Age polyethism in Plebeia emerina (Friese) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) colonies related to propolis handling Neotropical Entomology
Santos,Camila G dos; Blochtein,Betina; Megiolaro,Fernanda L; Imperatriz-Fonseca,Vera L.
Stingless bees collect plant resins and make it into propolis, although they have a wider range of use for this material than do honey bees (Apis spp.). Plebeia spp. workers employ propolis mixed with wax (cerumen) for constructing and sealing nest structures, while they use viscous (sticky) propolis for defense by applying it onto their enemies. Isolated viscous propolis deposits are permanently maintained at the interior of their colonies, as also seen in other Meliponini species. Newly-emerged Plebeia emerina (Friese) workers were observed stuck to and unable to escape these viscous propolis stores. We examined the division of labor involved in propolis manipulation, by observing marked bees of known age in four colonies of P. emerina from southern...

Reproductive behavior and parental roles of the cichlid fish Laetacara araguaiae Neotropical Ichthyology
Teresa,Fabrício Barreto; Freitas,Eliane Gonçalves-de.
We described the reproductive behavior of the small South American cichlid Laetacara araguaiae in streams from Brazil. We predicted that this species will show reproductive cooperation and division of labor between males and females in a similar way presented by other substrate-spawner cichlids. Thus, we studied 34 pairs in the pre-spawning (n = 11), egg/wriggler (n = 11) and fry (n = 12) phases. In the pre-spawning phase both sexes become involved in nest building and territorial defense, but females emphasizes building nest (p = 0.03), while males invest more time in territorial defense (p = 0.04). After spawning, male and female alternate between rearing eggs and defending nest in the territory. In the egg/wriggler phase females devotes more time...

Contract Duration and the Division of Labor in Agricultural Land Leases AgEcon
Yoder, Jonathan K.; Hossain, Ishrat; Epplin, Francis M.; Doye, Damona G..
Short-term contracts provide weak incentives for durable input investment if post-contract asset transfer is difficult. Our model shows that when both agents provide inputs, optimal contract length balances weak incentives of one agent against the other. This perspective broadens the existing contract duration literature, which emphasizes the tradeoff between risk sharing and contract costs. We develop hypotheses and test them based on private grazing contracts from the Southern Great Plains. We find broad support for the implications of our model. For example, landowners provide durable land-specific inputs more often under annual versus multiyear contracts.

Anther specializations related to the division of labor in Microlicia cordata (Spreng.) Cham. (Melastomataceae) Acta Botanica
Velloso,Mariana de Souza Carvalho; Brito,Vinícius Lourenço Garcia de; Caetano,Ana Paula Souza; Romero,Rosana.
ABSTRACT In heterantherous flowers, some anthers have an attraction and feeding function, while others are related to plant reproduction. Microlicia cordata has dimorphic stamens organized in two cycles: the antesepalous one with large stamens and pink anthers, and the antepetalous one with small stamens and yellow anthers. Division of labor was analyzed using the parameters of structure, composition, amount and estimated viability of pollen, and the color of floral parts. The anthers of the pollinating stamens were larger than the anthers of the feeding stamens, although anatomically similar. There was a difference in the amount of pollen produced by the anthers of the two cycles, but no difference was found in pollen viability. Considering a bee color...

Labor division in Melipona compressipes fasciculata Smith (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Meliponinae) Anais da SEB
Giannini,Katia M..
Labor division in the stingless bee Melipona compressipes fasciculata Smith was analyzed and compared with that of other eusocial bees Meliponini and Trigonini. The results showed a sequence of activities which was similar to that of other stingless bees already studied, such as: grooming; cerumen work; cell construction; cleaning; the colony; provisioning and oviposition process; ventilation; enclosure gap; nectar reception; and foraging.
