A systemic framework for context-based decision making in natural resource management: reflections on an integrative assessment of water and livelihood security outcomes following policy reform in South Africa Ecology and Society

We aimed to contribute to the field of natural resource management (NRM) by introducing an alternative systemic context-based framework for planning, research, and decision making, which we expressed practically in the development of a decision-making “tool” or method. This holistic framework was developed in the process of studying a specific catchment area, i.e., the Sand River Catchment, but we have proposed that it can be generalized to studying the complexities of other catchment areas. Using the lens of systemic resilience to think about dynamic and complex environments differently, we have reflected on the development of a systemic framework for understanding water and livelihood security under transformation in postapartheid...

Explaining dinophysis cf. acuminata abundance in Antifer (Normandy, France) using dynamic linear regression ArchiMer
Soudant, Dominique; Beliaeff, Benoit; Thomas, G.
Classical regression analysis can be used to model time series. However, the assumption that model parameters are constant over time is not necessarily adapted to the data. In phytoplankton ecology, the relevance of time-varying parameter values has been shown using a dynamic linear regression model (DLRM). DLRMs, belonging to the class of Bayesian dynamic models, assume the existence of a non-observable time series of model parameters, which are estimated on-line, i.e. after each observation. The aim of this paper was to show how DLRM results could be used to explain variation of a time series of phytoplankton abundance. We applied DLRM to daily concentrations of Dinophysis cf. acuminata, determined in Antifer harbour (French coast of the English...

Première approche de la dynamique d'une population de Temora Longicornis O.F. Müler (Copepoda, Calanoida) dans les bassins à flot du port de Dunkerque (France) ArchiMer
Brylinski, Jm.
The wet docks of Dunkirk are 3 to 4 degrees Celcius warmer than the seaboard waters of the North Sea. Such warmth is due to thermic industrial waste mainly from the E.D.F. power-station. A thermic and saline stratification can be observed that favours heterogeneousness among the populations of Temora lon- gicomis. The samples of copepods taken from the North Sea are significantly bigger than those found in the port of Dunkirk. Differences in size vary in the course of the year. The action of high temperatures upon reproduction is being debated j so is the existence of an autochtonous population in the docks in summer.

Symbiodinium clades A and D differentially predispose Acropora cytherea to disease and Vibrio spp. colonization ArchiMer
Rouze, Heloise; Lecellier, Gael; Saulnier, Denis; Berteaux-lecellier, Veronique.
Coral disease outbreaks have increased over the last three decades, but their causal agents remain mostly unclear (e.g., bacteria, viruses, fungi, protists). This study details a 14-month-long survey of coral colonies in which observations of the development of disease was observed in nearly half of the sampled colonies. A bimonthly qPCR method was used to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate Symbiodinium assemblages of tagged colonies, and to detect the presence of Vibrio spp. Firstly, our data showed that predisposition to disease development in general, and, more specifically, infection by Vibrio spp. in Acropora cytherea depended on which clades of Symbiodinium were harbored. In both cases, harboring clade D rather than A was beneficial to the...

Dynamique des populations bactériennes au cours de deux productions expérimentales de phytoplancton marin naturel ArchiMer
Bianchi, M.a.; Martin, Y.p..
Quantitative and qualitative variations of the heterotrophic bacterial population, during two experimental induced phytoplanktonic blooms are described. When the phytoplanktonic population deceases, the bacterial population exhibits a significant increase. The spring microflore is quite different from the fall ones. Microbiological, physiological and biochemical fluctuations indicate qualitative fluctuations. Bacterial strains are identified as "bacterial profiles".

Linking Spatial and Temporal Dynamic of Bacterioplankton Communities With Ecological Strategies Across a Coastal Frontal Area ArchiMer
Lemonnier, Clarisse; Perennou, Morgan; Eveillard, Damien; Fernandez-guerra, Antonio; Leynaert, Aude; Marié, Louis; Morrison, Hilary G.; Memery, Laurent; Paillard, Christine; Maignien, Lois.
Ocean frontal systems are widespread hydrological features defining the transition zone between distinct water masses. They are generally of high biological importance as they are often associated with locally enhanced primary production by phytoplankton. However, the composition of bacterial communities in the frontal zone remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigate how a coastal tidal front in Brittany (France) structures the free-living bacterioplankton communities in a spatio-temporal survey across four cruises, five stations and three depths. We used 16S rRNA gene surveys to compare bacterial community structures across 134 seawater samples and defined groups of co-varying taxa (modules) exhibiting coherent ecological patterns across...

