pH-sensitive polyvinylpyrrolidone-acrylic acid hydrogels: Impact of material parameters on swelling and drug release BJPS
Sohail,Kashif; Khan,Ikram Ullah; Shahzad,Yasser; Hussain,Talib; Ranjha,Nazar Muhammad.
In this study, we fabricated pH-sensitive polyvinylpyrrolidone/acrylic acid (PVP/AA) hydrogels by a free-radical polymerisation method with variation in the content of monomer, polymer and cross-linking agent. Swelling was performed in USP phosphate buffer solutions of pH 1.2, 5.5, 6.5 and 7.5 with constant ionic strength. Network structure was evaluated by different parameters and FTIR confirmed the formation of cross-linked hydrogels. X-ray crystallography showed molecular dispersion of tramadol HCl. A drug release study was carried out in phosphate buffer solutions of pH 1.2, 5.5 and 7.5 for selected samples. It was observed that swelling and drug release from hydrogels can be modified by changing composition and degree of cross-linking of the hydrogels...

Characterization and evaluation of acid-modified starch of Dioscorea oppositifolia (Chinese yam) as a binder in chloroquine phosphate tablets BJPS
Okunlola,Adenike; Akingbala,Oluwatomi.
Chinese yam (Dioscorea oppositifolia) starch modified by acid hydrolysis was characterized and compared with native starch as a binder in chloroquine phosphate tablet formulations. The physicochemical and compressional properties (using density measurements and the Heckel and Kawakita equations) of modified Chinese yam starch were determined, and its quantitative effects as a binder on the mechanical and release properties of chloroquine phosphate were analyzed using a 2³ full factorial design. The nature (X1), concentration of starch (X2) and packing fraction (X3) were taken as independent variables and the crushing strength-friability ratio (CSFR), disintegration time (DT) and dissolution time (t80) as dependent variables. Acid-modified Chinese yam...

Transdermal iontophoretic delivery of timolol maleate BJPS
Patni,Mayur; Puranik,Prashant; Sonawane,Aravind; Panzade,Prabhakar.
Transdermal iontophoresis would be a promising method for the systemic delivery of water soluble and ionic drugs of relatively high molecular size, including peptides. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of biological variable such as guinea pig and human cadaver skin and other variables like drug concentration, current density on the transdermal iontophoretic transport of timolol maleate. The permeation profile of drug using solution and gel formulation was studied and compared. For better bioavailability, better patient compliance, and enhanced delivery, an iontophoretic drug delivery system of a timolol maleate matrix gel was formulated using Carbopol 974P. The study was conducted using silver-silver chloride electrodes...
