In the northern Bay of Biscay (France), catches of Atlantic sardine (Sardina pilchardus, Walbaum) fluctuated widely at a time-scale of a few days until the end of the fishery in 1970. These variations were not syndhronous between the adjacent Douarnenez, Audierne and Concarneau Bays in southwest Brittany, or between Belle-Ile, Quiberon and Le Croisic or the fishing harbours of Les Sables d'Olonne and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie further south. Wind speed effects on hydrology and circulation also varied between these areas. Significant relationships between wind speed from one specific component or an index composed with the tide range and the wind speed and catches per unit of effort or CPUE were obtained from regression analyses for all areas except Audierne... |
