ArchiMer
Mellon, Capucine; Charuau, Anatole; Tetard, Alain.
Fisheries are managed by stocks. A stock is defined by species and geographical area. Their management is international including all the countries which have a fishing activity in each geographical area. The International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is an international structure which undertakes to organize working groups each year. The groups are made up of scientists from different countries. Those experts are put in charge of assessing the most important stocks. The main results of these assessments are described in that report. The most important French and international landings of demersal fishes and nephrops in North-Eastern Atlantic are presented in the introduction of the report. The species are cod, whiting, saithe, haddock, sole,...

Bennet, D; Casey, J; Dare, P; Dawson, W; Flatman, S; Hulme, T; Macer, C; Millner, R; Pickett, G; Vince, M; Lorance, Pascal; Souplet, A; Giret, M; Morin, Jocelyne; Berthou, A; Latrouite, Daniel; Morizur, Yvon; Bossy, S; Ozanne, S.
At present, the majority of fisheries are monitored and regulated in areas which are delineated by arbitrary ICES boundaries which do not necessarily have logical or consistent relationships with biological processes or fish movements. The biogeographical identification of Channel stocks is, therefore, an important step towards developing a rational strategy for the management of their fisheries. This synthesis is based on the wide available knowledge which has not been yet entirely exploited with the purpose of stock identification, for 25 commercially important species in the Channel. In addition, principal technics for stock identification are reviewed likewise environmental characteristics of the Channel, which represent fundamental components in...

Prouzet, Patrick; Metuzals, K.
The anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus L. population in the Bay of Biscay, is described in context with other Engraulidae populations in the world. Mean landings are provided for six different species from 1974 to 1992. The great variations in the abundance (up to 200 %) of these populations, in relation to upwelling and environmental parameters are also discussed. Historical changes in the French and Spanish fleet fishing for anchovy are highlighted since 1950. The main events in the development of these fisheries are detailed. The total number ofboats in the French fleet have increased from 1987-1993 whereas the number of seiners in the Spanish fleet in that peri ad remained stable since 1980. The third part of this report describes the French fishery for...

Blanchard, Michel.
This report deals with results obtained in 1995 and 1996 through a grant of Council of Brittany. The distribution and stock assessment of the slipper-limpet population (Crepidulafornicata) is analysed, in the near shoreline between Cap Fréhel and Mont-Saint-Michel. Several cruises allowed to use side-scan sonar, underwater video and scuba diving observations. Hamon grab has been used for quantitative sampling. Several direct observations were done ashore for complete informations. On this seaside of Brittany, it is observed that the population is mainly concentrated along the coast and main densities are found in the bay of Cancale, around deep oyster beds. Total fresh biomass is estimated about 149 000 metric tons. Local reasons and consequences of such a...

Past and present geographical distribution of populations of Portuguese (Crassostrea angulata) and Pacific (C. gigas) oysters along the European and north African Atlantic coats ArchiMer
Fabioux, Caroline; Huvet, Arnaud; Lapegue, Sylvie; Heurtebise, Serge; Boudry, Pierre.
Today, it is commonly accepted that C. angulata and C. gigas are a single species according to morphological, genetic and experimental hybridization data. Following the viral disease that affected C. angulata and the subsequent expansion of C. gigas in Europe, it was of interest to examine the geographical distribution of both taxa in Europe. We studied the genetic composition of seventeen populations of cupped oysters, sampled in France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Italy, using a diagnostic marker, the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxydase I gene. Results showed two distinct geographical zones. All the populations located in the northern part of the European sampled zone were mainly composed of C. gigas haplotypes whereas populations from southern Europe and...

Gailhard, Isabelle.
The dynamic of coastal marine microphytoplankton communities is characterized by successions of species assemblages displaying typical schemes of spatio-temporal variability. Numerous studies of phytoplankton spatio-temporal variability have concerned holistic variables such as total biomass or primary production. Such studies deal with the role of primary producers in the global functioning of the pelagic ecosystem, but have little relevance to other problematics. For instance, knowledge of the taxonomic composition of phytoplankton communities and of their spatio-temporal patterns is necessary to understand the mechanisms favouring of the predominance of a precisely identified population within phytoplankton communities. In particular, the identification...
