Updating Geographic Distribution of Artemia urmiana GÜNTHER, 1890 (Branchiopoda: Anostraca) in Europe: An Integrated and Interdisciplinary Approach IBSS Repository
Abatzopoulos, Th. J.; Amat, F.; Baxevanis, A. D.; Belmonte, G.; Hontoria, F.; Maniatsi, S.; Moscatello, S.; Mura, G.; Shadrin, N. V..
Artemia urmiana (a species previously considered endemic of Lake Urmia, NW Iran) has been found in Lake Koyashskoe, a hypersaline lake on the Black Sea coast of the Crimean peninsula (Ukraine). Therefore, this is the first record of A. urmiana in Europe which updates its distribution. The species identification was based on an integrated and interdisciplinary approach using discriminant analysis of the morphometric characters, scanning electron microscopy, and molecular profile analysis. The data derived from the above mentioned approaches converge to significant similarity of the population under investigation with A. urmiana. The updated geographic distribution of the species, deriving from the present report, asks for additional contribution of other...

Assessing population-level morphometric variation of the Mountain Mullet Agonostomus monticola (Teleostei: Mugilidae) across its Middle American distribution Neotropical Ichthyology
Díaz-Murillo,Bertha P.; Ruiz-Campos,Gorgonio; Piller,Kyle R.; McMahan,Caleb D.; García-De-León,Francisco J.; Camarena-Rosales,Faustino.
ABSTRACT Population-level morphometric variation of the Mountain Mullet (Agonostomus monticola) was assessed in 419 adult specimens from 25 sample sites (river basins) across its Middle American distribution (Pacific and Atlantic-Caribbean drainages). This analysis was based on 36 standardized linear measurements and 19 landmarks on geometric morphometrics approach. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) revealed 19 linear morphological characters with significant variation among groups. Geometrically, the most notable changes were associated to the curvature of the frontal region of the head, the anterior and posterior insertion of the first dorsal and anal fins. The resulting grouping based on the DFA and geometric morphometrics techniques (Pacific-A,...

Patterns of organic contaminants in marine mammals with reference to sperm whale strandings OMA
Wells, D.E.; McKenzie, C.; Ross, H.M..
Discriminant analysis has been applied to organochlorine contaminant data from a small number (<i>ca</i> 3-25) of 12 different marine mammal species to discriminate between the species on the basis of the chlorobiphenyls (CB) patterns in blubber and account for the effects of age, sex, condition and location of the mammals. The raw data are normalised to a single congener, CB 153, to reduce the effects of life history and sex, after which the discriminant factors are plotted to display the differences between species in relation to the intake and the metabolism of chlorobiphenyls. An understanding of these differences gives a better knowledge of the relative sensibility of these species. The sperm whales were found to have the least ability to...

Segregation of patches by patterns of soil attributes in a native grassland in central Argentina Phyton
Villamil,MB; Amiotti,NM; Peinemann,N.
Demand for greater cattle production at the El Caldenal area in central Argentina has resulted in overgrazing in a patchy grassland structure. Patches are clearly identified on the basis of dominant plant species resulting from their grazing history. Our primary objective was to examine the influence of individual plants at each patch on the local multivariate pattern of soil nutrients, assessing the magnitude of the association between the concentration of nutrients in the plant and its underlying soil. Canonical discriminant analysis highlighted the important role of soil organic matter, available P, and Zn content of soils to segregate among patches. The canonical correlation analysis between soil and plant variables revealed a significant association...

Association between microsatellites and resistance to Mal de Río Cuarto in maize by discriminant analysis Phyton
Bonamico,NC; Balzarini,MG; Arroyo,AT; Ibañez,MA; Díaz,DG; Salerno,JC; Di Renzo,MA.
Resistance to Mal de Río Cuarto (MRC) disease in maize (Zea mays L.) is important in Argentina because the crop area involves a wide region where the disease is endemic. Molecular marker-assisted selection could be used as an additional selection tool to enhance precision of the genotype selection for resistance. It demands the identification of informative markers. Microsatellite (SSR) markers linked to gene(s) associated with resistance to MRC have been reported from previous QTL analyses. These analyses have been made on linkage maps derived from a relatively early mapping population. In advanced populations, where highly distinct genotypes are easily classified, discriminant analysis (DA) represents a complementary strategy to marker identification;...

