State estimation and optimal long period clinical treatment of HIV seropositive patients Anais da ABC (AABC)
Grégio,Juliana M.; Caetano,Marco A.L.; Yoneyama,Takashi.
Optimal control theory provides a very interesting quantitative method that can be used to assist the decision making process in several areas of application, such as engineering, biology, economics and sociology. The main idea is to determine the values of the manipulated variables, such as drug doses, so that some cost function is minimized, subject to physical constraints. In this work, the cost function reflects the number of CD4+T cells, viral particles and the drug doses. It is worth noticing that high drug doses are related to more intense side-effects, apart from the impact on the actual cost of the treatment. In a previous paper by the authors, the LQR - Linear Quadratic Regulator approach was proposed for the computation of long period...

Sporothrix schenckii and sporotrichosis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Lopes-Bezerra,Leila M.; Schubach,Armando; Costa,Rosane O..
For a long time sporotrichosis has been regarded to have a low incidence in Brazil; however, recent studies demonstrate that not only the number of reported cases but also the incidence of more severe or atypical clinical forms of the disease are increasing. Recent data indicate that these more severe forms occur in about 10% of patients with confirmed diagnosis. The less frequent forms, mainly osteoarticular sporotrichosis, might be associated both with patient immunodepression and zoonotic transmission of the disease. The extracutaneous form and the atypical forms are a challenge to a newly developed serological test, introduced as an auxiliary tool for the diagnosis of unusual clinical forms of sporotrichosis.

Short and long period optimization of drug doses in the treatment of AIDS Anais da ABC (AABC)
CAETANO,MARCO A. L.; YONEYAMA,TAKASHI.
Numerical optimization techniques are useful in solving problems of computing the best inputs for systems described by mathematical models and when the objectives can be stated in a quantitative form. This work concerns the problem of optimizing the drug doses in the treatment of AIDS in terms of achieving a balance between the therapeutic response and the side effects. A mathematical model describing the dynamics of HIV viruses and CD4 cells is used to compute the short term optimal drug doses in the treatments of patients with AIDS by a direct method of optimization using a cost function of Bolza type. The model parameters were fitted to actual published clinical data. In order to simplify the numerical procedures, the control law is expressed as a...

Interactions between cationic liposomes and drugs or biomolecules Anais da ABC (AABC)
CARMONA-RIBEIRO,ANA MARIA.
Multiple uses for synthetic cationic liposomes composed of dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide (DODAB) bilayer vesicles are presented. Drugs or biomolecules can be solubilized or incorporated in the cationic bilayers. The cationic liposomes themselves can act as antimicrobial agents causing death of bacteria and fungi at concentrations that barely affect mammalian cells in culture. Silica particles or polystyrene microspheres can be functionalized by coverage with DODAB bilayers or phospholipid monolayers. Negatively charged antigenic proteins can be carried by the cationic liposomes which generate a remarkable immunoadjuvant action. Nucleotides or DNA can be physically adsorbed to the cationic liposomes to be transferred to mammalian cells for gene...

Sensibilidade antimicrobiana de amostras de Escherichia coli isoladas de leitões com diarréia após o desmame BABT
Brito,Benito Guimarães de; Tagliari,Kelly Cristina.
The main infectious agent responsible by post-weaning diarrhoea in piglets is the Escherichia coli and the therapy by drugs is used for control of this disease. The antimicrobial sensitivity of 66 strains of Escherichia coli isolated from piglets with post-weaning diarrhoea was studied. The results show high resistance at four drugs (streptomycin, sulfonamide, tetracycline and chloramphenicol). Gentamycin and neomycin were the best antimicrobial in the inhibition of strains of Escherichia coli, isolated from piglets with post-weaning diarrhoea, in the southwest of Paraná.

Characterization of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex isolated from iranian and afghani patients by spoligotyping method BJM
Ramazanzadeh,Rashid; Farnia,Parisa; Amirmozafari,Nour.
Designing newer drugs, vaccines, and diagnostic techniques is dependent on better understanding of M. tuberculosis virulence mechanism. In this study the prevalence of pcaA gene was determined in M. tuberculosis strains typed by spoligotyping. The associated risk factors among patients with different nationalities residing in Iran were also determined. The isolated M. tuberculosis strains have been characterized by performing susceptibility tests against four first-line antituberculosis drugs and were then subjected to spoligotyping characterization. PCR was used for detection of pcaA gene and its nucleotide sequence was also determined. Spoligotyping of M. tuberculosis strains resulted in 140 different patterns. One hundred twenty two (87.1%) of these...

Antileishmanial and antitrypanosomal activity of the cutaneous secretion of Siphonops annulatus J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Pinto,Erika Gracielle; Antoniazzi,Marta Maria; Jared,Carlos; Tempone,and Andre Gustavo.
Background Among the tropical parasitic diseases, those caused by protozoans are considered a challenge to public health, being represented by leishmaniasis and Chagas disease. In view of the low effectiveness and toxicity of the current therapy, animal venoms such as amphibian secretions have been used as a promising source of new drug prototypes. The present work aimed to achieve bioguided fractionation of metabolites present in a cutaneous secretion of the caecilian Siphonops annulatus (Amphibia: Gymnophiona: Siphonopidae) with antileishmanial and antitrypanosomal activity. Methods Through liquid-liquid partition and chromatographic techniques, the secretion was fractionated using bioguided assays. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of the main...

Live-food mediated drug delivery as a tool for disease treatment in larviculture: the enrichment of therapeutics in rotifers and <i>Artemia</i> nauplii OMA
Verpraet, R.; Chair, M.; Léger, P.; Nelis, H.; Sorgeloos, P.; De Leenheer, A.P..
The live food enrichment technique using emulsions for nutritional deficiencies in rotifers and <i>Artemia</i> was further investigated as a tool for transferring therapeutics through the food chain. <i>Artemia</i> nauplii and the rotifer <i>Brachionus plicatilis</i> were enriched with a self-emulsifying concentrate in which the therapeutic mixture trimetoprim: sulfamethoxazole was incorporated. An analytical method and protocol for the quantification of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in a heterogeneous biological matrix, such as <i>Artemia</i> , was developed using High Performance Liquid Chromatography. When applying a 24h enrichment period, the accumulation of both drugs in <i>Artemia</i>...

Antibiotic resistence of Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887) and Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) Scientia Agricola
Belém-Costa,Andréa; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
One of the most important problems involving treatments with antibiotics against Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from fishes is that antibiotic resistance develops readily. The antimicrobial activity of chemotherapeutants in isolates from pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887) and tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) was tested by the Kirby-Bauer disk method, over Mueller-Hinton surface agar previously inoculated with 100 µL of bacterial suspensions. After regular incubation, isolates from tilapia and pacu were uniformly resistant to amoxicillin, ampicillin, lincomycin, novobiocin, oxacillin, penicillin, and trimetoprim+sulfametoxazole. The A. hydrophila type strain presented resistance to the same antimicrobial substances and also against...
