Empirical analysis of agricultural trade between EU and China: Explanation behind China's growing agrifood imports AgEcon
Huan-Niemi, Ellen; Niemi, Jyrki S..
This study attempts to identify and measure quantitatively the effects of changing economic environment and trade policies on China’s agricultural imports from the EU as well as globally. The approach is to model behavioural relationships in the agricultural trade between China and the EU by using annual trade data from 1986 to 2005. The results indicate that Chinese agricultural imports are relatively inelastic to absolute price changes, but relative price changes significantly affect the market shares of EU exports due to price competition. Trade liberalisation in the form of tariff reductions is trivial in changing the quantity of China’s agricultural imports from the EU. China’s growing agrifood imports has been fuelled by rapid income growth of its...

Factors Influencing Trust-Supporting Mechanisms in European Agri-Food Chains AgEcon
Fischer, Christian; Gonzalez, Maria A.; Henchion, Maeve M.; Leat, Philip M.K..
The role of trust in eight selected agri-food chains in four EU countries is explored. The empirical analysis is based on a qualitative assessment of 28 expert interviews conducted in summer/autumn 2005. The findings suggest that trust is more pronounced among SMEs which are characterised by the existence of personal relationships between business partners. However, as is clear for pork breeders, if a source of distrust exists, trust may not fully develop. Also, if the general economic situation is difficult, the development of trust may be hampered, because all chain participants are struggling to command a share of a diminishing margin within the chain. Finally, if economic power is distributed unevenly, as is the case in Germany, Ireland, Spain and...

Violence, Political Instability, and International Trade: Evidence from Kenya’s Cut Flower Sector AgEcon
Muhammad, Andrew; D'Souza, Anna; Amponsah, William A..
Abstract: We assess whether and how violence and political instability affect trade between developed and developing countries considering the special case of EU imports of Kenyan roses after the 2007/08 post-election violence and political instability in Kenya. Using the Rotterdam model to estimate EU demand for roses from Kenya and other global competitors, we find evidence of a structural change in the import growth rate for Kenya, approximately equivalent to an 18.6% tariff. These results highlight the importance of non-tariff barriers to trade and contribute to the growing literature on the role of insecurity and instability in hindering international trade.

Measuring competitiveness in the EU market: a comparison between food industry and agriculture AgEcon
Carraresi, Laura; Banterle, Alessandro.
Facing the growing competition in the European food market, the purpose of this paper is to assess European country competitiveness at the sector level in the intra-EU market over the last fifteen years, comparing the evolution of the food industry, where firms have had to reshape strategies to maintain market position, and agricultural sector, where changes in Common agricultural policy have forced farms to face market trends. The analysis of competitiveness was carried out by assessing trade indices (EMS, RCA, RXA, RMA, NEI). Cluster analysis was also run to classify groups of countries with similar features in terms of competitive performance over the 1991-2006 period. The country that profited most from market integration in both sectors, reaching a...

DETERMINE THE KEY FACTORS OF THE AGRARIAN ECONOMIC GROWTH IN THE 21TH CENTURY IN HUNGARY AgEcon
Czarl, Adrienn.
Economic growth is the top economic and political priority of world leaders. Countries with significant rate of development are higher ranked and serve as models for the developing countries and for the economies in transition. As an EU member, Hungary needs to close up the gap also in case of the agriculture. After analysing the period 1994-2004 the major factor among supports influencing growth is investment subsidies ahead of current flow supports such as Supports to reduce the cost of agricultural production. Irrespective of the alternating periods, the gradients established in the statistical analyses and the results from the study of elasticity along the period justify one of the basic tenets of modern economics: in order to achieve the bigger...

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE HUNGARIAN AGRICULTURAL TRADE AFTER THE EU ACCESSION AgEcon
Konig, Gabor.
The paper discusses the changes of the Hungarian agricultural trade, and shows how different factors (both internal and external) determine the flow of agricultural trade. The analyses show that although the EU plays a role more and more important in the Hungarian trade, the balance became worse, partly because of the increase of import from Germany and from Poland. The worsening trend of the trade after the accession shows that although the competitiveness is increasing it is still behind the improvement of competitiveness of the members of the EU-15 and 10 (partly because of the change of trade agreements, of subsidies and tariffs). In advantageous years (for cereals) the trends of trade with Romania and Bulgaria may have a positive effect on the flow of...

Dirty Tariffication Revisited: The EU and Sugar AgEcon
Swinbank, Alan.
It is widely believed that a number of countries, including the EU, engaged in dirty tariffication during the Uruguay Round of trade talks. This article examines the EU’s record on sugar and finds little evidence to substantiate the claim. However, world prices increased between the base period (1986-88) and the date of implementation (1995), and so tariffication resulted in an increase in the tax that would have been charged on sugar imports into the EU. As well, the Special Safeguard provisions meant that a substantial additional levy could be charged.

Trust in the US‐EU Fruit and Vegetable Chain: Do US Exporters Understand EU Importers? AgEcon
Ameseder, Christoph; House, Lisa; Haas, Rainer; Meixner, Oliver; Fritz, Melanie; Dahl, Ellie; Hofstede, Gert Jan.
Research on organizational and inter‐organizational trust has become an important field in management and marketing literature, as it is perceived as a pivotal aspect of business transactions. However, clarifications are still needed on the issue of whom we trust; is the person whom we are trading with trusted, or the organization, or just the product‐quality? Not only has this question not been answered within this field of research, neither have cultural differences have been described to any great extent. Additionally, if the perceived factors important to establish trusting relationships may or may not be the same on the buyers and the sellers side in international business transaction in food chains. The primary objective of this research study...