DETERMINANTES DA ERRADICAÇÃO DA FEBRE AFTOSA NO BRASIL AgEcon
Muller, Carlos Andre da Silva; Mattos, Leonardo Bornacki de; Lima, Joao Eustaquio de.
Foot and mouth disease (FMD) has been a problem for the Brazilian livestock since the XIX century. Once it affects the livestock productivity and has always been a problem for the country exports due to the imposition of sanitary barriers. In 1992, when no state was free from FMD, the National Program for Eradication of FMD (PNEFA) was implemented. Since then good results has been obtained with control and eradication of the disease in some states. However, in other states the problem still persists. It is important to determine why some states have faced difficulties in reaching the status of free from FMD while others not. This work aimed to identify the factors which discriminate the populations of states free from FMD from those not free. The results...

Salinization mechanisms of a small alluvial aquifer in the semiarid region of northeast Brazil AGRIAMBI
Almeida,João R. F. de; Frischkorn,Horst.
The objective of this research was to identify and quantify the primary processes responsible for the increase in salinity observed in the alluvial aquifer during the dry season. Multivariate statistical analysis and inverse geochemical modeling were used to simulate possible salinization mechanisms in the alluvial aquifer. For this, by quantifying electrical conductivity and the concentrations of the ions Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl-, HCO3- and SO42- in waters from the crystalline basement near the study area, water reservoirs near the alluvial aquifer and the studied alluvial aquifer, groups were formed and discriminant analysis was applied. Significance tests showed that direct evaporation has not only an influence on the alluvial aquifer, but also a mean...

Morphology of the shell of Happiella cf. insularis (Gastropoda: Heterobranchia: Systrophiidae) from three forest areas on Ilha Grande, Southeast Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Barbosa,Amilcar Brum; Santos,Sonia Barbosa dos.
We conducted a study on shell morphology variation among three populations of Happiella cf. insularis (Boëttger, 1889) inhabiting different areas (Jararaca, Caxadaço, and Parnaioca trails) at Vila Dois Rios, Ilha Grande, Angra dos Reis, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Linear and angular measurements, shell indices representing shell shape, and whorl counts were obtained from images drawn using a stereomicroscope coupled with a camera lucida. The statistical analysis based on ANOVA (followed by Bonferroni's test), Pearson's correlation matrix, and discriminant analysis enabled discrimination among the populations studied. The variable that most contributed to discriminate among groups was shell height. Mean shell height was greatest for specimens collected...

Morphological characterization of Amiata donkey through Multivariate analyses R. Bras. Zootec.
Sargentini,Clara; Tocci,Roberto; Martini,Andrea; Bozzi,Riccardo.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphology and biometrics of female Amiata donkeys reared in four different areas of southern Tuscany, Italy, to determine the differentiation degree of animals. Four southern Tuscan areas were investigated: two mountainous zones (East and West Amiata) and two flatter areas (Coastal area and Siena surrounding). Morphology and biometrics of adult female Amiata donkeys were collected to determine the homogeneity of the population. Primitive coat markings typical of the breed (shoulder and leg stripes) were found in Amiata donkey. Jennets from Siena surrounding were more dolichomorphic, while West Amiata individuals were smaller. The Principal Component Analysis and the Discriminant Analysis separated...

Mulch materials in processing tomato: a multivariate approach Scientia Agricola
Moreno,Marta María; Moreno,Carmen; Tarquis,Ana María.
Mulch materials of different origins have been introduced into the agricultural sector in recent years alternatively to the standard polyethylene due to its environmental impact. This study aimed to evaluate the multivariate response of mulch materials over three consecutive years in a processing tomato (Solanum lycopersicon L.) crop in Central Spain. Two biodegradable plastic mulches (BD1, BD2), one oxo-biodegradable material (OB), two types of paper (PP1, PP2), and one barley straw cover (BS) were compared using two control treatments (standard black polyethylene [PE] and manual weed control [MW]). A total of 17 variables relating to yield, fruit quality, and weed control were investigated. Several multivariate statistical techniques were applied,...

Morphometric identification of small mammal footprints from ink tracking tunnels in the Brazilian Cerrado Zoologia
Palma,Alexandre R. T.; Gurgel-Gonçalves,Rodrigo.
An alternative method for identifying and inventorying rodents and marsupials inhabiting forests and grasslands of Brazilian Cerrado is presented and discussed. Ink tracking tunnels were designed according to the size of target species and used to build a reference collection of small mammal footprints composed of 1408 footprints belonging to 251 individuals from 30 species (21 rodents and nine marsupials). Sherman traps and ink tracking tunnels were used to conduct inventories in gallery forests. Footprints obtained in ink tracking tunnels were digitalized and compared with those in reference collection using Discriminant Analysis (DFA). DFA allowed good footprint differentiation, even among congeneric species. In DFA analysis, the first two axis were...

