaning small sized marine fish larvae at first feeding directly onto compound pellets is still difficult, while good results can be obtained when used in combination with live prey or when a prefeeding period on live prey is provided up to a size of about 2-3 mg. Microdiets are generally well ingested as their acceptability and visual detection may be improved using feeding activators and increasing good perception contrast. In theory, food may be processed to have a correct nutritional balance, selection of high digestible components is very important as larval digestive system is not fully functional during the first 2 or 3 weeks of life.

Etude histoensymologique de la digestion chez Ruditapes philippinarum 5
Hily, A.
Examinations of alimentary tract and digestive tubules after feeding give evidence of continuous digestive process in juveniles of Ruditapes philippinarum . Histoenzymologic study of digestive tract suggests important intracellular enzymatic activities in stomacal epithelium, digestive gland and intestinal cells. Main part of intracellular digestion occurred in digestive cells by lysosyme associated with vacuolar system.

Ontogeny of the digestive enzyme activity of the Amazonian pimelodid catfish Pseudoplatystoma punctifer (Castelnau, 1855) 5
Castro-ruiz, Diana; Mozanzadeh, Mansour Torfi; Fernández-méndez, Christian; Andree, Karl B.; García-dávila, Carmen; Cahu, Chantal; Gisbert, Enric; Darias, Maria J..
The aim of the study was to evaluate the functional ontogeny of the digestive system of Pseudoplatystoma punctifer through the analysis of the activity of the main intestinal (alkaline phosphatase, aminopeptidase N, maltase and leucine-alanine peptidase), pancreatic (trypsin, chymotrypsin, total alkaline proteases, bile-salt activated lipase and amylase) and gastric (pepsin) enzymes. Larvae were raised in triplicate in a recirculation system from 4 to 27 days post fertilization (dpf) at an initial density of 90 larvae L−1, 27.8 ± 0.7 °C and 0 L: 24D photoperiod. Dietary vitamin D-3 affects digestive system ontogenesis and ossification in European sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax, Linnaeus, 1758) 5
Darias, Maria J.; Mazurais, David; Koumoundouros, Giorgos; Glynatsi, Nomiki; Christodoulopoulou, Stavroula; Huelvan, Christine; Desbruyeres, Elisabeth; Le Gall, Marie-madeleine; Quazuguel, Patrick; Cahu, Chantal; Zambonino-infante, Jose L..
The influence of dietary vitamin D-3 (VD3) on survival, growth and morphogenesis during the larval development of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was evaluated until 45 days post hatching. Diets contained 4% of the standard vitamin mix (VM) recommended by the National Research Council (NRC) and incorporated 0, 19.2, 38.4, or 140 IU of VD3 per gram of diet to give VD-0, VD-1, VD-2 and VD-3 dietary treatments, respectively. The present study revealed for the first time an impact of dietary VD3 on the sea bass digestive system ontogenesis that consequently conditioned the ossification process and morphogenesis. All dietary VD3 levels were in the "adequate range" based on larval survival. Nevertheless, growth, intestinal maturation and ossification at...

Dynamique et enzymologie de la digestion chez l'huitre Crassostrea gigas 5
Boucaud, C; Lebesnerais, C; Lubet, P; Lihrmann, I.
Feeding experiments carried out on Crassostrea gigas allowed the authors to set up the stages and the timing of the movement of food throughout the digestive tract. Various activities involved in digestion (glycosidases, esterases, and peptidases) were investigated histochemically in the digestive tract in order to localize the sites of absorption and the sites of protein and carbohydrate digestion. An explicative model of the different stages of digestion is proposed.