Ten Years After - Welfare Effects of the Application of the CAP in Austria, Finland and Sweden AgEcon
Niemi, Jyrki S.; Fahlbeck, Erik; Hofreither, Markus F..
Ten years ago, Austria, Finland, and Sweden joined the EU. The application of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) caused major repercussions on the agricultural sectors of the entering countries. This article analyses the welfare effects of accession to the EU on the agricultural markets in Austria, Finland and Sweden in a simple supply and demand framework, which is kept strictly identical across all three countries. The quantitative results of the study are derived by using standard partial equilibrium comparative static analysis in the Marshallian economic surplus framework. Using this method, the welfare effects are calculated for eight major cereal and livestock commodities produced in Austria, Finland, and Sweden by comparing the evolution of the...

Az Európai Unió agrárérdekei AgEcon
Udovecz, Gabor.
- The EU member states have nothing in common except that they all belong to the community. The reconciliation of diverse conditions, stages of development, traditions, values and interests takes place via compromise. Recently, however, new changes have appeared within the EU, which could fundamentally alter the agricultural sector and its interests and solutions....

Households’ WTP for the Reliability of Gas Supply AgEcon
Chou, Wan-Jung; Bigano, Andrea; Hunt, Alistair; La Branche, Stephane; Markandya, Anil; Pierfederici, Roberta.
The security of natural gas supply is an important issue for all EU countries due to the region’s heavy dependence on imported supply sources and in light of energy demand for gas that is continuously increasing. Discussions have emphasised strategies for securing the supply at the macro level, e.g. diversification in supply sources, increase in storage capacity, etc. By contrast, consumers’ demand for the reliability of gas supply is rarely investigated. Hence this study was conducted to examine the economic implications associated with the security of gas supply directly to domestic consumers. Based on the choice experiment approach, household surveys were conducted in France, Italy and the UK. The results confirmed that the degree of the economic impact...

A Free Trade between Ukraine and the European Union: Challenges and Opportunities for Agricultural Markets AgEcon
Nekhay, Olexandr; Gay, Stephan Hubertus; Fellmann, Thomas.
The negotiations on a deep and comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) between Ukraine and the EU are currently in process. Such a FTA can be expected to imply opportunities as well as challenges for agricultural markets. This paper provides a model-based quantitative assessment of the potential impacts of a FTA on agricultural commodity markets in the EU and Ukraine. For the quantitative analysis the dynamic, partial equilibrium model AGLINK-COSIMO has been adapted and applied. The modules for the EU and Ukraine have been extracted from the global model and prepared to run together. Thus, the focus is on the bilateral trade positions and not on the effect on other countries. The simulation of a FTA between the EU and Ukraine was done through the...

Assessing the Impact of ACP/EU Economic Partnership Agreement on West African Countries AgEcon
Busse, Matthias; Grossmann, Harald.
The European Union is currently negotiating free trade agreements, called Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs), with African countries as part of the Cotonou Agreement between the European Union and African, Caribbean and Pacific countries. The paper empirically assesses the impact of the EPAs on trade flows and government revenue for 14 West African countries. The results indicate that the decline in import duties due to the preferential tariff elimination might be of some cause for concern and that complementary fiscal and economic policies have to be implemented before or at the time the EPAs come into force.

Are Food Price Differences in EU Member States a Result of the Penn Effect? AgEcon
Fousekis, Panos.
Panel data from 14 EU member states and non parametric techniques are used in this paper to investigate the relationship between food prices and real per capita incomes. The empirical results suggest that the Penn Effect largely holds for Total Food prices but not for the prices of certain among the seven disaggregate food commodities considered. In particular, for Cereals, for Fats and Oils, and for Other food products poorer countries are likely to face prices no lower than those prevailing in richer ones

IMPACT OF PHASING OUT MILK QUOTAS ON STRUCTURE AND PRODUCTION OF FINNISH DAIRY SECTOR AgEcon
Lehtonen, Heikki.
We evaluate impacts of milk quota abolition in Finland where production costs and producer price of milk are among the highest in the EU. We analyse several price scenarios for dairy products corresponding to 10-30% reductions in raw milk prices in the EU following milk quota expansion of 2% per year. The sector model includes 18 dairy products and regions and other agricultural activities. Armington -assumption is used in modelling foreign trade. Trade of milk quotas and structural change are endogenous in the model. The results suggest that 10-15% reductions in the EU milk prices would result in less than 10% decrease in Finnish dairy production. Investments to large farm units would still increase. However, if the EU milk prices decreased by 15-20%...

Structural Change and Public Policies in EU Agriculture: An Overview AgEcon
Blandford, David; Hill, Berkeley.
Substantial structural change is taking place in EU agriculture. Average farm size is increasing and labour is continuing to move out of the sector. Slow growth in food demand and the effects of technological change on supply are likely to exert downward pressure on real agricultural prices. Within this context, policies at the EU and national levels will have mixed effects on economic adaptation and structural change. There is considerable uncertainty about the long-run viability of the so-called European model of agriculture, particularly given the intensification of pressures for change through economic globalisation.

Decoupling EU Farm Support: Does the New Single Payment Scheme Fit within the Green Box? AgEcon
Swinbank, Alan; Tranter, Richard B..
Recent reform of the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has led to a further decoupling of farm support. The EU believes that the new Single Payment Scheme, which replaces the former system of area and headage payments to farmers, tied to production, will qualify for green-box status in the WTO. We examine this contention, particularly in light of the recent WTO panel report on upland cotton.
