Can modelling the drift of bycaught dolphin stranded carcasses help identify involved fisheries? An exploratory study ArchiMer

Between the 1st of February and the March 31, 2017, 793 stranded cetaceans were found along the French Atlantic coasts. Common dolphins made up 84% of these strandings, and most of these presented evidence of death in fishing gear. The aim of this work is to test an approach that could help identify the fisheries potentially involved in a given stranding event. To do this we examined how the distributions of likely areas of mortality of bycaught dolphins, inferred from carcass drift modelling, coincide with fishing effort statistics of various fleets, generated from the Vessel Monitoring System, in the area over the same dates. Using reverse drift modelling, two main mortality areas were identified. A total of 3690 common dolphins (IC95% [2230; 6900]) were...

Note preliminaire a l'etude des Cetaces des cotes Francaises de Mediterranee ArchiMer
Duguy, Raymond; Cyrus, Jean-louis.
This preliminary study of whales and dolphins off the French Mediterranean coasts refers to 15 spp, 11 Odontoceti and 4 Mysticeti: 3 of them are common; Delphinus delphis, Tursiops truncatus and Ziphius cavirostris (in the Ligurian sea), 2 are frequent in the Ligurian sea: Grampus griseus and Balaenoptera physalus, 3 are not uncommon: Stenella coeruleoalba, Globicephala melaena, and Physeter macrocephalus, 2 are rare: Pseudorca crassidens and Orcinus orca, 3 are exceptional: Balaena acutorostrata, Megaptera novaeangliae, and Steno bredanensis, 2 seem doubtful: Hyperoodon ampullatus and Balaenoptera musculus. Also important is the fact that no Phocoena phocoena has been observed. More generally, whales and dolphins seem to be more abundant in the area...

The distribution and diversity of whales and dolphins (Cetacea) in the southern North Sea: 1970-2005 Naturalis
Meij, S.E.T. van der; Camphuysen, C.J..
Between 1970 and 2005 sightings data of cetaceans in the southern North Sea were collected as part of the Marine Mammal Database of the Dutch Seabird Group. The data include incidental sightings and reports as well as results from systematic surveys and seawatching data. They are therefore difficult to correct for fluctuations in observer effort. The material was evaluated firstly to see which species occur in Dutch waters and, secondly, to see if any spatial and temporal trends in abundance can be observed. In this study the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is excluded from the analysis, except in the discussion, where the results are put into context with data about strandings and overall abundance. The status of the 17 different species that have...

Expérimentation d’un répulsif acoustique pour la limitation des interactions entre les senneurs et les delphinidés de la région du Cap-Bon (Kélibia-Tunisie) OceanDocs
Messaoud, R. Ben; Chérif, M.; Rjeibi, O.; Bradai, M.N.; Bejaoui, N..

Successful amplification of mitochondrial DNA from dentin of the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus BABT
Weber,Laura Isabel; Luca,Michelle Jaccottet de; Barreto,André Silva; Souza,Tiago Tolentino de.
Twenty-four teeth of Tursiops truncatus from the collection of the Marine Mammals Laboratory (FURG-RS) were analysed for their potential as DNA source for population genetic and taxonomic studies. All teeth were submitted to decontamination, grinding and demineralisation processes. Dentin powder was weighed for DNA extraction, which was evaluated by the amplification of two mitochondrial genes through PCR using universal primers. Cytochrome-b gene was amplified successfully. PCR products showed concentrations of 3-12 ng/µl for dentin powder, which was positively correlated to the quantity of dentin powder used for DNA extraction. To rule out contamination a SSCP was carried out including positive controls, and samples of humans involved in the analysis....