THE IMPACT OF INFORMATION ON LAND DEVELOPMENT: A DYNAMIC AND STOCHASTIC ANALYSIS AgEcon
Batabyal, Amitrajeet A..
In a two-period model, economists such as K.J. Arrow, A.C. Fisher, and C. Henry, have shown that when development is both indivisible and irreversible, a developer who ignores the possibility of obtaining new information about the outcome of such development will invariably underestimate the benefits of preservation and hence favor development. In this note, I extend the AFH analysis in two directions. I model the land development problem in a dynamic framework, explicitly specifying an information production function. In such a setting, I then ask and answer the question concerning when development should take place. Forthcoming in Journal of Environmental Management

CONSISTENCY AND OPTIMALITY IN A DYNAMIC GAME OF POLLUTION CONTROL I: COMPETITION AgEcon
Batabyal, Amitrajeet A..
I model the interaction between a regulator and polluting firms as a Stackelberg differential game in which the regulator leads. The firms create pollution, which results in a stock externality. I analyze the intertemporal effects of alternate pollution control measures in a competitive industry. The principal issue here concerns the dynamic inconsistency of the optimal solution. Inter alia, I compare the steady state levels of pollution under optimal and under time consistent policies. Forthcoming in Environmental and Resource Economics

MODELLING THE EFFECT OF EU POLICY REFORMS ON FARM INVESTMENT BEHAVIOUR AgEcon
Gallerani, Vittorio; Gomez y Paloma, Sergio; Raggi, Meri; Viaggi, Davide.
The objective of this paper is to analyse farm strategies and investment behaviour in a sample of selected Italian farm-households facing different scenarios, with a particular focus on the effects of the 2003 CAP reform. Models were built for individual households using multi-criteria dynamic programming, including investment choice. A total of 24 farms were selected for modelling, all located in Emilia Romagna (Italy). The simulations show a strong effect of both policy and markets scenarios on household investment, though the latter seems more relevant than the former. However, decoupling itself shows minor effects in the majority of cases. The models offer useful insights about the mechanisms of adaptation and their implications for the effects of...

U.S. FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT IN FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRIES OF LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES: A DYNAMIC APPROACH AgEcon
Skripnitchenko, Anatoliy; Koo, Won W..
In this report, we apply a dynamic cost minimization model of U.S. foreign direct investment in food processing industries to nine Latin American countries. Estimation of the first order condition (Euler equation) using a consistent rational expectation assumption showed that dynamic structure explains the investment process in food processing industries quite well. U.S. food processors in Latin America are driven by the host country?s level of demand and by labor cost considerations. They can adjust their investment position quickly. We also quantified short and long-run effects of shocks to exogenous variables on foreign direct investment position.

AN ASSESSMENT OF DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR IN THE U.S. CATFISH MARKET: AN APPLICATION OF THE GENERALIZED DYNAMIC ROTTERDAM MODEL AgEcon
Muhammad, Andrew; Jones, Keithly G..
Dynamic demand systems have been employed in a number of studies to account for habit formation and inventory adjustments in demand. Few studies have attempted to provide a theoretical foundation for the dynamic demand structures employed. Recently, Bushehri (2003) showed how a generalized dynamic Rotterdam model could be derived from the neoclassical intertemporal utility maximization problem; however, no empirical application is provided in his study. This paper provides an empirical application of the generalized dynamic Rotterdam model to the demand for processed catfish products in the U.S. The two-period dynamic Rotterdam model explained a significant amount of the variation in U.S. catfish demand and was preferred to the one-period and static...

The olive oil and cotton lint sectors in the European Union AgEcon
Clapan, Carmen; Periklis, Drakos; Gadanakis, Yiorgos; Baourakis, George.
This paper examines and analyzes the impacts of the reformed CAP as well as the decisions of the new round of negotiations for the olive oil and cotton sectors in the European Union. The aim of this study is to estimate the changes in supply (agricultural supply plus intermediate demand and final production), demand (consumption), price and stock formation (import, export, beginning and ending stocks, national price formation) for both the olive oil and cotton sectors. The model designed for this purpose is partial equilibrium and policy oriented. The objectives of this model are to estimate changes in the production and consumption of the two products concerned, to determine how the reformed Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the new round of...