Multivariate analysis of stable isotope data in the traceability process for birds - doi: 10.4025/actascianimsci.v34i4.13434 Animal Sciences
Sartori, Maria Márcia Pereira; Denadai, Juliana Célia; Garcia, Amélia Maria Lima; Carrijo, Alfredo Sampaio; Ducatti, Carlos.
Isotope analysis has proved to be an extremely important tool in the traceability process; however, statistical analyses of the results show discrepancies, as the data depend on and originate from several chemical elements such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur (CHONS). In order to establish the proper analysis of traceability data for birds using the stable isotope technique and evaluate the need for a combined analysis of the variables, data for carbon-13 and nitrogen-15 were used from eggs (albumen + yolk) of laying hens and the pectoral muscle of broilers, which were subjected to univariate statistical analysis (ANOVA and complemented with Tukey’s test) and multivariate statistical analysis (MANOVA and Discriminant Analysis). The data...

Pollen deposition in tauber traps and surface soil samples in the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon area, pampa grasslands (Argentina) Boletín de la Sociedad
Latorre,Fabiana; Pérez,Claudio F.; Stutz,Silvina; Pastorino,Susana.
Estimations of airborne pollen loadings deposited in Tauber traps were studied in a coastal lagoon from south-eastern Pampa grasslands, Argentina, in order to assess their relationship with surface samples and to interpret the representativeness of local, regional and extraregional vegetation. Three different environments were considered: a coastal dune barrier with a psammophytic community, a salt marsh with a halophytic community in Mar Chiquita lagoon, and a freshwater community at Hinojales freshwater lake. Based on a record of surface samples taken from a previous paper, a parametric model was built to classify Tauber samples gathered from the natural vegetation communities of the study area. Results revealed that just like their surface counterparts,...

A new study method of microhabitat structure of small mammals BJB
CERQUEIRA,R.; FREITAS,S. R..
The variables in habitat studies are usually transformed in such a way that they become abstractions and intuition is lost. We tested a new method for the analysis of habitat using data collected in a grid laid at the "restinga de Maricá", in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Thirty-seven microhabitat variables were measured at each trap station. We assume that these variables characterize the microhabitat structure at the moment when measurements were taken. The data are transformed in 3 ways: (1) the averages of the measured variables were calculated, as usual in habitat studies; (2) the data are transformed in densities per area in square meters without reduction in the number of variables; and (3) we calculated the natural logarithms of the data thus...

Texture analysis of computed tomography images of acute ischemic stroke patients BJMBR
Oliveira,M.S.; Fernandes,P.T.; Avelar,W.M.; Santos,S.L.M.; Castellano,G.; Li,L.M..
Computed tomography (CT) images are routinely used to assess ischemic brain stroke in the acute phase. They can provide important clues about whether to treat the patient by thrombolysis with tissue plasminogen activator. However, in the acute phase, the lesions may be difficult to detect in the images using standard visual analysis. The objective of the present study was to determine if texture analysis techniques applied to CT images of stroke patients could differentiate between normal tissue and affected areas that usually go unperceived under visual analysis. We performed a pilot study in which texture analysis, based on the gray level co-occurrence matrix, was applied to the CT brain images of 5 patients and of 5 control subjects and the results were...

Gene trio signatures as molecular markers to predict response to doxorubicin cyclophosphamide neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancerpatients BJMBR
Katayama,M.L.H.; Brentani,H.; Abreu,A.P.S.; Barbosa,E.M.; Oliveira,C.T.; Góes,J.C.S.; Brentani,M.M.; Folgueira,M.A.A.K..
In breast cancer patients submitted to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (4 cycles of doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide, AC), expression of groups of three genes (gene trio signatures) could distinguish responsive from non-responsive tumors, as demonstrated by cDNA microarray profiling in a previous study by our group. In the current study, we determined if the expression of the same genes would retain the predictive strength, when analyzed by a more accessible technique (real-time RT-PCR). We evaluated 28 samples already analyzed by cDNA microarray, as a technical validation procedure, and 14 tumors, as an independent biological validation set. All patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (4 AC). Among five trio combinations previously identified, defined by nine...

Noninvasive classification of liver disease in asymptomatic and oligosymptomatic male alcoholics BJMBR
Borini,P.; Guimarães,R.C..
The predominant type of liver alteration in asymptomatic or oligosymptomatic chronic male alcoholics (N = 169) admitted to a psychiatric hospital for detoxification was classified by two independent methods: liver palpation and multiple quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), the latter applied to two parameters reported by the patient (duration of alcoholism and daily amount ingested) and to the data obtained from eight biochemical blood determinations (total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, glycemia, potassium, aspartate aminotransferase, albumin, globulin, and sodium). All 11 soft and sensitive, and 13 firm and sensitive livers formed fully concordant groups as determined by QDA. Among the 22 soft and not sensitive livers, 95% were concordant by QDA...
