Grazing game: a learning tool for adaptive management in response to climate variability in semiarid areas of Ghana Ecology and Society
Villamor, Grace B; Department of Ecology and Natural Resources Management, Center for Development Research, University of Bonn; gracev@uni-bonn.de; Badmos, Biola K; Kwara State University, Malete, Nigeria; biolakz@yahoo.com.
In West Africa, the most extreme predicted effects of climate change are expected to occur in desert and grassland areas. It is crucial for local populations in this region to better understand what such projections signify to them to identify sound adaptation policies and interventions. We developed a game, called the “grazing game,” and conducted trials with local farmers at multiple study sites as a learning tool to better understand their behavior in response to climate variability under semiarid conditions in West Africa and to facilitate social learning. The grazing game was designed to reveal the processes that lead to overgrazing and desertification based on the players’ interactions with environmental conditions and...

Seed Provision and Dryland Crops in the Semiarid Regions of Eastern Kenya AgEcon
Nagarajan, Latha; Audi, Patrick; Jones, Richard; Smale, Melinda.
Over the last two decades, several seed-related programs have been initiated in eastern Kenya to improve farmers’ access to quality seeds of dryland cereals and legumes. They are provided during two occasions, regular and emergency times. But very often, the formal supply mechanisms limit their role in provision of seeds other than maize. In the absence of any formalized systems of seed provision for other dryland crops, such as sorghum and pigeon pea, farmers have preferred local markets for their seed needs, especially during distress periods. Here we have examined the role of various seed-intervention programs in eastern Kenya, along with the strengths and weaknesses of each program. We have also underscored the importance of local markets and their...

Potential of low-cost subsurface irrigation system in boosting food production in high water scarcity regions CIGR Journal
Babiker, Amir E.; Elnasikh, Maria, H.; Abd Elbasit, Mohamed A. M.; Abuali, Atif I.; Abu-Zerig, Majed M.; Liu, Gang.
Improvement of agricultural practices under limited water availability is a key solution for arid and semi-arid areas food shortage problems. Pressurized irrigation technologies have made great improvement in the field water use efficiencies; however, the construction cost of these systems was usually beyond the dryland small-farmer means. Low cost porous material was used for maize water supply under typical dry environment. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of subsurface irrigation systems made of locally produced clay pots and clay pipes on growth, yield and water use efficiency of maize (Zea mays L.) in the dryland of Sudan. Clay pots release point source water to the surrounding soil as emitters whereas clay pipes are...