Strategic Interaction With Multiple Tools: A New Empirical Model AgEcon
Richards, Timothy J.; Patterson, Paul M..
The Lanchester model of strategic interaction typically considers only two-firm rivalry and one strategic tool. This paper presents an alternative that considers rivalry among several firms using multiple tools. Marketing decisions are dynamically optimal and use equations of motion for market share that are consistent with optimal consumer choice. Using a single-market case study that consists of five years of monthly data on ready to eat cereal sales, advertising, product development investments and new product introductions, we test our model against a similar Lanchester specification. Non-nested specification tests fail to reject the proposed model, but reject the Lanchester alternative.

Crop-Based Biofuel Production under Acreage Constraints and Uncertainty AgEcon
Baker, Mindy L.; Hayes, Dermot J.; Babcock, Bruce A..
A myriad of policy issues and questions revolve around understanding the bioeconomy. To gain insight, we develop a stochastic and dynamic general equilibrium model and capture the uncertain nature of key variables such as crude oil prices and commodity yields. We also incorporate acreage limitations on key feedstocks such as corn, soybeans, and switchgrass. We make standard assumptions that investors are rational and engage in biofuel production only if returns exceed what they can expect to earn from alternative investments. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 mandates the use of 36 billion gallons of biofuels by 2022, with significant requirements for cellulosic biofuel and biodiesel production. We calculate the level of tax credits required...

Optimal management of a flammable forest providing timber and carbon sequestration benefits: an Australian case study AgEcon
Spring, Daniel; Kennedy, John O.S.; Mac Nally, Ralph.
In deciding to keep or fell a forest stand given its age, the risk of loss of timber through wildfire is an important consideration. If trees also have value from sequestration of carbon, another effect of fire is the unplanned loss of stored carbon. Factors affecting the decision to keep or fell trees, and how much to spend on fire protection, are investigated using stochastic dynamic programming, using carbon sequestration in stands of mountain ash in Victoria as a case study. The effect of treating sawlogs as a permanent carbon sink after harvesting is explored.

Analyzing the Economic Impact of Climate Change on Global Timber Markets AgEcon
Sohngen, Brent; Sedjo, Roger A.; Mendelsohn, Robert; Lyon, Kenneth S..
In this paper, we show how ecological and economic models can be linked to determine the economic impact of climate change on global timber markets. We begin by discussing some of the important issues relevant to global impact analyses such as this. We then outline our general modeling framework and discuss the particular models that will be used. Finally, we discuss some of the important issues involved with linking the two types of models.

Rapid changes in tree composition and biodiversity: consequences of dams on dry seasonal forests RChHN
Vale,Vagner S; Schiavini,I; Prado-júnior,J A; Oliveira,Ana P; Gusson,André E.
BACKGROUND: Plants in a seasonal environment that become close to the artificial lake after dams construction may have enhanced growth or die due to the new conditions. Changes in mortality or growth rates lead to changes in community diversity, and we do not know if the community functions will change; our main hypothesis was that a few years after impoundment, species richness and diversity will increase because the increased supply of water would favor the establishment of water-associated species. Therefore, we evaluated the consequences of proximity of three dry seasonal forests to the water table after damming, with a dynamic evaluation of the species studied to understand changes in diversity in these areas. We sampled 60 plots of 20x10 m in each...

Dynamic of decapod crustacean larvae on the entrance of Guanabara bay BABT
Fernandes,Lohengrin Dias de Almeida; Bonecker,Sérgio Luiz Costa; Valentin,Jean Louis.
In the present study, we observed seasonal variations in the density of decapod larvae as well as changes in density related to diurnal and tidal cycles. Among the decapod larvae collected, portunids and grapsids were the most abundant, especially during nocturnal ebb tides and near the surface. The same results were obtained in late winter (September) and late summer (March). These results demonstrated a flow of decapod larvae from Guanabara Bay to adjacent coastal waters. Luciferid (Lucifer faxoni) was the only group with high densities during flood tides and we suggest this is an evidence of L. faxoni larvae entering Guanabara Bay in late winter. Probably these changes in distribution of Lucifer faxoni among winter and summer were related to...
